A sensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of plasmonic crystals fabricated via a colloidal-crystal-assisted templating
method is studied. Plasmonic crystals are prepared by depositing a thin gold (Au) layer onto a two-dimensional array of polystyrene
spheres self-assembled on a quartz substrate. The enhanced transmission as a result of the SPR of Au plasmonic crystals, which
are immersed in different ambient liquids, are measured and compared with that of polystyrene (PS) microsphere templates of
different sizes, both before and after removal of Au nanoprisms formed on the quartz substrate through pores among the spheres.
It is found that the measured sensitivities exhibit a linear dependence on the refractive index of the surrounding medium
and are linked to coupling effects between SPRs on the corrugated Au film and nanoislands. The feasibility of the SPR system
in molecular monolayer detection is further demonstrated through a formation of alkanethiolate self-assembled monolayers on
the Au film surface, which causes a 4 nm red-shift of the main SPR.

An improved transmission line model to study the thermal effects in semiconductor laser diodes is reported in this paper.
The temperature effects in the laser characteristics are obtained by incorporating temperature dependent gain and carrier
density equations for the laser cavity. These primary factors are introduced in the regular transmission line laser model
to estimate the static and dynamic characteristics of an 1.3μm InGaAsP double heterostructure laser diode. The results show
good agreement with the experimental observation and solution of rate equations referred in the literature. The key feature
of this model is that it provides the laser spectra at various temperatures. Based on the model, time dependent evolution
of optical spectrum, temperature dependent optical output and frequency chirp are evaluated. Further the distribution of photon

We report the spectroscopic properties of femtosecond laser-irradiated sodium-alumino-borate glass doped with silver and gold
ions. We precipitated gold and silver nanoparticles by laser irradiation and annealing at 400°C for 30 min. The irradiation
and annealing treatment produced different absorption and emission characteristics in Au3+ doped and Au3+, Ag+ codoped glasses, and the possible mechanisms of the observed results are discussed. The size of the nanoparticles was estimated

We establish the existence of two weak coupling regime effective dynamics for an open quantum system of repeated interactions
(vanishing strength and individual interaction duration, respectively). This generalizes known results (Attal and Joye in
J. Stat. Phys. 126:1241–1283, 2007) in that the von Neumann algebras describing the system and the chain element may not be of finite type. Then (but now assuming
that the small system is of finite type), we prove that both effective dynamics capture the long-term behavior of the system:
existence of a unique asymptotic state for them implies the same property for the respective exact dynamics—provided that
the perturbation parameter is sufficiently small. The zero-th order term in a power series expansion in the perturbation parameter
of such an asymptotic state is given by the asymptotic state of the effective dynamics. We conclude by working out the case
in which the small system and the chain element are spins.

We report the results of the DC magnetization, neutron powder diffraction and neutron depolarization studies on the spin-chain
compounds Ca3Co2–x
Fe
x
O6 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4). Rietveld refinement of neutron powder diffraction patterns at room temperature confirms the single-phase
formation for all the compounds in rhombohedral structure with space group Rc. Rietveld refinement also confirms that Fe was doped at the trigonal prism site, 6a (0, 0, 1/4) of Co. The high temperature
magnetic susceptibility obeys the Curie-Weiss law; the value of the paramagnetic Curie temperature (θ
p) decreases as the concentration of iron increases and it becomes negative for x = 0.4. No extra Bragg peak as well as no observable enhancement in the intensity of the fundamental (nuclear) Bragg peaks
has been observed in the neutron diffraction patterns down to 30 K. No depolarization of neutron beam has been observed down
to 3 K confirming the absence of ferro- or ferrimagnetic-like correlation.

Background
Previous reports of inhibition in the neocortex suggest that inhibition is mediated predominantly through GABAA receptors exhibiting fast kinetics. Within the hippocampus, it has been shown that GABAA responses can take the form of either fast or slow response kinetics. Our findings indicate, for the first time, that the neocortex displays synaptic responses with slow GABAA receptor mediated inhibitory postsynaptic currents (IPSCs). These IPSCs are kinetically and pharmacologically similar to responses found in the hippocampus, although the anatomical specificity of evoked responses is unique from hippocampus. A prompt gamma neutron activation analysis borehole logging method for copper, nickel and iron grade estimation is proposed. The performance of the method was simulated by MCNP5 code. Based on the theory of neutron–gamma distribution on the borehole condition, the BGO scintillator and 3He neutron tube are adopted to record gamma ray spectrum and thermal neutron simultaneously, and least square method is used for the characteristic gamma ray counts calculation in the high energy range.
