An outer-sphere ligand for uranyl carbonate

A novel supramolecular host for the uranyl carbonate complex has been designed and synthesized. The modified cyclodextrin host binds uranyl carbonate in water with a stability of 253 M(-1).

3,6-dioxypyridazine bridged tungsten-tungsten quadruple bonds. Comparisons of electron delocalisation with oxalate bridged compounds

The preparation and characterisation of the tungsten-tungsten quadruply bonded, 3,6-dioxypyridazine bridged complex [((t)BuCO(2))(3)W(2)](2)([micro sign]-H(2)C(4)N(2)O(2)) and its single electron oxidised radical cation are reported and, when compared with related bridged dimolybdenum complexes, reveal a different mechanism of electronic coupling from that seen in related oxalate bridged systems.     

Synthetic applicability and in situ recycling of a B-methoxy oxazaborolidine catalyst derived from cis-1-amino-indan-2-ol

A procedure is described that greatly simplifies the use of an oxazaborolidine catalyst derived from (1R,2S) cis-1-amino-indan-2-ol. This B-OMe catalyst has been employed in the asymmetric reduction of a number of structurally diverse prochiral ketones, in particular the reduction of alpha-amino acetophenone and its derivatives. A method for reducing the effective catalyst loading by "in situ recycling" is also presented. [structure: see text]     

The Distribution of the Summatory Function of the Mobius Function

The summatory function of the Möbius function is denotedM(x). In this article we deduce conditional results concerningM(x) assuming the Riemann hypothesis and a conjecture of Gonekand Hejhal on the negative moments of the Riemann zeta function.Assuming these conjectures, we show that M(x), when appropriatelynormalized, possesses a limiting distribution, and also thata strong form of the weak Mertens conjecture is true. Finally,we speculate on the lower order of M(x) by studying the constructeddistribution function. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification11M26, 11N56.     

Synthesis of a cyclic peptide containing norlanthionine: effect of the thioether bridge on peptide conformation

Two diastereomeric analogues of ring C of nisin incorporating a novel norlanthionine residue have been synthesized via a triply orthogonal protecting group strategy. A full structural study was carried out by NMR, which elucidated the conformational properties of the two peptides and enabled the identity of each diastereoisomer to be proposed.     

Poincaré Semigroup Symmetry as an Emergent Property of Unstable Systems

The notion that elementary systems correspond to irreducible representations of the Poincaré group is the starting point for this paper, which then goes on to discuss how a semigroup for the time evolution of unstable states and resonances could emerge from the underlying Poincaré symmetry. Important tools in this analysis are the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients for the Poincaré group.     

On the probability of a rational outcome for generalized social welfare functions on three alternatives

In Kalai (2002) [10], Kalai investigated the probability of a rational outcome for a generalized social welfare function (GSWF) on three alternatives, when the individual preferences are uniform and independent. In this paper we generalize Kalai's results to a broader class of distributions of the individual preferences, and obtain new lower bounds on the probability of a rational outcome in several classes of GSWFs. In particular, we show that if the GSWF is monotone and balanced and the distribution of the preferences is uniform, then the probability of a rational outcome is at least 3/4, proving a conjecture raised by Kalai. The tools used in the paper are analytic: the Fourier-Walsh expansion of Boolean functions on the discrete cube, properties of the Bonamie-Beckner noise operator, and the FKG inequality.
