Magnetic moments and GT-type β-decay matrix elements in the fermi gas model

Magnetic moments and GT-type β-decay matrix elements are calculated in the infinitely extended Fermi gas. Relations between various competing mechanisms such as core polarization and exchange-current effects are examined. Some attention is paid to the role of the controversial Δ-hole effect. The results are discussed in comparison with finite nuclei.     

Substituent effect of the coordinated pyridine in a series of pyrazolato bridged dinuclear diiron(II) complexes on the spin-crossover behavior

Two series of pyrazolato bridged dinuclear NCS and NCBH3 diiron(II) complexes with various types of 3- or 4-substituted pyridines, [{Fe(NCS or NCBH3)(X-py)}2(mu-bpypz)2], were prepared and their variable-temperature magnetic susceptibilities were measured. There were found linear correlations of the spin-crossover temperatures Tc not only between the NCS and NCBH3 complexes with the corresponding substituted pyridines, but also between the Tc and the Hammett constants, supporting the electronic substituent effect of the coordinated pyridine rather than a steric effect. The ligand field and the interelectronic repulsion parameters together with the thermodynamic data and/or cooperativity factor were discussed in relation with their spin-crossover behavior.     

Spontaneous racemization and epimerization behavior in solution of chiral nitroxides

[reaction: see text] Enantiomerically enriched samples of chiral cyclic nitroxides with a 4-hydroxyphenyl group on the stereogenic center bearing the NO radical group undergo unprecedented spontaneous racemization and/or epimerization in aprotic solvents, which can be well accounted for by the multistep equilibrations involving planar quinoid intermediates.     

Observation of the transient rotator phase of n-hexadecane in emulsified droplets with time-resolved two-dimensional small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering

Crystallization of n-hexadecane in emulsion droplets was studied using time-resolved two-dimensional small- and wide-angle x-ray scattering with differential scanning calorimetry (2D-SAXS-WAXS-in situ DSC) which provides information about both nano- and subnanoscale structural change. n-hexadecane in droplets reproducibly crystallized into the stable triclinic phase via a transient-rotator phase. This is in contrast with previous results that the rotator phase of n-hexadecane was observed only occasionally for bulk samples. Thus we confirmed the existence of rotator phase in n-hexadecane, which is important for the study of crystallization of soft materials. We suggest that the rotator phase at the interface of oil and water plays a precursor role for bulk crystallization. This study demonstrates that 2D-SAXS-WAXS-in situ DSC is a powerful tool for the study of a transient phase.     

X-ray directional dichroism of a polar ferrimagnet

In a polar ferrimagnet GaFeO3, we have found a novel magneto-optical effect, termed x-ray nonreciprocal directional dichroism (XNDD), that the x-ray absorption at around the K edge of an Fe ion depends on whether the x-ray propagation vector is parallel or antiparallel to the outer product of the magnetization and electric-polarization vectors. The XNDD spectroscopy as demonstrated here can be a useful tool to probe the local magnetism in noncentrosymmetric systems such as magnetic interfaces and nanostructures.     

Magnetization-induced second harmonic generation in a polar ferromagnet

Second harmonic generation (SHG) induced by spontaneous magnetization has been investigated for a polar ferromagnetic crystal of GaFeO3. The Kerr rotation of the second harmonic light becomes gigantic with decreasing temperature below the magnetic transition temperature (approximately =205 K), e.g., as large as 73 degrees at 100 K. The magnetic domains can be visualized by using that large nonlinear Kerr rotation. The spectrum of the magnetization-induced SHG as measured indicates the two-photon resonant electronic process on a Fe3+ ion in the crystal.     

Generalization of the N(p)N(n)N(p)N(n) scheme and the structure of the valence space

The N(p)N(n) scheme, which has been extensively applied to even-even nuclei, is found to be a very good benchmark for odd-even, even-odd, and doubly-odd nuclei as well. There are no apparent shifts in the correlations for these four classes of nuclei. The compact correlations highlight the deviant behavior of the Z = 78 nuclei and are used to deduce effective valence proton numbers near Z = 64 as well as to study the evolution of the Z = 64 subshell gap.     

Strength characteristics of the self-sustained wave in grooved channels with different groove length

The self-sustained oscillations arising in a series of grooved channels are investigated experimentally. Pressure drop, time-averaged and time-various local pressure in the grooved channels with six kinds of groove length are measured with the differential transducer and the pressure sensor, respectively, and the flow structures are visualized using the aluminum dust method. The local pressure signal shows that the self-sustained wave appears in the first or second frequency, and the Strouhal number, based on the nature frequency of the self-sustained wave, is almost equivalent for the first or second frequency in the same channel. Meanwhile, the Strouhal number for each channel decreases monotonously with the groove length. Furthermore, it is found that increasing pressure will result in higher amplitude of the self-sustained wave, this behavior is significant for the efficient heat transfer in practical engineering.
