Phase transitions and metastable states in TlGaSe2

The results of measurements of the dielectric constant of TlGaSe₂ in temperature range of successive phase transitions are presented. An anomaly in the temperature dependence of the real part of dielectric constant in TlGaSe₂ has been observed at about 242?K in addition to anomalies at 115, 108, and also near 65?K as reported in previous publications. The presence of temperature hysteresis effects in temperature interval between 115 and 242?K allowed making a conclusion about possible existence of an incommensurate phase in the mentioned temperature range. A model of succession of the structural phase transitions in TlGaSe₂ has been suggested.

Synthesis and characterization of Li1.05Co1/3Ni1/3Mn1/3O1.95X0.05 (X = Cl,Br) cathode materials for lithium-ion battery

In order to improve the thermal stability and dynamic performance of LiCo_1/3Ni_1/3Mn_1/3O₂ materials, Cl-doped and Br-doped materials were synthesized via the co-precipitation method. The morphology, structure, electrochemical performance and thermal stability were characterized by environment scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), charge–discharge cycling and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Results show that all materials had a stable layered structure with α-NaFeO₂ and that Cl-doping slightly increased the size of grains. Both Cl-doping and Br-doping improved the high rate of discharge capacity, cycle-life performance and thermal stability, but Cl-doping was better than Br-doping in improving the material structure stability, dynamic performance and thermal stability.     

Recent Progress on Manganese-Based Nanostructures as Responsive MRI Contrast Agents

Manganese-based nanostructured contrast agents (CAs) entered the field of medical diagnosis through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) some years ago. Although some of these Mn-based CAs behave as classic T₁ contrast enhancers in the same way as clinical Gd-based molecules do, a new type of Mn nanomaterials have been developed to improve MRI sensitivity and potentially gather new functional information from tissues by using traditional T₁ contrast enhanced MRI. These nanomaterials have been designed to respond to biological environments, mainly to pH and redox potential variations. In many cases, the differences in signal generation in these responsive Mn-based nanostructures come from intrinsic changes in the magnetic properties of Mn cations depending on their oxidation state. In other cases, no changes in the nature of Mn take place, but rather the nanomaterial as a whole responds to the change in the environment through different mechanisms, including changes in integrity and hydration state. This review focusses on the chemistry and MR performance of these responsive Mn-based nanomaterials.

Stability Analysis and Attractivity Results of a DC-DC Buck Converter

Using tools from set-valued and variational analysis, we propose a mathematical formulation for a power DC-DC Buck converter. We prove the existence of trajectories for the model. A stability and asymptotic stability results are established. The theoretical results are supported by some numerical simulations with a discussion about explicit and implicit schemes.     

Coupling-observer-based nonlinear control for flexible air-breathing hypersonic vehicles

This paper investigates the nonlinear control problem for flexible air-breathing hypersonic vehicles (FAHVs). The coupling dynamics between flexible and rigid-body parts of FAHVs may cause degradation of control performance or high-frequency oscillations of control input and flexible state. In this paper, the flexible effects produced by the coupling are modeled as a kind of unknown disturbance and included in the new control-design model, for which a coupling observer is constructed to estimate these effects. Thus, a novel nonlinear composite control strategy, which combines a coupling-observer-based feedforward compensator and a dynamic-inversion-based feedback controller, is proposed to reject the flexible effects on pitch rate and track desired trajectories of velocity and flight-path angle. The stability of composite closed-loop system is analyzed by using the Lyapunov theory. Simulation results on a full nonlinear model of FAHVs demonstrate that the presented controller is more effective by comparison with the previous scheme.
