Collective flow model for the pion transverse momentum spectra from relativistic nuclear collisions at CERN

The transverse momentum spectra for pions observed by WA80 and NA35 collaborations are analysed within a fireball model with collective isentropic expansion and a realistic freeze-out criterion. By varing the initial state of the fireball, an excellent fit to the data is achieved for the whole measured range ofP _T . Slight differences in the data for the spectral slopes from central and pheripheral collisions originate in our model from the difference in the size of the fireball and in the number of participating nucleons in central and peripheral collisions. Using additional information from two-pion correlations, we can extrapolate our model back from the freeze-out point (determined from the spectra) to the initial state; we find that an initial energy density of 1.5–2GGeV/fm³ is sufficient to explain the data from central O+Au collisions at 200A GeV.     

Spectral features of laser induced plasma from YBa2Cu3O7 and GdBa2Cu3O7 highT c superconductors

Laser induced plasma emission spectra from highT _c superconducting samples of YBa₂Cu₃O₇ and GdBa₂Cu₃O₇ obtained with 1.06μm radiation from a Q switched Nd:YAG laser beam has been analysed. The results clearly show the presence of diatomic oxides in addition to ionized species of the constituent metals in the plasma thus produced.

Effect of rare-earth oxides on the magnetic properties of anisotropic barium ferrites

The effect of rare-earth oxides on the properties of anisotropic barium ferrites has been studied by x-ray structural and Mössbauer methods. Additions of SrCO₃, as well as SrCO₃ and La₂O₃, SrCO₃ and Pr₆O₁₁, SrCO₃ and Nd₂O₃, SrCO₃ and Sm₂O₃ in amounts of 7.5 mole % Sr and 10 mole % rare-earth element to grade-A barium powder results in the substitution of barium ions by Sr and rare-earth ions; consequently, the energy of magnetic anisotropy changes and the technically important parameters B_r and (BH)_max increase.Translated from Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedenii, Fizika, No. 1, pp. 34–39, January, 1989.     

Burning Voltage in Atmospheric and Vacuum Short Arcs of Vanishing Length

The stepwise increase of the burning voltage of short break arcs has been found not only in a gas but also in vacuum. It is suggested that the effect is associated with the occurrence of a positive anode fall which enhances ionisation phenomena near the anode. This view is supported by the simultaneous registration of arc current, burning voltage, light emission from the anode region, of spectral lines of ions, atoms and continuum from the near anode plasma. The phenomena occur beyond a critical gap distance which can be related to the characteristic geometry of the discharge.     

Linear absorbing boundary conditions for surface water wave propagation

Summary The meaning of linear absorbing boundary conditions for periodic water waves in elliptical approaches is discussed. It is found that the direction of propagation of the waves must be known for reliable boundary conditions and that the energy dissipation of waves running parallel to a boundary in general cannot be modelled in the framework of a linear theory. The effect of oxygen ordering through controlled exposure to oxygen on the superconductive properties of LaBa2Cu3Oy

In an effort to clarify the role of controlled oxygen exposure in the synthesis of LaBa₂Cu₃O_y samples which achieve zero resistivity above 90 K, we have prepared samples of La(_1+x)Ba(_2–x)Cu₃O_y with x approximately equal to 0 and with y varying between 6.22 and 7.00. Summary We have estimated and measured the daily thermal expansion of an oceanographic platform. This has been found negligible as far as the calibration of a satellite altimeter is concerned.     

Structural relaxation time for various liquids

The structural relaxation time for series of various liquids (alkanes, aliphatic alcohols, and diols) are calculated from published data on the shear viscosity and the heat of evaporation per unit volume. Liquids having a 3D H-bond network (diols) are characterized by relaxation times one to two orders of magnitudes longer than those typical of liquids without such a network (alkanes and aliphatic alcohols).
