Total synthesis of slow reacting substances (SRS). “Leukotriene C-2” (11-trans-leukotriene C) (3) and leukotriene D (4)

Syntheses are described for the “slow reacting substances” 11-$\text{trans}$-leukotriene C (3) (previously known as leukotriene C-2) and leukotriene D (4), the cys-gly analog of leukotriene C (2). The synthesized leukotrienes 3 and 4 were instrumental in the assignment of structure to these members of the family of naturally occuring slow reacting substances which includes also 2.     

Auger and secondary electrons excited by backscattered electrons; An approach to quantitative analysis

The contribution of backscattered electrons (BE) to Auger electrons (AE) and secondary electrons (SE) was studied by depositing Be onto a polycrystalline or deposited Cu substrate. The effects of backscattering on SE and maximum escape depth of SE were obtained by using the so called δ-η method. This method was also applied to the AE and the effects of BE on AE were experimentally evaluated. The AE yield versus primary energy curve which was corrected for BE was compared with other experiments and theories and considerably good agreement was obtained. From this analysis, the excitation efficiencies of AE by primary electrons and by BE could also be obtained. The absolute AE yield of Be (KVV) was estimated by “area” measurements. The changes of plasma losses, the elastic peaks, the energy distribution of BE, and the true SE were also observed as a function of deposited film thickness, and the results are discussed.     

Electric conductivity of TCNQ salts of ionene polymers containing triethylenediammonium or 4,4′-bipyridilium ring

The ionene polymers were prepared by the Menshutkin reaction of α,ω-dibromoalkane (n) with triethylenediamine (TDA) or 4,4′-bipyridil (BP). Resistivities (p) and activation energies of conduction (E_a) were measured for the polymeric 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethan (TCNQ) salts with these ionenes. The correlation between the chemical structure of the ionenes and the conductivity was discussed. In the TDA,n-TCNQ complex salts and the BP,n-TCNQ simple salts the salts of the ionenes containing even numbers of CH₂ groups showed higher conductivities than those of the ionenes containing odd numbers of CH₂ groups. The conductivities determined by the narrower interval between the N⁺ cations of the main chains were measured in the simple salts. In the complex salts the conductivities determined by the larger interval were measured. The conformational change of the matrix ionenes affected the arrangement of the TCNQ molecules. The values of p were 79.7 and 12.5 Ω cm, and the values of E_a were 0.122 and 0.063 eV for TDA,4-TCNQ complex salt and BP,5-TCNQ complex salt, respectively.     

Heats of pyridine intercalation with α- and γ-zirconium phosphates

Calorimetric measurements at 25°C were made to determine the thermodynamic quantities for the intercalation of pyridine with α- and γ-zirconium phosphates. These phosphates showed exothermic reactions with ΔH⁰ = ?59.3 and ?21.9 kJ mole^?1, respectively. The large difference between the depyridination temperatures for both intercalates is rediscussed with the aid of the ΔG⁰ data obtained.     

Formation of cyclic organosilicon compounds via organopolysilyl anions starting from methoxymethyldisilanes. A mechanistic study

In the presence of a catalytic amount of sodium methoxide, sym-dimethoxytetramethyldisilane was converted into α,ω-dimethoxypermethylpolysilanes, MeO(SiMe₂)_nOMe where n ? 3, at room temperature. On the other hand, similar treatment of the disilane in THF solution gave cyclic polysilanes, (Me₂Si)_n where n = 5–7. Decomposition of the disilane in the presence of diphenylacetylene afforded a trisilacyclopentene derivative under similar conditions. This compound was obtained also by the reaction between α,ω-dimethoxypermethylpolysilanes and diphenylacetylene in the presence of sodium methoxide. These cyclic products most likely were formed via permethyl polysilyl anion intermediates derived from α,ω-dimethoxypermethylpolysilanes. Also, the formation of α,ω-dimethoxypermethylpolysilanes could be elucidated in terms of the mechanism involving the base-assisted, concerted nucleophilic substitution or stepwise substitution by silyl anions, rather than the successive dimethylsilylene (Me₂Si:) insertion reaction.     

Low energy tail of the exciton luminescence band in 2H-PbI2 and its relation to Urbach rule

We have measured luminescence spectra of 2H-PbI₂ at different temperatures between 77 and 180 K. The lower energy tail of the luminescence band due to free exciton annihilation decreases exponentially with decreasing the photon energy over an order of magnitude, which corresponds to the Urbach tail in the absorption spectrum. This fact suggests that the exciton state corresponding to the exponential tail is in the thermal equilibrium and the steepness coefficient δ₀ = 1.67 in Urbach rule is obtained also from the luminescence spectra.     

X-ray absorption spectroscopic study on the electronic structure of Li(1)(-)(x)()CoPO(4) electrodes as 4.8 V positive electrodes for rechargeable lithium ion batteries

Changes in the electronic structure of olivine Li(1-x)CoPO(4), 4.8 V positive electrode material for lithium ion batteries, were investigated using the X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) technique. The threshold energy in the Co K-edge increased with electrochemical Li removal, indicating the oxidation of cobalt ions due to charge compensation. Moreover, P and O K-edge XAS showed a slight shift in threshold energy with Li removal. Although it is generally believed that the electrons of PO(4) polyanion do not contribute to the oxidation process, present experimental results indicate changes in the electronic structure around PO(4) units. Such results would be interpreted by the idea of the hybridization effect between the Co 3d and O 2p orbitals and of the polarization effect introduced by Li ions.     

Muon spin relaxation studies of magnetic-field-induced effects in high-Tc superconductors

Muon spin relaxation measurements in high transverse magnetic fields [FORMULA: SEE TEXT] revealed strong field-induced quasistatic magnetism in the underdoped and Eu-doped (La,Sr)2CuO4 and La1.875Ba0.125CuO4, existing well above Tc and TN. The susceptibility counterpart of Cu spin polarization, derived from the muon spin relaxation rate, exhibits a divergent behavior towards T approximately 25 K. No field-induced magnetism was detected in overdoped La1.81Sr0.19CuO4, optimally doped Bi2212, and Zn-doped YBa2Cu3O7.     

Measurement of Cu K-shell and Ag L-shell ionization cross sections by low-energy positron impact

Inner shell ionization cross sections by low-energy positron impact have been measured. Development of an x-ray detector with thin Si(Li) crystals has enabled the first measurements of the absolute cross sections for the positron impacts in the energy range below 30 keV. Threshold behavior of the measured cross sections for the Cu K shell and Ag L shell are compared with the theoretical results of Gryzinski and Kowalski [Phys. Lett. A 183, 196 (1993)]] and Khare and Wadehra [Can. J. Phys. 74, 376 (1996)]]. Good agreement has been found for the Cu K shell, while the experimental values for the Ag L shell were found to be smaller than the corresponding theoretical results.
