The complexation of plutonium(IV) with sulfate at variable temperatures has been investigated by solvent extraction method.
A NaBrO3 solution was used as holding oxidant to maintain the plutonium(IV) oxidation state throughout the experiments. The distribution
ratio of Pu(IV) between the organic and aqueous phases was found to decrease as the concentrations of sulfate were increased.
Stability constants of the 1:1 and 1:2 Pu(IV)-HSO4
− complexes, dominant in the aqueous phase, were calculated from the effect of [HSO4
−] on the distribution ratio. The enthalpy and entropy of complexation were calculated from the stability constants at different

Assembly theory (referred to in prior works as pathway assembly) has been developed to explore the extrinsic information required to distinguish a given object from a random ensemble. In prior work, we explored the key concepts relating to deconstructing an object into its irreducible parts and then evaluating the minimum number of steps required to rebuild it, allowing for the reuse of constructed sub-objects. We have also explored the application of this approach to molecules, as molecular assembly, and how molecular assembly can be inferred experimentally and used for life detection. In this article, we formalise the core assembly concepts mathematically in terms of assembly spaces and related concepts and determine bounds on the assembly index. We explore examples of constructing assembly spaces for mathematical and physical objects and propose that objects with a high assembly index can be uniquely identified as those that must have been produced using directed biological or technological processes rather than purely random processes, thereby defining a new scale of aliveness. We think this approach is needed to help identify the new physical and chemical laws needed to understand what life is, by quantifying what life does. 相似文献

A survey of data on the perception of binaurally presented sounds indicates that loudness summation across ears is less than perfect; a diotic sound is less than twice as loud as the same sound presented monaurally. The loudness model proposed by Moore et al. [J. Audio Eng. Soc. 45, 224-240 (1997)] determines the loudness of binaural stimuli by a simple summation of loudness across ears. It is described here how the model can be modified so as to give more accurate predictions of the loudness of binaurally presented sounds, including cases where the sounds at the two ears differ in level, frequency or both. The modification is based on the idea that there are inhibitory interactions between the internal representations of the signals at the two ears, such that a signal at the left ear inhibits (reduces) the loudness evoked by a signal at the right ear, and vice versa. The inhibition is assumed to spread across frequency channels. The modified model gives reasonably accurate predictions of a variety of data on the loudness of binaural stimuli, including data obtained using loudness scaling and loudness matching procedures. 相似文献

Abstract A series of condensation polymer intermediates, which included several new compositions, was prepared from 5-t-butyl-m-xylene (I) so that the effect of the bulky t-butyl group on polymer properties could be determined. Compound (I) was oxidized with nitric acid to obtain 5-t-butyl-isophthalic acid (II), which was converted successively to the diacid chloride, the diamide, the dinitrile, and finally to 5-t-butyl-m-xylene-α,α′-diamine (VI); the overall yield was 80%. The dimethyl ester of (II) was prepared and converted to 5-t-butyl-m-xylene-α,α′-diol (VIII), a new composition, in 79.5% overall yield; the diphenyl ester was also prepared. The sodium salt of (II) was catalytically reduced to obtain 5-t-butyl-1,3-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid (IIa) in 95% yield. (IIa) was converted successively to the diacid chloride, the diamide, the dinitrile, and finally to 5-t-butyl-1,3-cyclohexanebis(methylamine) (VIa), a new composition; the overall yield was 37%. (IIa) was also converted to the dimethyl ester and finally to 5-t-butyl-1,3-cyclohexanedimethanol (VIIIa), a new composition; the overall yield was 64%. Condensation polymers were prepared from the intermediates (II), (IIa), (VI), (VIa), (VIII), and (VIIIa). These polymers had higher glass transition temperatures (Tg) than corresponding polymers containing no t-butyl groups. This general effect of the t-butyl group to increase the Tg value of the polymer was noted in all polymers prepared, regardless of whether the intermediate carrying the t-butyl group was a diacid, a diol, or a diamine, or whether the polymer was a polyamide, a polyester, or a polyurethane. 相似文献

Abstract A series of azamacrocycles which have been N-functionalised with pendent pyridylmethyl-(pyCH2-), bipyridylmethyl-(bipyCH2-) and terpyridylmethyl- (terpyCH2-) arms have been synthesised and characterised, and some of their coordination chemistry with transition metal ions is reported. By attaching the pendent-arms at the 5- rather than the 6-position of the py, bipy and terpy, new ligands are generated which can be used to form polynuclear metal complexes in a controlled and systematic fashion. Fluorescent pH and transition metal ion sensors have been developed by reacting the azamacrocyclic N-pendent bipyCH2 arm(s) with cis-[Ru(bipy)2Cl2], to give macrocycles with up to four attached [Ru(bipy)3]2+ groups. That based on 1,4,7-triazacyclononane (9N3), with three attached [Ru(bipy)3]2+ groups, has a first photo excited state pKa of 7.1, and is a useful fluorescent sensor for physiological pH at below micromolar concentrations. The analogous derivative of cyclam (1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) carrying four [Ru(bipy)3]2+ groups has a first photo excited state pKa of 5.7, allowing kinetic and thermodynamic fluorescence studies of metal ion uptake by an azamacrocycle at neutral pH without complications from protonated species. A pre-organised hexadentate tris(2,2′-bipyridyl) chelating ligand, 1,4,7-tris(2′,2″-bipyridyl-5′-ylmethyl)-1,4,7-triazacyclononane (L) has been developed, and crystal structures of mononuclear complexes [M(LH)]3+ (M = Ru, Cu) are reported. In [M(LH)]3+ the azamacrocyclic N-atoms are non-coordinating to M, but have a very high affinity for a single proton trapped in the macrocyclic cavity. An analogous and potentially nonadentate ligand has been developed based on 9N3 with three N-pendent terpyCH2-arms. 相似文献

Compressibility measurements are performed on a quantum point contact (QPC). Screening due to mobile charges in the QPC is measured quantitatively, using a second point contact. These measurements are performed from pinch-off through the opening of the first few modes in the QPC. While the measured signal closely matches a Thomas-Fermi-Poisson prediction, deviations from the classical behavior are apparent near the openings of the different modes. Density functional calculations attribute the deviations to a combination of a diverging density of states at the opening of each one-dimensional mode and exchange interaction, which is strongest for the first mode. 相似文献

Telluride misfit layer compounds are reported for the first time. These compounds were synthesized using a novel approach of structurally designing a precursor that would form the desired product upon low‐temperature annealing, which allows the synthesis of kinetically stable products that do not appear on the equilibrium phase diagram. Reductions in leaf growth are a commonly observed response to ultraviolet radiation, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly defined. This study examined the response of leaves exposed to a UV environment across a range of organizational scales, including leaf expansion rate, epidermal cell size and number, biomechanical properties, leaf–water relations and activity of cell-wall peroxidases. Two experimental approaches were used; Lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L.) plants were propagated under (a) supplementary UV-B (9 kJ m−2 day−1 ) in controlled environment (CE) conditions, and (b) field conditions, where plants were placed under three horticultural films with differing UV transmissions. In both experiments, UV-B caused the greatest reductions in leaf expansion and final leaf size, with some reductions attributable to UV-A wavelengths. In supplementary UV-B conditions, adaxial cell size was reduced, while in field plants, both cell size and cell number were lower in an increased UV environment, as was the case with abaxial cells in CE plants. Although leaf turgor and leaf extensibility were not affected by UV wavelengths, breaking strain of leaf tissue was decreased under supplementary UV-B. Cell-wall peroxidase activity was increased in both supplementary UV conditions and in the field, where only a zero UV environment showed no upregulation of cell-wall peroxidase. 相似文献
