Detection and study of Rb I Rydberg states

We describe the details of an experiment using an atomic beam of rubidium which allowed us to detect by field ionization techniques the np Rydberg states from n = 28 up to n = 78, to detect also ns and nd states using a Stark mixing, and for all of these detected states to check the classical law E_c = [16n^*4]^?1 concerning the critical ionizing electric field E_c. It turns out that for n as high as 65 this law is quite well verified.     

Oligoacenes: theoretical prediction of open-shell singlet diradical ground states

A series of oligoacenes from benzene to decacene were studied computationally with DFT and CASSCF methods. In contrast to the common view that acenes are closed-shell systems or may have a triplet ground state, these results offer the first theoretical predictions for the singlet ground state and diradical character for oligoacenes. The nature of the ground states of these molecules arises from the disjoint nature of the NBMOs that are singly occupied in the diradical.     

Experimental charge density of a potential DHO synthetase inhibitor: dimethyl-trans-2-oxohexahydro-pyrimidine-4,6-dicarboxylate

The experimental charge density distribution of dimethyl-trans-2-oxohexahydro-pyrimidine-4,6-dicarboxylate 1 has been determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data measured at 100 K, in terms of the rigid-pseudoatom formalism. Multipole refinement converged at R(F) = 0.034 for 7283 reflections with I > 3 sigma (I) and sin theta/lambda < or = 1.13 A(-1). Covalent and hydrogen bonding interactions are analyzed using a topological analysis of the Laplacian of the charge density. The experimentally derived electrostatic potential mapped onto the reactive surface of the molecule reveals the potential binding sites of 1.     

Invariant manifolds of partial functional differential equations

This paper is concerned with the existence, smoothness and attractivity of invariant manifolds for evolutionary processes on general Banach spaces when the nonlinear perturbation has a small global Lipschitz constant and locally C^k-smooth near the trivial solution. Such a nonlinear perturbation arises in many applications through the usual cut-off procedure, but the requirement in the existing literature that the nonlinear perturbation is globally C^k-smooth and has a globally small Lipschitz constant is hardly met in those systems for which the phase space does not allow a smooth cut-off function. Our general results are illustrated by and applied to partial functional differential equations for which the phase space (where r>0 and being a Banach space) has no smooth inner product structure and for which the validity of variation-of-constants formula is still an interesting open problem.     

Ultrafast manipulation of antiferromagnetism of NiO

Photoexcitation of antiferromagnetic NiO leads to ultrafast reorientation of Ni2+ spins due to change of the magnetic anisotropy. Recovery of the magnetic ground state occurs as coherent oscillation of the antiferromagnetic order parameter between hard- and easy-axis states manifesting itself as quantum beating. The coherence time is approximately 1 ns with the beating frequency being determined by the anisotropy energy.     

Periodic knolls and valleys: coexistence of solid and liquid states in granular suspensions

We report the spontaneous emergence of a doubly periodic train of sedimented knolls in a dense suspension. These solidified knolls rise out of, and coexist alongside, a sea of freely flowing liquid in a slowly rotating horizontal bottle. We apply a variable viscosity model that permits simultaneous analysis of fluidlike and solidlike behaviors that are ubiquitous in a variety of sedimenting flows. The model generates qualitative agreement with experiments, and produces new insights into mechanisms by which sedimented structures form.     

Attachment of glycosaminoglycan oligosaccharides to thiol-derivatised gold surfaces

Glycosaminoglycan oligosaccharides have been attached to thiol-derivatised gold surfaces, via the formation of mercury-sugar adducts at the non-reducing end, representing a new method of generating versatile glycoconjugates incorporating this class of biologically and medically important carbohydrate.     

N-heterocyclic carbenes as highly efficient catalysts for the cyclotrimerization of isocyanates

[reaction: see text] A series of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) were evaluated as potential catalysts for the cyclotrimerization of isocyanates to afford isocyanurates. 1,3-Bis-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-ylidene (SIPr) was found to be a highly efficient catalyst for the cyclotrimerization of a variety of isocyanates.
