Effect of acetate on ferrihydrite crystallization

Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to follow the aging of ferrihydrite with different amounts of acetate, to achieve more crystalline products. Mössbauer spectra of fresh samples did not show any magnetic components. After two years aging, the solids presented crystalline fractions. Hematite formation was inhibited as acetate content increased in solids. For an acetate/iron molar ratio equal to 0.63 goethite was formed instead of hematite. X-ray diffraction confirmed these results. This work shows that synthetic samples can be used for elucidating the anti-hematitic effect of organic matter already detected in soils.     

Solvent dependent conformational isomerism and ligand oxidation of novel Ru(II) cyclen complexes

The synthesis of cis-[Ru(II)(cyclen)(L)(x)](n+) (cyclen = 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane and L = 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), phenanthroline (phen) or 4-cyanopyridinium (4-NCpyH(+))) is reported. The freshly prepared complexes are stable in aprotic solvents and cyclen undergoes oxidative dehydrogenation reaction at high pH. These compounds also present solvent dependent conformational isomerization.     

Gas chromatographic quantification of amino acid enantiomers in food matrices by their N(O,S)-ethoxycarbonyl heptafluorobutyl ester derivatives

Several amino acid enantiomer derivatives were prepared with different chloroformates and analysed by gas chromatography (GC) on a Chirasil-L-Val GC column, at a temperature below 200 degrees C. Among them the N(O,S)-ethoxycarbonyl heptafluorobutyl esters presented the best compromise between short retention times, high yield responses and good resolution for almost all the tested amino acids. These derivatives proved to be suited for quantification of amino acids in aqueous media, with L-p-chlorophenylalanine as internal standard. The developed procedure was applied to several food samples for determination of their free amino acid profiles.

[reaction: see text] During the course of drug metabolism studies, a major metabolite of compound 1 was detected in rhesus monkeys and assigned structure 4. The intriguing biotransformation of 1 leading to 4 was confirmed by a 19-step total synthesis starting from resorcinol (11), the key feature of which was the construction of the oxygen bridge utilizing a phenolic oxidation and trapping sequence. In addition, the synthesis of a related metabolite (5) is described.     

A thieno-2H-chromene alpha-amino acid derivative: synthesis and photochromic properties

[structure: see text] A new photochromic thieno-2H-chromene alpha-amino acid derivative was prepared by C-N palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling of a bromothieno-2H-chromene with the aminated aromatic side chain of the methyl ester of a N,N-diprotected amino acid. Its good photochromic properties demonstrated by flash photolysis and continuous irradiation indicate a possible application in ophthalmic lenses. It may also be inserted into peptides to give photoinduced reversible structural changes.     

The coherent potential approximation is a realizable effective medium scheme

The effective electrical conductivity of an aggregate, composed of grains of various conductivities, is frequently estimated by the coherent potential approximation, which embodies a local effective medium concept. It is proved rigorously that this approximation is exact for a wide class of hierarchical model composites made of spherical grains: the starting material 0 in the hierarchy is chosen arbitrarily, otherwise, materialj=1, 2, ... consists of equisized spheres, sayj-spheres, of arbitrary conductivities embedded in materialj — 1. The spatial distribution of thej-spheres must satisfy a mild homogeneity condition and their radiusr _j must, asymptotically, increase faster than exponentially withj. Furthermore, the minimum spacing, 2s _j , between thej-spheres is such that the ratios _j /r _j diverges. On the basis of these and some further ancillary conditions it is established that the coherent potential approximation becomes asymptotically exact for the effective conductivity of materialj. The results extend to other effective parameters of the composites, including the thermal conductivity, dielectric constant and magnetic permeability. In addition, the model composites and the proof of realizability may be generalized to allow non-spherical grains.
