Most maintenance studies deal with the problem of maintenance-costs optimization, given the cost of the available maintenance actions and a cost objective function. The focus in this paper is on yet another relevant aspect namely the improvement in performance that results from a maintenance action in terms of performance criteria of interest. The evaluation of performance improvement requires comparisons of random quantities which is done by means of suitable probabilistic ordering notions. Different modelling situations are considered, and for each of them conditions are obtained on the life distributions of the present item, and the new one if of different type, that ensure performance improvement. Apart from providing a decision tool for maintenance application, the paper also contributes to clarifying relationships between (probabilistic) ordering notions and aging properties within the maintenance context.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations of Ca+2 ions near protein were performed with three force fields: GROMOS96, OPLS-AA, and CHARMM22. The simulations reveal major, force-field dependent, inconsistencies in the interaction between the Ca+2 ions with the protein. The variations are attributed to the nonbonded parameterizations of the Ca+2-carboxylates interactions. The simulations results were compared to experimental data, using the Ca+2-HCOO- equilibrium as a model. The OPLS-AA force field grossly overestimates the binding affinity of the Ca+2 ions to the carboxylate whereas the GROMOS96 and CHARMM22 force fields underestimate the stability of the complex. Optimization of the Lennard-Jones parameters for the Ca+2-carboxylate interactions were carried out, yielding new parameters which reproduce experimental data.  相似文献

Antibacterial effects of carbon nanotubes: size does matter!   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
We provide the first evidence that the size (diameter) of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a key factor governing their antibacterial effects and that the likely main CNT-cytotoxicity mechanism is cell membrane damage by direct contact with CNTs. Experiments with well-characterized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) demonstrate that SWNTs are much more toxic to bacteria than MWNTs. Gene expression data show that in the presence of both MWNTs and SWNTs, Escherichia coli expresses high levels of stress-related gene products, with the quantity and magnitude of expression being much higher in the presence of SWNTs.  相似文献

Prediction of bacterial deposition rates onto substrates in natural aquatic systems is quite challenging because of the inherent complexity of such systems. In this study, we compare experimental deposition kinetics of nonmotile bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) on an alginate-coated substrate in a radial stagnation point flow (RSPF) system to predictions based on DLVO theory. The "softness" of the surface layer of the bacteria and alginate-coated substrate was considered in the calculations of their electrokinetic surface properties, and the relevance of both the classical zeta potential and the outer surface potential as surrogates for surface potential was investigated. Independent of the used electrical potentials, we showed that significant discrepancies exist between theory and experiments. Analysis of microscopic images in the RSPF system has demonstrated, for the first time, that irreversible deposition of particles or cells entrapped in the secondary energy minimum can occur on the alginate layer, despite the hydrodynamic forces resulting from the radial flow in the RSPF system. It is suggested that polymeric structures associated with the surface of the particle/cell and the alginate-coated substrate are responsible for the transition between the secondary minimum and primary energy well. This mode of deposition is likely to be important in the deposition of microorganisms in complex aquatic systems.  相似文献

We provide the first direct evidence that highly purified single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) exhibit strong antimicrobial activity. By using a pristine SWNT with a narrow diameter distribution, we demonstrate that cell membrane damage resulting from direct contact with SWNT aggregates is the likely mechanism leading to bacterial cell death. This finding may be useful in the application of SWNTs as building blocks for antimicrobial materials.  相似文献

We prove induced Ramsey theorems in which the monochromatic induced subgraph satisfies that all members of a prescribed set of its partial isomorphisms extend to automorphisms of the colored graph (without requirement of preservation of colors). We consider vertex and edge colorings, and extensions of partial isomorphisms in the set of all partial isomorphisms between singletons as considered by Babai and Sós (European J Combin 6(2):101–114, 1985), the set of all finite partial isomorphisms as considered by Hrushovski (Combinatorica 12(4):411–416, 1992), Herwig (Combinatorica 15:365–371, 1995) and Herwig-Lascar (Trans Amer Math Soc 5:1985–2021, 2000), and the set of all total isomorphisms. We observe that every finite graph embeds into a finite vertex transitive graph by a so called bi-embedding, an embedding that is compatible with a monomorphism between the corresponding automorphism groups. We also show that every countable graph bi-embeds into Rado’s universal countable graph Γ.  相似文献

Time-resolved fluorescence decay of flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) was studied at room temperature in water and water-methanol mixtures by a fluorescence upconversion technique. The observations were focused on the most initial decay phase (200 ps), before the residual fluorescence assumes a single exponential decay, typical for an extended conformation of the fluorophore. Within the first few picoseconds, where most of the electron transfer coupled quenching takes place, the emission decay curves could be fitted by a stretched exponent, compatible with the inhomogeneous distance dependent electron transfer model. This implies that the population of the excited FAD molecules exhibits a large number of non-identical states, each with its own separation between the donor (adenine) and acceptor (isoalloxazine) moieties, having its own rate of electron transfer. To evaluate the distribution of the separation between the donor-acceptor pair, we carried out molecular dynamics simulations of closed conformation of the FAD in water and water-methanol mixtures, sampling the structure at 10 fs intervals. The analysis of the dynamics reveals that within the 4 ps time frame, where most of the nonexponential fluorescence relaxation takes place, the relative motion of the donor-acceptor pair is consistent with a one-dimensional Brownian motion, where the diffusion coefficient and the shape of the confining potential well are solvent dependent. The presence of methanol enhances the diffusion constant and widens the width of the potential well. On the basis of these parameters, the relaxation dynamics was accurately reconstructed as an electron transfer reaction in an inhomogeneous system where the reactants are diffusing within the time frame of the observation.  相似文献

We demonstrate the ability to stably sequester individual single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) within self-contained nanometer-scale aqueous volumes arrayed in an organic continuum. Large areal densities of 4 × 10(9) cm(-2) are readily achieved. SWNTs are incorporated into a surfactant mesophase which forms 2.3 nm diameter water channels by lyotropic self-assembly. Near-infrared fluorescence spectroscopy demonstrates that the SWNTs exist as well-dispersed tubes that are stable over several months and through multiple cycles of heating and cooling. Absence of physical distortion of the mesophase suggests that the SWNTs are stabilized by adsorbed surfactants that do not extend considerably from the surface. Our findings have important implications for templated assembly of carbon nanotubes using soft mesophases and the development of functional nanocomposites.  相似文献

Real-time monitoring of light scattering and UV-vis profiles of four different Cp*Ir(III) precursors under various conditions give insight into nanoparticle formation during oxidation catalysis with NaIO(4) as primary oxidant. Complexes bearing chelate ligands such as 2,2'-bipyridine, 2-phenylpyridine, or 2-(2'-pyridyl)-2-propanolate were found to be highly resistant toward particle formation, and oxidation catalysis with these compounds is thus believed to be molecular in nature under our conditions. Even with the less stable hydroxo/aqua complex [Cp*(2)Ir(2)(μ-OH)(3)]OH, nanoparticle formation strongly depended on the exact conditions and elapsed time. Test experiments on the isolated particles and comparison of UV-vis data with light scattering profiles revealed that the formation of a deep purple-blue color (~580 nm) is not indicative of particle formation during oxidation catalysis with molecular iridium precursors as suggested previously.  相似文献

We continue the work started in [6] and show that all monotonically normal (in short: MN) spaces are maximally resolvable if and only if all uniform ultrafilters are maximally decomposable. As a consequence we get that the existence of an MN space which is not maximally resolvable is equi-consistent with the existence of a measurable cardinal. We also show that it is consistent (modulo the consistency of a measurable cardinal) that there is an MN space X with |X| = Δ(X) = ? ω which is not ω 1-resolvable. It follows from the results of [6] that this is best possible.  相似文献
