We report two experiments on graphene nanostructures. The first was performed on a graphene nanoribbon, where the nature of electronic transport was investigated in detail. Electrons or holes are found to localize in pockets of the potential along the ribbon. Transport is governed by the joint action of localization and Coulomb interaction. The temperature-dependence of the conductance shows activated behavior at temperatures above a few Kelvin. The activation energy retraces the edges of Coulomb blockade diamonds found in nonlinear transport. In the second experiment the metallic tip of a low-temperature scanning force microscope was scanned above a graphene quantum dot. In addition to the familiar Coulomb blockade fringes, localized states are detected forming in the constrictions connecting the dot to source and drain.  相似文献

Abstract

The paper studies the evolution of the thermomechanical and electric state of a thermoviscoelastic thermistor that is in frictional contact with a reactive foundation. The mechanical process is dynamic, while the electric process is quasistatic. Friction is modeled with a nonmonotone relation between the tangential traction and tangential velocity. Frictional heat generation is taken into account and so is the strong dependence of the electric conductivity on the temperature. The mathematical model for the process is in the form of a system that consists of dynamic hyperbolic subdifferential inclusion for the mechanical state coupled with a nonlinear parabolic equation for the temperature and an elliptic equation for the electric potential. The paper establishes the existence of a weak solution to the problem by using time delays, a priori estimates and a convergence method.  相似文献

Renewal systems are symbolic dynamical systems originally introduced by Adler. IfW is a finite set of words over a finite alphabetA, then the renewal system generated byW is the subshiftX WA Z formed by bi-infinite concatenations of words fromW. Motivated by Adler’s question of whether every irreducible shift of finite type is conjugate to a renewal system, we prove that for every shift of finite type there is a renewal system having the same entropy. We also show that every shift of finite type can be approximated from above by renewal systems, and that by placing finite-type constraints on possible concatenations, we obtain all sofic systems. Here we describe the story behind the link between molecular chirality and macroscopic phenomena, the latter being a probe for the direct assignment of absolute configuration of chiral molecules. First, a brief tour of the history of molecular stereochemistry, starting with the classic experiment reported by Pasteur in 1848 on the separation of enantiomorphous crystals of a salt of tartaric acid, and his conclusion that the molecules of life are chiral of single-handedness. With time, this study raised, inter alia, two fundamental questions: the absolute configuration of chiral molecules and how a molecule of given configuration shapes the enantiomorphous morphology of its crystal. As for the first question, following the beginning of crystal structure determination by X-ray diffraction in 1912, it took almost 40 years before Bijvoet assigned molecular chirality through the esoteric method involving anomalous X-ray scattering. We have been able to address and link both questions through ‘everyday concepts of left and right’ (in the words of Jack Dunitz) by the use of ‘tailor-made’ auxiliaries. By such means, it proved possible to reveal, through morphology, etch patterns, epitaxy and symmetry reduction of both chiral and, paradoxically, centrosymmetric crystals, the basic chiral symmetry of the molecules of life, the α-amino acids and sugars.  相似文献

The negatively charged silicon‐vacancy center (SiV) in diamond is a potential high‐quality source of single‐indistinguishable photons for quantum information processing and quantum electrodynamics applications. However, when embedded in bulk diamond, this emitter suffers from both, relatively low extraction efficiency attributed to total internal reflection as well as nondeterministic location. On the other hand, its implementation in nanodiamonds is impeded by optical dephasing owing to their degraded surface quality. Here a robust and deterministic template‐assisted bottom‐up process for the creation of high‐quality diamond nanopyramids incorporating SiVs is reported. This method employs a predefinition of high‐precision nanopillars by e‐beam lithography and dry etching, and subsequent epitaxial overgrowth during which Si atoms are introduced into diamond. The overgrown layer, including the nanopyramid arrays, is epitaxial as confirmed by comprehensive analyses. This diamond nanopyramid, hosting the SiVs, can pave the way toward efficient localized single‐photon source arrays and potentially outshine nanodiamonds and nanosized structures prepared by a top‐down method. The lateral confinement of the SiVs inside the deterministic nanosized pyramids enables their positioning at the center of cavities and optical structures for enhanced quantum efficiency and light–matter manipulation, and their employment as a system to explore collective coherent interactions between ensembles and confined light.  相似文献
