Survey of experimental results on μCF including hyperfine effects

Complementary to the investigations of the most efficient dt cycle, also the other muon-induced fusion cycles in mixtures of hydrogen isotopes have been studied. The results of these dedicated experiments provide rich information about muon-induced few-body reactions and contribute significantly to a better overall understanding of CF. A summary of the recent progress will be presented. Special emphasis will be put on two characteristic examples, namely a new experimental approach to study the muonic cascade in H-D mixtures and the systematic study of hyperfine effects in muon-induced reactions.     

The kinetics of muon-catalyzed dt fusion

A main source of information about the muon-catalyzed fusion cycle in D-T mixtures are the cycling rates _c, which are characteristic for the kinetic equilibrium of states attained rapidly in dense targets. The measurement, analysis and interpretation of these rates will be discussed, concentrating on the extensive set of rates observed at PSI over the last decade in gaseous, liquid and solid targets.Invited talk presented by Peter Kammel.     

Toward separation of nuclear spin isomers with coherent light.

We propose an approach for separating nuclear spin isomers with coherent light and illustrate it by numerical calculations using fulvene as a model system. The scheme employs the equivalence of torsion and interchange of equivalent H-atoms in a class of molecules of which fulvene is a simple example. The exchange symmetry couples with the rotational symmetry to produce a spatial distinction between the two photo-excited nuclear spin isomers, and wavepacket interferometry is applied to separate the species.     

Etude des conditions d'accès au triazino-1,2,4-[4,5-b] indazole

1,2,4-Triazino[4,5-b]indazol-1(2H)one and its derivatives were prepared by transposition of 3-[2-(-1,3,4-oxadiazolyl)]indazole or by ring closure of indazole ethoxymethylidenehydrazides. The synthesis of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-l,2,4-triazino[4,5-b]indazole-1,4-dione was achieved by cyclising the N-carbethoxyhydrazide of indazole-3-carboxylic acid and the synthesis of 1,2,4-triazino-[4,5-b]indazol-4(3H)one was made by cyclising the N-carbethoxy-hydrazone of indazole-3-carboxaldehyde. The Oxydation of 1,2,4-triazino[4,5-b]indazole-l(2H)thione gave 1,2,4-triazino-[4,5-b]indazoles. Nmr spectral data are reported.     

Cluster aggregation: a new method for producing atomic and molecular clusters

A new method for the production of cold free clusters is presented. A beam of large rare gas clusters is passed through a low pressure atomic gas. The gas atoms are picked up by the rare gas clusters whereby they condense. A complete evaporation of rare gas atoms from the newly formed clusters then follows once the number of captured particles becomes sufficiently large. The method is demonstrated for Xe clusters with size up to 500 atoms per cluster but it should work for most materials, including the refractory materials.     

Metallic Conductivity in Metal Tetraaza [14]Annulene Iodides: The Crystal Structures of Dihydrodibenzo-[b,i]-1, 4, 8, 11-tetraazacyclotetradecinenickel and -palladium Iodides

Single crystals of dihydrodibenzo[b, i]-1, 4, 8, 11-tetraazacyclotetradecinenickel iodide show metallic conductivity between room temperature and approx. 110 K. The crystals are orthorhombic, space group I_bam with four formula units per cell of the following dimensions: a = 20.245, b = 13.416, c = 6.418 Å. The analogous palladium complex is isomorphous, the cell constants being a = 20.452, b = 13.430 and c = 6.499 Å. A number of other partially oxidized metal tetraaza [14]annulenes also show electrical conductivity.
