Background
Anesthetics dose-dependently shift electroencephalographic (EEG) activity towards high-amplitude, slow rhythms, indicative of a synchronization of neuronal activity in thalamocortical networks. Additionally, they uncouple brain areas in higher (gamma) frequency ranges possibly underlying conscious perception. It is currently thought that both effects may impair brain function by impeding proper information exchange between cortical areas. But what happens at the local network level? Local networks with strong excitatory interconnections may be more resilient towards global changes in brain rhythms, but depend heavily on locally projecting, inhibitory interneurons. As anesthetics bias cortical networks towards inhibition, we hypothesized that they may cause excessive synchrony and compromise information processing already on a small spatial scale. Using a recently introduced measure of signal independence, cross-approximate entropy (XApEn), we investigated to what degree anesthetics synchronized local cortical network activity. We recorded local field potentials (LFP) from the somatosensory cortex of three rats chronically implanted with multielectrode arrays and compared activity patterns under control (awake state) with those at increasing concentrations of isoflurane, enflurane and halothane.Results
Cortical LFP signals were more synchronous, as expressed by XApEn, in the presence of anesthetics. Specifically, XApEn was a monotonously declining function of anesthetic concentration. Isoflurane and enflurane were indistinguishable; at a concentration of 1 MAC (the minimum alveolar concentration required to suppress movement in response to noxious stimuli in 50% of subjects) both volatile agents reduced XApEn by about 70%, whereas halothane was less potent (50% reduction).Conclusions
The results suggest that anesthetics strongly diminish the independence of operation of local cortical neuronal populations, and that the quantification of these effects in terms of XApEn has a similar discriminatory power as changes of spontaneous action potential rates. Thus, XApEn of field potentials recorded from local cortical networks provides valuable information on the anesthetic state of the brain.993.
Unconditionally secure nonrelativistic bit commitment is known to be impossible in both the classical and the quantum world. However, when committing to a string of n bits at once, how far can we stretch the quantum limits? In this Letter, we introduce a framework of quantum schemes where Alice commits a string of n bits to Bob, in such a way that she can only cheat on a bits and Bob can learn at most b bits of information before the reveal phase. Our results are twofold: we show by an explicit construction that in the traditional approach, where the reveal and guess probabilities form the security criteria, no good schemes can exist: a + b is at least n. If, however, we use a more liberal criterion of security, the accessible information, we construct schemes where a = 4log2(n) + O(1) and b = 4, which is impossible classically. We discuss the realization of the quantum-critical non-Fermi-liquid state, originally discovered within the two-impurity Kondo model, in double-quantum-dot systems. Contrary to common belief, the corresponding fixed point is robust against particle-hole and various other asymmetries and is unstable only to charge transfer between the two dots. We propose an experimental setup where such charge transfer processes are suppressed, allowing a controlled approach to the quantum-critical state. Cationic dinuclear Cu(II) complexes 3 and 4 have been prepared using the novel hydroquinone-based imine chelators 2,5-((i)Pr(2)NCH(2)CH(2)N[double bond, length as m-dash]CH)(2)-1,4-(OH)(2)-C(6)H(2) (1) and 2,5-(pyCH(2)CH(2)N[double bond, length as m-dash]CH)(2)-1,4-(OH)(2)-C(6)H(2) (2), respectively (py = 2-pyridyl). X-Ray quality crystals of both complexes were grown from their DMF solutions. The sterically more encumbered compound crystallizes in the form of discrete dinuclear entities with Cu(II) centres in a distorted square-planar ligand environment (one coordination site is occupied by a DMF molecule). The pyridyl derivative 4 features dinuclear hydroquinone-bridged subunits similar to 3. However, the Cu(II) ions are now six-coordinate with two DMF molecules at an axial and an equatorial position of a Jahn-Teller-distorted octahedron. Moreover, the dinuclear subunits are no longer isolated but linked with each other via bridging hydroquinone oxygen atoms which occupy the second apical position of each octahedron. The structure suggests that the magnetic properties of the resulting coordination polymer of 4 could be described by a model valid for dimerized spin chains. As a result of this analysis the antiferromagnetic coupling constants J(1)/k(B) = 9.9 K (intradimer) and J(2)/k(B) = 0.9 K (interdimer) are obtained. Both in 3 and in 4, the hydroquinone --> semiquinone transition of the central bridging unit (E degrees ' = + 0.57 V, 3; E degrees ' = + 0.51 V, 4; DMF; vs. SCE) displays features of chemical reversibility. Heterobimetallic compounds of the alkaline-earth metals show a wide structural variety with strongly differing reactivity patterns. The combination of magnesium and alkali metal amides yields cyclic molecules with an extreme high reactivity which often are considered as "inverse crowns" with the metal atoms as coordination sites for Lewis bases. In other metallates of the alkaline-earth metals an activation of alkyl groups succeeds. In alkaline-earth metal zincates an inverse coordination of the type M(2)[(mu-R)(2)ZnR](2) is observed and the alkyl groups are in bridging positions between zinc and the s-block metals thus forming a very reactive M-C-Zn three-center-two-electron bond. Furthermore, the metals of the carbon group form alkaline-earth metal-silicon, -germanium and -tin bonds or, in the presence of very strong Lewis bases, even solvent-separated ion pairs. The unimolecular reactions of radical cations and cations derived from phenylarsane, C6H5AsH2 (1) and dideutero phenylarsane, C6H5AsD2 (1-d2), were investigated by methods of tandem mass spectrometry and theoretical calculations. The mass spectrometric experiments reveal that the molecular ion of phenylarsane, 1*+, exhibits different reactivity at low and high internal excess energy. Only at low internal energy the observed fragmentations are as expected, that is the molecular ion 1*+ decomposes almost exclusively by loss of an H atom. The deuterated derivative 1-d2 with an AsD2 group eliminates selectively a D atom under these conditions. The resulting phenylarsenium ion [C6H5AsH]+, 2+, decomposes rather easily by loss of the As atom to give the benzene radical cation [C6H6]*+ and is therefore of low abundance in the 70 eV EI mass spectrum. At high internal excess energy, the ion 1*+ decomposes very differently either by elimination of an H2 molecule, or by release of the As atom, or by loss of an AsH fragment. Final products of these reactions are either the benzoarsenium ion 4*+, or the benzonium ion [C6H7]+, or the benzene radical cation, [C6H6]*+. As key-steps, these fragmentations contain reductive eliminations from the central As atom under H-H or C-H bond formation. Labeling experiments show that H/D exchange reactions precede these fragmentations and, specifically, that complete positional exchange of the H atoms in 1*+ occurs. Computations at the UMP2/6-311+G(d)//UHF/6-311+G(d) level agree best with the experimental results and suggest: (i) 1*+ rearranges (activation enthalpy of 93 kJ mol(-1)) to a distinctly more stable (DeltaH(r)(298) = -64 kJ mol(-1)) isomer 1 sigma*+ with a structure best represented as a distonic radical cation sigma complex between AsH and benzene. (ii) The six H atoms of the benzene moiety of 1 sigma*+ become equivalent by a fast ring walk of the AsH group. (iii) A reversible isomerization 1+<==>1 sigma*+ scrambles eventually all H atoms over all positions in 1*+. The distonic radical cation 1*+ is predisposed for the elimination of an As atom or an AsH fragment. The calculations are in accordance with the experimentally preferred reactions when the As atom and the AsH fragment are generated in the quartet and triplet state, respectively. Alternatively, 1*(+) undergoes a reductive elimination of H2 from the AsH2 group via a remarkably stable complex of the phenylarsandiyl radical cation, [C6H5As]*+ and an H2 molecule. 相似文献

Cluster increments derived for individual cluster fragments reproduce the DFT computed relative stabilities of macropolyhedral boranes usually within +/-6 kcal mol(-1). A simple summation procedure helps to select the best partner for a given cluster fragment in order to construct the thermodynamically most stable macropolyhedral borane. Cluster increments are considerably smaller for nido-cluster fragments with an even number of vertexes than for odd nido-cluster fragments pointing towards high thermodynamic stability of macropolyhedral boranes with even numbered nido-units. 相似文献

The adsorption of cinchonidine (CD) and cinchonine (CN) on Pt(111) and Pd(111) single crystals has been investigated by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in an ultrahigh vacuum system. In time-lapse series the mobilities of different adsorption species have been determined on a single molecule basis and with varying hydrogen background pressures in the system. The diastereomeric cinchona alkaloids, CD and CN, which are widely used as chiral modifiers of platinum group metals in catalytic enantioselective hydrogenation, showed similar adsorption modes and diffusion behavior on Pt(111), except that the flatly adsorbed CN molecules which were free (not in a dimer/cluster) were significantly more mobile than their CD analogues. CD adsorbed on Pd(111) showed similar adsorption modes as observed on Pt(111) but at considerably higher mobility of the flatly absorbed species already in the low-pressure region. The observed adsorption behaviors are discussed in the context of independent ATR-IR measurements and theoretical calculations. Special emphasis is put on the nonlinear effect observed in hydrogenation reactions with CD/CN mixtures.
