Logics from ?{￠}\sqrt{^{\prime}} Quasi-MV Algebras

The purpose of the present article is to extend the scope of some investigations about abstract logics arising quite naturally out of Quasi-MV algebras (for short, qMV algebras) also to ?{^￠}\sqrt{^{\prime}} qMV algebras. We will therefore introduce, mutually compare and (in some cases) axiomatise several logics arising out of the variety of ?{^￠}\sqrt{^{\prime}} qMV algebras and out of some important subclasses of such. Subsequently, we will investigate the same logics by resorting to the methods and techniques of abstract algebraic logic.     

Using chemical shift anisotropy to resolve isotropic signals in solid-state NMR

A key problem in solid-state NMR is resolving overlapping isotropic signals. We present here a two-dimensional method which can enable sites with the same isotropic chemical shift to be distinguished according to their chemical shift anisotropy and asymmetry. The method involves correlating sideband spectra at different effective spinning rates using CSA-amplification pulse sequences. The resulting two-dimensional correlation pattern allows very accurate determination of the chemical shift principal values in addition to the recovery of parameters for two overlapping patterns which allows the resolution of overlapping signals.     

Passivation of aluminum with alkyl phosphonic acids for biochip applications

Self-assembly of decylphosphonic acid (DPA) and octadecylphosphonic acid (ODPA) was studied on aluminum films using XPS, ToF-SIMS and surface wettability. Modified aluminum films were tested for passivation against silanization and subsequent oligonucleotide attachment. Passivation ratios of at least 450:1 compared to unprotected aluminum were obtained, as quantified by attachment of radio-labeled oligos.     

Novel Copolymers of Styrene and Alkyl and Alkoxy Ring‐Trisubstituted Methyl 2‐Cyano‐3‐phenyl‐2‐propenoates

Electrophilic trisubstituted ethylene monomers, akyl and alkoxy ring‐trisubstituted methyl 2‐cyano‐3‐phenyl‐2‐propenoates, RC₆H₂CH[dbnd]C(CN)CO₂CH_3, (where R is 2,3‐dimethyl‐4‐methoxy, 2,5‐dimethyl‐4‐methoxy‐, 2,3,4‐trimethoxy‐, 2,4,5‐trimethoxy, 2,4,6‐trimethoxy, and 2,4‐dimethoxy‐3‐methyl), were synthesized by the piperidine catalyzed Knoevenagel condensation of ring‐substituted benzaldehydes and methyl cyanoacetate, and characterized by CHN elemental analysis, IR, ¹H‐ and ¹³C‐NMR. Novel copolymers of the ethylenes and styrene were prepared at equimolar monomer feed composition by solution copolymerization in the presence of a radical initiator (AIBN) at 70°C. The composition of the copolymers was calculated from nitrogen analysis, and the structures were analyzed by IR, ¹H and ¹³C NMR, GPC, DSC, and TGA. High T_g of the copolymers in comparison with that of polystyrene indicates a substantial decrease in chain mobility of the copolymer due to the high dipolar character of the trisubstituted ethylene monomer unit. The gravimetric analysis indicated that the copolymers decompose in the 283–306°C range.     

Safer Conditions for the Curtius Rearrangement of 1,3,5‐Benzenetricarboxylic Acid

A rapid method to prepare 1,3,5‐triaminobenzene and its derivatives is the tris‐Curtius rearrangment of 1,3,5‐benzenetricarboxylic acid. The hazards associated with the acyl azide route are minimized by using 1,2‐dichloroethane as solvent. A second method that avoids acyl azide preparation uses diphenylphosphoryl azide to yield the tricarbamate in one step.     

Mild Bioconjugation Through the Oxidative Coupling of ortho‐Aminophenols and Anilines with Ferricyanide

Using a small‐molecule‐based screen, ferricyanide was identified as a mild and efficient oxidant for the coupling of anilines and o‐aminophenols on protein substrates. This reaction is compatible with thiols and 1,2‐diols, allowing its use in the creation of complex bioconjugates for use in biotechnology and materials applications.
