Azulenophanes V synthesis and physical properties of [2](5,7)azuleno[2]para- and metacyclophanes

The title compounds $\text{3}$ and $\text{4}$ were synthesized by the usual dithia[3.3]phane coupling and photodesulfurization route. Investigation of their physical properties established their molecular dimension and conformation. Transannular interaction disclosed by their electronic spectra was explained by MO calculations.     

Small-Angle electron scattering and electron density in carbon dioxide

The total (elastic and inelastic) intensity of electrons scattered by CO₂ was measured in the s range of 1 to 12 Å^?1 and compared with the theoretical intensity calculated from the Hartree-Fock molecular wave function and those calculated for the independent-atom-model (IAM ) molecule. In the range of s ? 4 Å^?1 the electron correlation effect on the total scattered intensity was found to be represented by that for the IAM molecule.     

Molecular rheology of concentrated polymer systems. I

The primitive chain model of Doi and Edwards is generalized to include the short-time relaxation process. Stress relaxation after a sudden imposition of strain is studied in detail. It is shown that in the linear region (small strain) stress relaxation occurs in two steps, the relaxation of chain segments between the fixed entanglement points, and the relaxation of the entanglement points, in accordance with the conventional picture, whereas in the nonlinear region (large strain) there appears a new relaxation process between the above two. The characteristic time of this process is the Rouse relaxation time which the entire chain would have if there were no entanglements, and increases with the square of the molecular weight. This result is consistent with experimental observations.     

Synthesis and reactivity of β-cyclodextrin-histamine as enzyme model

Cyclodextrin (CD) has a hydrophobic cavity which acts like a binding site of an actual enzyme. But enzymatic turnover reaction did not occur in CD-catalyzed reactions. -CD was modified by a histamine group to attach a reactive functional group. -CD-histamine accelerates the hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl acetate. Catalytic rate constant of this reaction is close to an actual enzyme, -chymotrypsin. Enzymatic turnover reaction is realized with this compound at around neutral pH value.     

An anomalous emission excited near the absorption edge of pyrene crystals

Emission spectra and decay times of the fluorescence excited at the absorption edge region in pyrene crystals were measured. At liquid nitrogen temperature, the fluorescence under the excitation at 390 nm is considered as the excimer emission and its band peak shifts a little to the short wavelength in comparison with that of the excimer emission under the excitation at 360 nm. The emission decay times under the excitation at the 390 nm and 360 nm are about 155 ns and 180 ns, respectively, at liquid nitrogen temperature. The former decay time changes its value abruptly near 127 K. This abrupt change of the decay time may be due to the phase transition in pyrene crystals.     

First-principles study of the (0 0 1) surface of cubic SrZrO3

Density functional calculations have been used to investigate the (0 0 1) surface of cubic SrZrO₃ with both SrO and ZrO₂ termination. Surface structure and electronic structure have been obtained. The SrO surface is found to be similar to its counterpart in SrTiO₃, while there are marked differences between the ZrO₂ and TiO₂ terminations in SrZrO₃ and SrTiO₃, respectively, concerning surface relaxation and rumpling. For the ZrO₂-terminated surface of SrZrO₃, the covalency of the interaction between the outmost Zr and the O beneath is enhanced as a result of their bond contraction. The band gap reduction and the presence of the surface states are also discussed in relation with the behavior of the electrostatic potential.     

Organometallic compounds : XII. stereochemical interconversion reactions between 1,1′−bis(α-hydroxyalkyl)ferrocenes and 7-oxa[3]ferrocenophanes

Meso and racemic isomers of 1,1′-bis(α-hydroxyalkyl)ferrocene derivatives, and trans and cis isomers of 7-oxa[3]ferrocenophanes have been isolated. The configurations of these isomers have been determined both by spectroscopy and from their reaction behavior. It has been found that the ring-closure and ring-opening interconversion reactions between 1,1′-bis(α-hydroxyalkyl)ferrocenes and 7-oxa[3]ferrocenophanes are stereospecific. PMR spectra of the diols and ethers have been examined at 100 MHz in CF₃COOH, and the existence of α-[1′-(α-hydroxyalkyl)ferrocenyl]carbonium ions has been demonstrated in this acid. A mechanism for the various interconversion reactions is proposed on the basis of their stereospecific reactivity and from the PMR spectra of the carbonium ions.     

Frequency-dependent changes in absolute hearing threshold caused by perception of a previous sound

This study investigated effects of a previous sound presentation at the absolute threshold of hearing. Changes in threshold were measured when a pure tone at 60 dB SPL preceded a test tone in the contra- or ipsilateral ear. When the previous and test sounds both had the same frequency of 500 Hz, threshold decreased approximately 2 dB in the contralateral ear, and increased slightly in the ipsilateral ear. On the other hand, when the frequency of the previous sound differed from that of the test sound, the threshold was decreased slightly in the ipsilateral ear.
