Elastic convection in vibrated viscoplastic fluids

We observe a new type of behavior in a shear-thinning yield stress fluid: freestanding convection rolls driven by vertical oscillation. The convection occurs without the constraint of container boundaries, yet the diameter of the rolls is spontaneously selected for a wide range of parameters. The transition to the convecting state occurs without hysteresis when the amplitude of the plate acceleration exceeds a critical value. We find that a nondimensional stress, the stress due to the inertia of the fluid normalized by the yield stress, governs the onset of the convective motion.     

Orbital degrees of freedom and electron correlation in optical absorption of metallic LaSrMnO

The optical absorption in ferromagnetic metal La_1-xSr_xMnO₃ is anomalous; it has a wide-range absorption up to about 1 eV even at zero temperature. Since 3d electrons in La_1-xSr_xMnO₃ partially fill doubly degenerate e_g orbitals, the orbital degrees of freedom are crucial to understand this metallic system. We argue that the interband transition within e_g orbitals is important in the optical absorption. The optical spectrum is modified also by the inter-orbital Coulomb interaction. We have examined perturbatively the effect of the Coulomb interaction on the spectrum. Available experiments are discussed by comparing with the present results. A novel 2-C reactivity studies of 1-aroyl-1,2-dihydro-3H-naphtho[2,1-b]pyran-3-ones

The 2-C, methylene group of 1-aroyl-1,2-dihydro-3H-naphtho[2,1-b]pyran-3-ones (2) have been showed to possess a superior reactivity towards many of organic reagents. The naphthopyrones (2) condensed with aromatic aldehydes to give the 2-arylidine derivatives (3). Bromination of 2 gave 1,2-dibromo (4) or 5-bromo (5) derivatives depending on the reaction conditions. The base catalyzed addition or cycloaddition of naphthopyrones (2) to 4-methoxy benzalacetophenone gave the expected Michael adduct (6) or the cyclic adducts (7–9) depending on the type of catalytic base and reaction conditions. Structures of the products have been established by elemental analyses, IR and ¹H NMR spectroscopic methods.     

Synthesis of 4-o-(N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminyl)-6-o-acyl-N-acetylmuramyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine

Long-chain acyl derivatives of the disaccharide dipeptide, which is a common building unit of bacterial cell walls, were synthesized in order to test their immunostimulating activity.
