Synthesis of ring-oxidized retinoids as substrates of mouse class I alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH1)

Ring-oxidized retinoids have been synthesized stereoselectively using the Stille cross-coupling reaction. Kinetic constants of mouse class I alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH1) with these retinoids were determined.     

Influence of amide linkages on acidity determinations of humic substances Testing with model-mixtures

A set of experiments, using model compounds, was carried out in order to evaluate the influence of amide linkages on acidity measurements of humic substances (HS). Three benzene-carboxylic acids (2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid; 3,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and phthalic acid) and two peptides (dl-alanyl-dl-alanine, and glycil-l-leucine) were employed to simulate the major acidic functional groups present in humic material. The acidity of the samples was measured, using the Schnitzer and Gupta methods, for each compound separately, as well as for selected mixtures with different compound combinations. General results showed that, in the absence of peptides, phenolic groups with high pK_a values are not detected in the barium hydroxide reaction and the data so obtained do not represent the real concentrations of the acidic groups. For the mixtures containing peptides, the presence of amide linkages distorts the results relative to the total acidity (TA) mainly because under the extreme conditions of the reaction with Ba(OH)₂ hydrolysis of the peptide occurs, consuming extra hydroxyl groups and increasing artificially the phenolic content. Such a condition is minimized by the reduction of the reaction time.     

3D MR imaging of dental cavities-an in vitro study

A 3D spin-echo (3D SE) pulse sequence was used on a 4.7 T research MRI system to produce images of extracted human first molar tooth placed in CuSO4 water solution. The maximal resolution achieved was 35 x 63 x 300 microm3 in read and two phase directions, respectively. The high-intensity signal from water in solution together with the lack of signal from mineralized tooth tissue produce very good contrast allowing to visualize topography of outer and inner surfaces of the tooth. The 3D MR data were median filtered, binarized and then divided into separate segments corresponding to the inner tooth cavities and the hard tooth tissue. The topography of the root canals was visualized and the canals volume was calculated. The presented technique may be used for quantitative analysis of the root canal cavities shape and volume. The results of such an analysis may be applied for estimation of the quality of the impressional mapping methods in restorative dentistry or as an alternative non-impressional 3D mapping method.     

ITQ-12: a new microporous silica polymorph potentially useful for light hydrocarbon separations

The new synthetic form of microporous crystalline silica, denoted as ITQ-12, shows a high potential for the separation of propane and propene from its mixtures.     

Composite Julia sets generated by infinite polynomial arrays

A definition of a generalized filled-in Julia set generated by an infinite array of proper polynomial mappings in  is introduced. It is shown that such Julia sets depend analytically on the defining polynomial mappings.     

Asymmetric intermolecular Pauson-Khand reactions of unstrained olefins: the (o-dimethylamino)phenylsulfinyl group as an efficient chiral auxiliary

The first asymmetric version of intermolecular Pauson-Khand reactions of unstrained alkenes is described. Generally simple acyclic alkenes exhibit low reactivity and regioselectivity in intermolecular Pauson-Khand reactions; however, o-(dimethylamino)phenyl vinyl sulfoxide reacts under very mild conditions with a wide variety of terminal alkynes in a completely regioselective and highly stereoselective manner. The utility of the resulting 5-sulfinyl-2-cyclopentenones in asymmetric synthesis is illustrated by a very short enantioselective synthesis of the antibiotic (-)-pentenomycin I.     

Tandem RCM-Pauson-Khand reaction for access to tricycles in one step

Starting from conveniently designed dienynes complexed to cobalt, a tandem RCM-intramolecular Pauson-Khand reaction yields tricyclic compounds. The methodology allows the synthesis of 6,5,5 and 7,5,5 systems.     

Stereodifferentiation of chiral compounds using reversed-phase liquid chromatography coupled with capillary gas chromatography

A method is described for the enantiomeric quantitation of some chiral compounds via online coupling of reversed-phase liquid chromatography-gas chromatography. The evaluation of some variables affecting the experimentation (i.e., the packing material used in the interface, volume of the transferred fraction, desorption time, initial temperature of the interface, and purge time) makes it possible to optimize the recoveries obtained for some chiral terpenes and lactones using a capillary column of beta-cyclodextrin dissolved in OV-1701. The proposed method allows the enantiomeric analysis of aqueous matrices obtaining relative standard deviations lower than 9% and detection limits ranging from 0.26-0.93 ppm for the investigated compounds.
