Search for Lorentz and CPT violation effects in Muon spin precession

The spin precession frequency of muons stored in the (g-2) storage ring has been analyzed for evidence of Lorentz and CPT violation. Two Lorentz and CPT violation signatures were searched for a nonzero delta omega a(=omega a mu+ - omega a mu-) and a sidereal variation of omega a mu+/-). No significant effect is found, and the following limits on the standard-model extension parameters are obtained: bZ = -(1.0+/-1.1) x 10(-23) GeV; (m mu dZ0 + HXY)=(1.8+/-6.0) x 10(-23) GeV; and the 95% confidence level limits b perpendicular mu+ <1.4 x 10(-24) GeV and b perpendicular mu- <2.6 x 10(-24) GeV.     

Effect of an electric field on the limits of liquid stability

When electric fields are applied to metastable liquids, the energy barrier for nucleation of the vapor phase will increase. Reported observations of field-induced nucleation should not be used to infer stability limits of bulk liquids.

Novel Prenylated Xanthones from Garcinia gerrardii HARVEY

Three novel prenylated xanthones, 1–3 , have been isolated from the root bark of Garcinia gerrardii HARVEY ex T. R. SIM (G. natalensis SCHLECHTER ; G. transvaalensis BURTT DAVY ; Guttiferae). Structure elucidation was achieved by a combination of one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopic techniques, including long-range HETCOR, mass spectroscopy, and chemical methods. Garcigerrin A ( 1 ) and B ( 2 ) are pyrano derivatives of 3 . They all show a rare 1,4,5 oxygenation pattern of the xanthone nucleus. Xanthone 3 is fungicidal against Cladosporium cucumerinum.     

The anti-inflammatory activity of metal complexes and salts of amine carboxyboranes

The metal complexes and salts of amine carboxyboranes were shown to be potent anti-inflammatory agents in rodents at 8 mg kg^?1. They were effective in blocking induced edema, pleurisy and endotoxic shock while blocking both local and central pain processes. The ability of the agents to function as anti-inflammatory agents is multi-fold. First, lysosomal enzymes of specific cells, e.g. macrophages, were inhibited with IC₅₀ values in the range of 10^?6 M . Collagenase I and II activities were inhibited with IC₅₀ values approximately equal to 10^?4 M . The anti-inflammatory activity of these agents at the molecular levels appears to be due to inhibition of the release of TNFα and Il-1 from macrophages which indirectly control chemotaxic migration of white blood cells as indicated by the suppression of PMN and macrophage invasion into sponges implanted subcutaneously (SC) in mice. Furthermore, in these invading cells, the agents' blockage of TNFα and Il-1 or Il-2 release down-regulates prostaglandin and leukotriene enzymatic synthetic rates and, consequently, their release, resulting in a reduction of the inflammation process.
