The enhancement effect is consistently shown when simultaneously masked stimuli are preceded by the masker alone, with a reduction in the amount of masking relative to when that precursor is absent. One explanation for this effect proposed by Viemeister and Bacon [(1982). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 71, 1502-1507] is the adaptation of inhibition, which predicts that an enhanced component (the "target") will be effectively more intense within the auditory system than one that has not been enhanced. Forward masking studies have indicated this effect of increased gain; however, other explanations of the enhancement effect have also been suggested. In order to provide an alternative measure of the amount of effective gain for an enhanced target, a subjective binaural centering task was used in which listeners matched the intensities of enhanced and unenhanced 2-kHz tones presented to opposite ears to produce a centered stimulus. The results showed that the enhancement effect produces an effective 4-5 dB increase in the level of the enhanced target. The enhancement effect was also measured using other enhancement paradigms which yielded similar results over a range of levels for the target, supporting an account based on adaptation of inhibition.  相似文献

Highly detectable, time-reversed triangular amplitude modulation, with linear increases and decreases in amplitude, was used in an adaptive task to measure just-noticeable differences for changes in the direction of envelope temporal asymmetry for different modulation depths (m = 1.0 and 0.5) and rates (8, 16, and 32 Hz). Thresholds were analyzed using three different measures of the modulator's shape based on (1) the change in the position of the peak within a cycle, (2) the change in the slope of the modulator's increasing amplitude portion, and (3) the change in slope measured in units of amplitude per unit cycle rather than amplitude per unit time. The amplitude per unit cycle measure resulted in the best fit to all the data, and predicted additional data that were gathered with roved modulation frequency. The results suggest that a time normalization process may be involved in the perception and discrimination of envelope shape.  相似文献

We use a recently developed self-consistent GW approximation to present systematic ab initio calculations of the conduction band spin splitting in III-V and II-VI zinc blende semiconductors. The spin-orbit interaction is taken into account as a perturbation to the scalar relativistic Hamiltonian. These are the first calculations of conduction band spin splittings based on a quasiparticle approach; and because the self-consistent GW scheme accurately reproduces the relevant band parameters, it is expected to be a reliable predictor of spin splittings. The results are compared to the few available experimental data and a previous calculation based on a model one-particle potential. We also briefly address the widely used k x p parametrization in the context of these results.  相似文献

Synchrotron footprinting is a valuable technique in structural biology for understanding macromolecular solution‐state structure and dynamics of proteins and nucleic acids. Although an extremely powerful tool, there is currently only a single facility in the USA, the X28C beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), dedicated to providing infrastructure, technology development and support for these studies. The high flux density of the focused white beam and variety of specialized exposure environments available at X28C enables footprinting of highly complex biological systems; however, it is likely that a significant fraction of interesting experiments could be performed at unspecialized facilities. In an effort to investigate the viability of a beamline‐flexible footprinting program, a standard sample was taken on tour around the nation to be exposed at several US synchrotrons. This work describes how a relatively simple and transportable apparatus can allow beamlines at the NSLS, CHESS, APS and ALS to be used for synchrotron footprinting in a general user mode that can provide useful results.  相似文献

A heterodyne interference microscope arrangement for full-field imaging is described. The reference and object beams are formed with highly correlated, time-varying laser speckle patterns. The speckle illumination confers a confocal transfer function to the system, and by temporal averaging, the coherence noise that often degrades coherent full-field microscope images is suppressed. The microscope described is similar to a Linnik-type microscope and allows the use of high-numerical-aperture objective lenses, but the temporal coherence of the illumination permits the use of a low-power achromatic doublet in the reference arm. The use of a doublet simplifies alignment of the microscope and can reduce the cost. Preliminary results are presented that demonstrate full-field surface height precision of 1 nm rms.  相似文献

The fluorescence lifetime strongly depends on the immediate environment of the fluorophore. Time-resolved fluorescence measurements of the enhanced forms of ECFP and EYFP in water–glycerol mixtures were performed to quantify the effects of the refractive index and viscosity on the fluorescence lifetimes of these proteins. The experimental data show for ECFP and EYFP two fluorescence lifetime components: one short lifetime of about 1 ns and a longer lifetime of about 3.7 ns of ECFP and for EYFP 3.4. The fluorescence of ECFP is very heterogeneous, which can be explained by the presence of two populations: a conformation (67% present) where the fluorophore is less quenched than in the other conformation (33% present). The fluorescence decay of EYFP is much more homogeneous and the amplitude of the short fluorescence lifetime is about 5%. The fluorescence anisotropy decays show that the rotational correlation time of both proteins scales with increasing viscosity of the solvent similarly as shown earlier for GFP. The rotational correlation times are identical for ECFP and EYFP, which can be expected since both proteins have the same shape and size. The only difference observed is the slightly lower initial anisotropy for ECFP as compared to the one of EYFP.  相似文献

Importance sampling Monte Carlo offers powerful approaches to approximating Bayesian updating in sequential problems. Specific classes of such approaches are known as particle filters. These procedures rely on the simulation of samples or ensembles of the unknown quantities and the calculation of associated weights for the ensemble members. As time evolves and/or when applied in high-dimensional settings, such as those of interest in many data assimilation problems, these weights typically display undesirable features. The key difficulty involves a collapse toward approximate distributions concentrating virtually all of their probability on an implausibly few ensemble members.

After reviewing ensembling, Monte Carlo, importance sampling and particle filters, we present some approximations intended to moderate the problem of collapsing weights. The motivations for these suggestions are combinations of (i) the idea that key dynamical behavior in many systems actually takes place on a low dimensional manifold, and (ii) notions of statistical dimension reduction. We illustrate our suggestions in a problem of inference for ocean surface winds and atmospheric pressure. Real observational data are used.  相似文献

Reflections from geometric discontinuities can be used with ultrasonic energy to predict the temperature of an interface where classical temperature measurement techniques are impractical because of physical access limitations or harsh environmental conditions. Additionally, these same ultrasonic measurements can be used with inversion methods commonly applied to ill-posed heat transfer problems to increase the accuracy of the measurement of surface temperature or heat flux at the surface of interest. Both methods for determining surface temperature are presented, along with a comparison of results both from a verification example and using data gathered in a field test of the methods. The results obtained with these two methods are shown to be in good agreement with an empirical relationship used in the design of large caliber guns.  相似文献

The coupled-channel optical method (CCOM) is implemented in this work to study the scattering of electron on rubidium atom at 20 eV. In order to provide a realistic calculation, the continuum effect of the scattering system is accounted by incorporate an ab initio optical potential into the CCOM calculation. The differential cross sections (DCS), as well as the reduced Stokes parameters of 5p excitation are reported and compared to the available experimental and theoretical data.  相似文献
