The Cr 2p and O 1s binding energy (BE) levels have been calculated by first principles methods for different models of hydroxylated (0001)-Cr2O3 surfaces. Several surface terminations have been considered. The calculations allow us to reproduce the O 1s shifts between O in oxide and OH groups. It is found that two main effects account for the OH binding energy shifts. On the one hand, the increased covalency of the O–H bond with respect to the Cr–O bond, lowers the electronic O (1s and 2p) energy, and in consequence the BE of the core levels (O 1s) are higher. On the other hand, the lower the OH coordination number, the higher the valence and core levels energy, and the lower the BE. Consequently, mono-coordinated hydroxyls have a binding energy near that of O2? in the oxide (ΔBEOH–O = ? 0.2–0.0 eV). Two-fold coordinated hydroxyls have a slightly higher BE (ΔBEOH–O = + 0.3 eV). Three-fold coordinated OH groups have a higher binding energy (ΔBEOH–O = + 0.6?0.7 eV), corresponding to that experimentally measured for OH groups. Finally, water adsorbed above OH groups exhibits a still higher BE (ΔBEHOH–O = + 0.9–1.0 eV). The reactivity of the (0 0 0 1)-Cr–Cr2O3 surface towards water was studied by means of periodic DFT + U. Several water coverages were studied, from 1.2H2O/nm2 to 14.1H2O/nm2, corresponding to ¼, 1, 2 and 3 water/Cr at the (0 0 0 1)-Cr2O3 surface, respectively. With increasing coverage, water gradually completes the coordination sphere of the surface Cr atoms from 3 (dry surface) to 4 (1.2 and 4.7H2O/nm2), 5 (9.4H2O/nm2) and 6 (14.1H2O/nm2). For all studied coverages, water replaces an O atom from the missing above plane. At coverages 1.2 and 4.7H2O/nm2, the Cr–Os (surface oxygen) acid–base character and bond directionality govern the water adsorption. The adsorption is molecular at the lowest coverage. At 4.7H2O/nm2, molecular and dissociative states are isoenergetic. The activation energy barrier between the two states being as low as 12 kJ/mol, allowing protons exchanges between the OH groups, as evidenced by ab inito molecular dynamics at room temperature. At coverages of 9.4 and 14.1H2O/nm2, 1D- (respectively, 2D-) water networks are formed. The resulting surface terminations are –Cr(OH)2 and –Cr(OH)3– like, respectively. The increased stability of those terminations as compared to the previous ones are due to the stabilization of the adsorbed phase through a H-bond network and to the increase in the Cr coordination number, stabilizing the Cr (t2g) orbitals in the valence band. An atomistic thermodynamic approach allows us to specify the temperature and water pressure domains of prevalence for each surface termination. It is found that the –Cr(OH)3-like, –Cr(OH)2 and anhydrous surfaces may be stabilized depending on (T, P) conditions. Calculated energies of adsorption and OH frequencies are in good agreement with published experimental data and support the full hydroxylation model, where the Cr achieves a 6-fold coordination, at saturation. 相似文献

We demonstrate that a broadband coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) spectrum generated with a typical two-pulse scheme contains two distinct, significant signals: '2-color' CARS, where the pump and probe are provided by a narrowband pulse and the continuum pulse constitutes the Stokes light, and '3-color' CARS, where the pump and Stokes are provided by two different frequency components in the continuum pulse and the narrowband pulse serves as the probe. The CARS spectra from the two different mechanisms show distinct characteristics in Raman shift range, laser power dependence, and chirping dependence. We discuss the potential for a 3-color CARS signal to cover the fingerprint region with reduced photodamage of live cells. Several surface analysis techniques were combined to study the initial stages of oxidation of Cu(1 1 1) surfaces exposed to O2 at low pressure (<5 × 10−6 mbar) and room temperature. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) results show that the reactivity is governed by the restructuring of the Cu(1 1 1) surface. On the terraces, oxygen dissociative adsorption leads to the formation of isolated O adatoms and clusters weakly bound to the surface. The O adatoms are located in the fcc threefold hollow sites of the unrestructured terraces. Friedel oscillations with an amplitude lower than 5 pm have been measured around the adatoms. At step edges, surface restructuring is initiated and leads to the nucleation and growth of a two-dimensional disordered layer of oxide precursor. The electronic structure of this oxide layer is characterised by a band gap measured by scanning tunneling spectroscopy to be ∼1.5 eV wide. The growth of the oxide islands progresses by consumption of the upper metal terraces to form triangular indents. The extraction of the Cu atoms at this interface generates a preferential orientation of the interface along the close-packed directions of the metal. A second growth front corresponds to the step edges of the oxide islands and progresses above the lower metal terraces. This is where the excess Cu atoms extracted at the first growth front are incorporated. STM shows that the growing disordered oxide layer consists of units of hexagonal structure with a first nearest neighbour distance characteristic of a relaxed Cu-Cu distance (∼0.3 nm), consistent with local Cu2O(1 1 1)-like elements. Exposure at 300 °C is necessary to form an ordered two-dimensional layer of oxide precursor. A variable depth step implementation of the range-dependent acoustic model (RAM) is applied to the modeling of forward scattering from a rough sea surface. The sea surface is treated within RAM simply as an internal interface between a water layer and an air upper halfspace. A comparison with a numerically exact integral equation is undertaken for the scattering of single frequencies from Pierson-Moskowitz sea surfaces. The method is extended to model the variability of linear frequency modulated pulses from a series of frozen sea surfaces in a shallow water waveguide. Besides the usual conductance plateaus at multiples of 2e(2)/h, quantum point contacts typically show an extra plateau at approximately 0.7(2e(2)/h), believed to arise from electron-electron interactions that prohibit the two spin channels from being simultaneously occupied. We present evidence that the disappearance of the 0.7 structure at very low temperature signals the formation of a Kondo-like correlated spin state. The emission pattern in the v(perp)-v(par) plane of intermediate mass fragments with Z = 3--7 (IMF) has been studied in the collision 116Sn+ 93Nb at 29.5A MeV as a function of the total kinetic energy loss of the reaction. This pattern shows that for peripheral reactions most IMF's are emitted at velocities intermediate between those of the projectile- and target-like products. The periodic modes of a voltage-driven resonant small-junction Josephson circuit are studied by accurate numerical methods starting from large dissipation. As dissipation decreases, sections of the average current vs. voltage characteristic become unstable and new branches develop on those sections, corresponding to new modes which are exact subharmonics of the old mode. For low enough dissipation chaotic ranges of voltage occur, i.e., ranges with no stable periodic modes. This circuit is a component of many experimental circuits, e.g., finite junctions, DC and RF squids, etc., and so the behavior found here should occur widely. 相似文献
