Total harmonic distortion analysis for direct methanol fuel cell anode

In this study, total harmonic distortion (THD) analysis is put forward to illustrate nonlinear behavior of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) anode. THD simulations by means of different methanol oxidation kinetics as well as its experimental validation are both carried out. It is shown that the THD model adopting a three-step methanol oxidation mechanism with Kauranen–Frumkin/Temkin kinetics can be used to illustrate the THD variation for DMFC anode qualitatively. The experimental THD response at the frequency range from 0.063 Hz to 0.4 Hz is identified as the reflection of the nonlinearity variation of those kinetic steps involving intermediates in the methanol oxidation. In such a frequency domain, THD value decrease monotonously with decreasing methanol concentration, which notices its accessibility on methanol concentration detection.     

A MEMS micromirror driven by electrostatic force

A microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) micromirror is demonstrated in this paper. The micromirror is actuated by an electrostatic force and can achieve a large out of plane stroke by eliminating the electrostatic pull-in effect. The micromirror consists of a mirror of 400 μm by 400 μm in the center, a spring and three fixed bottom electrodes each side. Design principles and the analytical model are both developed, and they are verified by finite element analysis (FEA). The resonant frequency for the piston movement of the designed micromirror is about 2.5 kHz by FEA simulation. The micromirror prototype has been fabricated by a surface micromachining process and it is successfully tested using a microsystem analyzer. An out of plane stroke of 1.65 μm is observed at 100 V and it agrees well with the predicted result from analytical model.     

Synthesis,Crystal Structure and Magnetic Behaviour of {[Co(dimb)2(H2O)2]·(NO3)2·(H2O)2}n

The title complex {[Co(dimb)₂(H₂O)₂]·(NO₃)₂·(H₂O)₂}_n ( 1 ) (dimb = 1,3‐di(imidazol‐1‐ylmethyl)‐5‐methylbenzene) has been hydrothermally synthesized by the reaction of dimb with Co(NO₃)₂·6H₂O in aqueous solution. The cobalt(II) atoms are linked by bridging dimb ligands to form 2D corrugated and wavy networks containing Co₄(dimb)₄ macrocyclic motifs. Two neighboring independent layers interlinked each other in a parallel fashion to construct three‐dimensional structure by O–H···O, N–H···O and C–H···O hydrogen bonds. Magnetic measurement shows the weak antiferromagnetic interaction with a one‐dimensional chain model in the range of 5–300 K, with J of –0.68 cm⁻¹.     

A volume-amending method to improve mass conservation of level set approach for incompressible two-phase flows

A volume-amending method is developed both to keep the level set function as an algebraic distance function and to preserve the bubble mass in a level set approach for incompressible two-phase flows with the significantly deformed free interface. After the traditional reinitialization procedure, a vol-ume-amending method is added for correcting the position of the interface according to mass loss/gain error until the mass error falls in the allowable range designated in advance. The level set approach with this volume-amending method incorporated has been validated by three test cases: the motion of a single axisymmetrical bubble or drop in liquid, the motion of a two-dimensional water drop falling through the air into a water pool, and the interactional motion of two buoyancy-driven three- dimensional deformable bubbles. The computational results with this volume-amending method in-corporated are in good agreement with the reported experimental data and the mass is well preserved in all cases.

Novel solutions to the combined dispersion equation

In this Letter, the combined dispersion equation was solved by the sub-equation method. It is shown that the combined dispersion equation with the special parameters can be solved and many novel solutions will derived in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions, where some known solutions will be recovered when the modulus arrives its limiting value.
