Ending Laminations and Cannon–Thurston Maps

In earlier work, we had shown that Cannon–Thurston maps exist for Kleinian surface groups without accidental parabolics. In this paper we prove that pre-images of points are precisely end-points of leaves of the ending lamination whenever the Cannon–Thurston map is not one-to-one.

We say that the width of an infinite subgroup in is if there exists a collection of essentially distinct conjugates of such that the intersection of any two elements of the collection is infinite and is maximal possible. We define the width of a finite subgroup to be . We prove that a quasiconvex subgroup of a negatively curved group has finite width. It follows that geometrically finite surfaces in closed hyperbolic -manifolds satisfy the -plane property for some .

     

Determination of lead and cadmium in sediment slurries by ETA-AAS: A comparison of methods for the preparation and analysis of sediment slurries

Comparisons were made of various methods for the homogenization of sediment slurries for the determination of Pb and Cd by ETA-AAS. Homogenization techniques evaluated included the use of impact bead, propeller and foamless generators, vortexing and ultrasonic homogenization. On the basis of precision and accuracy, speed and ease of operation; the ultrasonic homogenization technique was clearly the method of choice. Precision obtained for this method using both reduced PdCl₂ modifier and the L'vov platform approaches what is obtained for aqueous solutions. Accuracy for Pb and Cd was excellent using both slurry and aqueous calibration standards with slurry standards being somewhat superior for Cd.

Effects of adsorbates on electron spin polarization in low energy electron diffraction from tungsten (001): II. Ordered CO overlayer

Electron spin polarization and intensity profiles have been measured in low electron diffraction (LEED) for the (00) beam at θ = 13° and ø = 0° from a W(001) surface exposed to CO and annealed to obtain an ordered c(2 × 2) CO overlayer. The annealed surface with additional CO adsorbed was also studied. The polarization was found to be sensitive to the surface condition and the very distinct P?V profile corresponding to the c(2 × 2) overlayer is believed to be a very sensitive indicator of CO in the β₃ phase. The properties of the annealed surface exposed to further CO suggest the use of this surface as a low energy electron spin polarization analyzer.
