The cross-correlation between surface temperature and subsurface velocity is presented for water undergoing evaporative convection. The surface temperature measurements were obtained via quantitative infrared imaging, and the velocity measurements were obtained using a two-component laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) system. The water surface was covered with a surfactant monolayer, which did not impede evaporation. The largest measured correlation coefficient was 0.375. Correlation coefficients obtained after shifting the velocity and temperature time traces with respect to each other revealed a peak in the correlation coefficient very close to a zero time shift. The significance of these results and their implications for the remote sensing of underwater objects via infrared imaging are discussed. Received: 2 April 2001/Accepted: 30 November 2001  相似文献

Measurements in grid turbulence with a three-component hot-wire vorticity probe are compared with results obtained from a direct numerical simulation of decaying homogeneous turbulence at a similar Reynolds number. There is adequate agreement for both spectra and probability density functions of all three vorticity fluctuations. This supports the treatment of the measured data, in particular the corrections that need to be applied for the finite spatial resolution of the probe. The comparison does, however, highlight some inaccuracies in the way the instantaneous dissipation rate fluctuations were obtained experimentally.  相似文献

This paper analyses steady two-dimensional mixed convection of an imcompressible viscous fluid in a porous medium past a hot vertical plate. Assuming Darcy-Brinkman model for the flow in a porous medium, the boundary layer equations are integrated numerically to obtain the non-similar solution for the velocity and temperature distribution for several values of the permeability and viscous dissipation parameters. It is shown that for a fixed value of Prandtl number Pr and dissipation parameter E, the skin-friction at the plate decreases with increase in the permeability parameter K1. However for the same value or Pr and E, the heat transfer rate at the plate increases with increasing K1. The dimensionlcss velocity and temperature functions in the flow are plotted for several values of E and K1 with Pr = 0.73. It is also shown that for fixed values of K1, and KPr, the skin-friction increases with increase in the dissipation parameter E.  相似文献

The ascent of a dusty turbulent thermal in a nonuniform compressible atmosphere is numerically investigated. The dispersed phase is described in the one-velocity and one-temperature approximation. A comparative calculation of the entrainment of active and passive impurities into the stratosphere is made, the vertical aerosol density distribution in the hanging cloud is obtained, and the maximum amount of active impurity that can be carried beyond the tropopause by a thermal of given energy is determined. In this paper we study the boundary layer equations for steady laminar flow past a heated horizontal plate embedded in a saturated porous medium by adopting the formulation of Chandrasekhara [3], Kolar and Sastri [7]. The velocity distribution and temperature distribution are determined by using the implicit Crank-Nicolson-Predictor-Corrector method of finite difference scheme [7] and [1]. With the help of a compute the distributions are estimated at both (i+1/2)th and (i+1)th levels and they are presented in tabular form. The curves for these distributions are plotted. We calculate the shear stress and skin friction at the wall and observe that the skin-friction directly depends upon the dimensions of the plate and inversely depends upon the Reynolds numberRe. The heat flux and the Nusselt number are evaluated. Further we observe that the Nusselt number depends upon the length of the porous plate.

Zusammenfassung Diese Untersuchung befaßt sich mit den Grenzschichtgleichungen für eine stetige laminare Strömung über eine beheizte Platte, die in ein gesättigtes poröses Medium eingebettet ist, mittels des Formalismus von Chandrasekhara [3], Kolar und Sastri [7]. Die Geschwindigkeits- und Temperaturverteilung wurden unter Benutzung der impliziten Crank-Nicolson-Korrekturmethode des Finiten-Elemente-Schemas bestimmt. Die (i+1/2). und die (i+1). Ebene der Verteilungen wurden mit Computer-Hilfe berechnet und in Tabellenform dargestellt. Die Graphen der Temperatur- und Geschwindigkeitsverteilung wurden ausgeplottet. Die Schubspannungen und die Oberflächenreibung an der Wand wurden berechnet und es konnte festgestellt werden, daß die Oberflächenreibung direkt von der Größe der Platte abhängt und umgekehrt proportional der Reynolds-ZahlRe ist. Der Wärmestrom und die Nusselt-Zahl wurden bestimmt. Weiterhin konnte festgestellt werden, daß die Nusselt-Zahl von der Länge der porösen Platte abhängt.

Acoustic resonances are generated by air moving past a plate with a semi-circular leading edge located in a duct. The sound stimulates the small separation bubble near the leading edge to shed vortices into the boundary layer at the sound frequency. The acoustic energy required to sustain the resonances is generated as these vortices pass the trailing edge of the plate.  相似文献

The properties are studied of the propagation of unsteady shock waves in a gas-liquid system of bubble structure in the case when the volume concentration of the gas changes in the direction of motion of the shock wave. It is established that when there is a sufficiently rapid drop in the gas content, an effect of amplification of the shock wave is observed which is due to the deceleration of the medium behind the shock wave. A study is made of the laws of the evolution of long- and short-wave pulsed perturbations in such systems. The authors consider processes of reflection of waves from obstacles and their passage from a gas into a bubble liquid, from a two-phase mixture into a pure liquid. In the present work we have obtained the numerical solution of the momentum equation for a Yield-Pseudoplastic power-law fluid flowing in the entrance region of a tube. The accuracy of the numerical results is checked by comparing the asymptotic values of friction coefficients and velocity profiles with the corresponding results from the analytical solutions for the fully-developed region. The results of the entrance flow solution for the power-law exponent equal to unity (Bingham fluid) are also in agreement with the numerical solution for a Bingham fluid. Detailed results are presented for wide ranges of yield numbers and power law exponents.

Two-level cumulative-damage fatigue tests were conducted on tubular 304 stainless-steel specimen under biaxial-strain conditions at elevated temperatures. Effects of temperature, biaxiality and sequence of straining were investigated. The experimental results are forwarted with a new approach that utilizes the Miner cumulative-damage rule. This approach has shown that fatigue damage at elevated temperatures of 538°C (1000°F) and 649°C (1200°F) accelerates and decelerates as a result of time of exposure to a given loading sequence. The effect of biaxiality is shown through the behavior of the material under axial and shear-strain components. The axial (tensile) strain component has shown to be the severest detrimental damaging component when compared to a shear-strain component. A damage mechanism emerges from the interaction of temperature and loading sequence. Its significance can be observed only when a certain life ratio has been exhausted.  相似文献

The authors have evaluated the performance of three types of metal-foil strain gages for two and a half years at a constant temperature of 75°C in air. The studies included polyimide-backed and phenolic-glass-backed gages with copper-nickel foil (constantan) and glass-fiber-rein-forced epoxy-phenolic-resin-backed gages with nickel-chromium foil (modified Karma). All gages were tested in a three-wire-lead, single-active-gage Wheatstone bridge system at nominal mechanical-strain levels of 0, +1000 and ?1000 μm/m. The polyimide-backed constantan gages used in Installation No. 1 typically zero-shifted more than +200 μm/m after 30 days' testing at 75°C. The phenolic-glass-backed constantan gages used in Installation No. 2 zero-shifted ?40 to +20 μm/m after 30 days and +270 to +350 μm/m after 900 days. The glass-fiber-reinforced, epoxyphenolic-resin-backed Karma gages used in Installation No. 3 zero-shifted about +5 μm/m after 30 days, and +20 to +45 μm/m after 900 days. The Karma gages used in Installation No. 3 performed better than the other two types of gages. The measured results for the Karma gages appeared to be independent of the adhesives, test-part material, and mechanical-strain levels that we tested. The high stability and low zero drifts of this gage at 75°C allowed us to reliably correct the measured static-strain data on actual test parts.  相似文献
