New ligands for the Fe(III)‐mediated reverse atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate

A series of (di)picolinic acids and their derivates are investigated as novel complexing tridentate or bidentate ligands in the iron‐mediated reverse atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate in N,N‐dimethylformamide at 100 °C with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyrontrile as an initiator. The polymerization rates and polydispersity indices (1.32–1.8) of the resulting polymers are dependent on the structures of the ligands employed. Different iron complexes may be involved in iron‐mediated reverse atom transfer radical polymerization, depending on the type of acid used. ¹H NMR spectroscopy has been used to study the structure of the resulting polymers. Nanostructured thermoset epoxy resin templated by an amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly(dimethylsiloxane) diblock copolymer

An amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PEO–PDMS) diblock copolymer was used to template a bisphenol A type epoxy resin (ER); nanostructured thermoset blends of ER and PEO–PDMS were prepared with 4,4′‐methylenedianiline (MDA) as the curing agent. The phase behavior, crystallization, hydrogen‐bonding interactions, and nanoscale structures were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and small‐angle X‐ray scattering. The uncured ER was miscible with the poly(ethylene oxide) block of PEO–PDMS, and the uncured blends were not macroscopically phase‐separated. Macroscopic phase separation took place in the MDA‐cured ER/PEO–PDMS blends containing 60–80 wt % PEO–PDMS diblock copolymer. However, the composition‐dependent nanostructures were formed in the cured blends with 10–50 wt % PEO–PDMS, which did not show macroscopic phase separation. The poly(dimethylsiloxane) microdomains with sizes of 10–20 nm were dispersed in a continuous ER‐rich phase; the average distance between the neighboring microdomains was in the range of 20–50 nm. The miscibility between the cured ER and the poly(ethylene oxide) block of PEO–PDMS was ascribed to the favorable hydrogen‐bonding interaction. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Structures and stability of Al<Subscript><Emphasis Type="Bold">7</Emphasis></Subscript>C and Al<Subscript><Emphasis Type="Bold">7</Emphasis></Subscript>N clusters

We report results of the atomic and electronic structures of Al₇C cluster using ab initio molecular dynamics with ultrasoft pseudopotentials and generalized gradient approximation. The lowest energy structure is found to be the one in which carbon atom occupies an interstitial position in Al₇ cluster. The electronic structure shows that the recent observation [Chem. Phys. Lett. 316, 31 (2000)] of magic behavior of Al₇C^- cluster is due to a large highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) gap which makes Al₇C^- chemically inert. These results have further led us to the finding of a new neutral magic cluster Al₇N which has the same number of valence electrons as in Al₇C^- and a large HOMO-LUMO gap of 1.99 eV. Further, calculations have been carried out on (Al₇N)₂ to study interaction between magic clusters. Received 28 July 2001     

Theoretical Research on a Kind of Quantum Left-handed Metamaterial

Recently, research on left-handed materials （LHMs） has attracted considerable attentions. The LHMs are a kind of metameterial which have negative permittivity and negative permeability, which lead to negative refractive index in a frequency range. The LHMs that have been available so far are in the microwave range and are usually composed of classical particles, such as split-ring resonators. Some quantum phenomena such as spontaneous emission of atoms in the LHMs which are considered to be ＇classical background＇ have also been investigated. Many potential applications of LHMs have been proposed, such as superlenses which, in principle, can achieve arbitrary subwavelength resolution.     

The instability degree in the diemnsion of spaces of bivariate spline

In this paper, the dimension of the spaces of bivariate spline with degree less that 2r and smoothness order r on the Morgan-Scott triangulation is considered. The concept of the instability degree in the dimension of spaces of bivariate spline is presented. The results in the paper make us conjecture the instability degree in the dimension of spaces of bivariate spline is infinity.

A FUNDAMENTAL SOLUTION FOR THE LAPLACE OPERATOR ON THE QUATERNIONIC HEISENBERG GROUP

In this paper, the author studies the Laplace operator on the quaternionic Heisenberg group, construct a fundamental solution for it and use this solution to prove the Lp-boundedness and the weak (1-1) boundedness of certain singular convolution operators on the quaternionic Heisenberg group.     

Solitary waves and their bifurcations of KdV like equation with higher order nonlinearity

We investigate the KdV like equation with higher order nonlinearity ut + a(1 +bun)unux + uxxx = 0with n ≥ 1, a, b ∈ R and α≠ 0. The bifurcations and explicit expressions of solitary wave solutions for theequation are discussed by using the bifurcation method and qualitative theory of dynamical systems. Thebifurcation diagrams, existence and number of the solitary waves are given.     

Can Millimeter Waves Generate Electroporation?

Analysis of the field distributions in a single biological cell under electromagnetic wave is given. With Debye approximation, the dielectric relaxation of each part of the cell, including the extracellular and cellular media, the cell membrane and the nuclear membrane, was taken into account. Making use of some typical parameters for a cell, the voltage across nuclear and cytoplasma membranes under electromagnetic waves are calculated up to millimeter wave frequency range. The calculated result indicates that it is unlikely to generate electroporation by present available millimeter wave sources.
