We show, using extensive molecular dynamics simulations, that the dynamics of the electric double layer (EDL) is very much dependent on the wettability of the charged surface on which the EDL develops. For a wetting surface, the dynamics, characterized by the so-called zeta potential, is mainly controlled by the electric properties of the surface, and our work provides a clear interpretation for the traditionally introduced immobile Stern layer. In contrast, the immobile layer disappears for nonwetting surfaces, and the zeta potential deduced from electrokinetic effects is considerably amplified by the existence of a slippage at the solid substrate.  相似文献

We describe a spontaneous symmetry-breaking phenomenon between the intensities of the ordinary and extraordinary components of the fundamental field in intracavity type II harmonic generation. It is based on a triply resonant cavity containing a type II chi(2) crystal pumped at fundamental frequency omega0. The pump beam generates a second-harmonic mode at frequency 2omega0 that acts as a pump for frequency-degenerate type II parametric downconversion. Under operating conditions symmetric with respect to the ordinary and extraordinary components of the fundamental wave, we show a breaking of the symmetry of the intensities of these two waves.  相似文献

The strong electromagnetic coupling between surface plasmon polariton modes on opposite interfaces of a finite thickness periodically nanostructured metal film has been studied. Surface polariton dispersion and associated electromagnetic field distributions have been analyzed. It was shown that at a frequency that corresponds to the crossing of film Bloch modes of different symmetries, the radiative losses of surface polaritons that are related to the polaritons' coupling to light during propagation on the structured surface are suppressed.  相似文献

We report the operation of a 50 mW continuous-wave quantum cascade laser (QCL) in the 9.2 microm range, phase locked to a single-mode CO(2) laser with a tunable frequency offset. The wide free-running emission spectrum of the QCL (3-5 MHz) is strongly narrowed down to the kilohertz range, making it suitable for high-resolution molecular spectroscopy.  相似文献

Background  

To reach and grasp an object in space on the basis of its image cast on the retina requires different coordinate transformations that take into account gaze and limb positioning. Eye position in the orbit influences the image's conversion from retinotopic (eye-centered) coordinates to an egocentric frame necessary for guiding action. Neuroimaging studies have revealed eye position-dependent activity in extrastriate visual, parietal and frontal areas that is along the visuo-motor pathway. At the earliest vision stage, the role of the primary visual area (V1) in this process remains unclear. We used an experimental design based on pattern-onset visual evoked potentials (VEP) recordings to study the effect of eye position on V1 activity in humans.  相似文献

We study the 2D motion of independent point particles colliding with a periodic array of circular obstacles. The interaction between the particles and the obstacles is described by a total accommodation reflection law. Assuming that the array of scatterers has finite horizon, the density of particles is approximated by the solution of a diffusion equation in the long-time and large-scale regime. The proof relies on a multiscale asymptotics and gives the order of approximation.  相似文献

We investigate steady granular surface flows in a rotating drum and demonstrate the existence of rigid clusters of grains embedded in the flowing layer. These clusters appear to be fractal and their size is power law distributed from the grain size scale up to the thickness of the flowing layer. The implications of the absence of a characteristic length scale on available theoretical models of dense granular flows are discussed. Finally, we suggest a possible explanation of the difference between velocity profiles observed in surface flows and in flows down a rough inclined plane.  相似文献

New near-infrared luminescent, monoclinic CaAl2O4:Er3+ phosphor was prepared by using the combustion route at furnace temperatures as low as 500 °C in a few minutes. Combustion synthesized phosphor has been well characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive analysis of X-ray (EDAX) mapping studies. The luminescence spectra of Er3+-doped calcium aluminate were studied at UV (380 nm), vis (488 nm) and IR (980 nm) excitation. Upon UV and vis excitation, the CaAl2O4:Er3+ phosphor exhibits emission bands at ~523 nm and at ~547 nm, corresponding to transitions from the 2H11/2 and 4S3/2 erbium levels to the 4I15/2 ground state. A strong luminescence at 1.55 μm in the infrared (IR) region due to 4I13/24I15/2 transition has been observed in CaAl2O4:Er3+ phosphor upon 980 nm CW pumping. In the spectrum of IR-excited up-conversion luminescence, green (~523 and ~547 nm) and red (662 nm) luminescence bands were present, the latter associated with the 4F9/24I15/2 transitions of Er3+ ions. Both excited state absorption and energy transfer may be proposed as processes responsible for the population of the 4S3/2 and 4F9/2 erbium levels upon IR excitation. The mechanisms responsible for the up-conversion luminescence are discussed.  相似文献
