The asymmetric syntheses of the C-1 sidechains of zaragozic acid A and zaragozic acid C

The asymmetric syntheses of the C-1 sidechains of zaragozic acid A and C are described. Aldol reaction defines the chirality at C-4′and C-5′in two independent routes. Multigram preparation as well as a route amenable to derivatization are highlights of these approaches.     

Enantioselective Preparation of 2‐Aminomethyl Carboxylic Acid Derivatives: Solving the β2‐Amino Acid Problem with the Chiral Auxiliary 4‐Isopropyl‐5,5‐diphenyloxazolidin‐2‐one (DIOZ). Preliminary Communication

Multigram amounts of suitably protected β²‐amino acids with 17 of the 20 proteinogenic side chains are prepared by diastereoselective reactions of Li, B, or Ti enolates of the corresponding 3‐acyl‐4‐isopropyl‐5,5‐diphenyloxazolidin‐2‐ones (acyl‐DIOZ; 1 ) with appropriate electrophiles (amidomethylation, hydroxyalkylation, (benzyloxycarbonyl)methylation) in yields of 55–90% and with diastereoselectivities of 80 to >97% (Scheme). The primary products 2 – 8 thus obtained are converted to protected β²‐amino acids by standard procedures (Table 1). Many of the DIOZ derivatives are highly crystalline compounds (31 X‐ray crystal structures in Table 2). The chiral auxiliary DIOZ, readily prepared in either enantiomeric form, is recovered with high yield.     

Novel heteroleptic cis-(C--N)2Pd(II) chelates for the preparation of enantiopure planar chiral cyclopalladated 2-[tricarbonyl(eta6-phenyl)chromium]pyridine

In the presence of large amounts of [Me4N]Cl, the reaction of ortho-chloromercurated 2-[(eta6-phenyl)tricarbonylchromium]pyridine with mu-chloro cyclopalladated aromatic compounds yields a series of new heteroleptic heterodinuclear cis-(C--N)2Pd(II) complexes, which are valuable precursors of planar chiral cyclopalladated (eta6-arene)Cr(CO)3 complexes.     

Komplexometrische Bestimmung von Metallkationenverunreinigungen in Reinchemikalien

Zusammenfassung Ein Verfahren zur quantitativen summarischen Bestimmung von Metallionenverunreinigungen in flüssigen Chemikalien (Reinheitsprüfung) durch komplexometrische Titration mit photometrischer Endpunktsanzeige wird beschrieben. Als Indikator dient Eriochromschwarz T; erfaßbar ist zirka 1 g in 20 ml. Durch einfaches Einengen des Ausgangsmaterials lassen sich noch Metallionengehalte von 0,01 ppm mit einer Genauigkeit von einigen Prozent bestimmen.

Summary A procedure is described for the quantitative summary determination of metal ion impurities in liquid chemicals (purity tests) through complexo-metric titration with photometric endpoint indication. Eriochrome black T serves as indicator. Approximately 1 g can be detected in 20 ml. Metal ion contents as low as 0.01 ppm can still be determined with a precision of several per cent by simple concentration of the starting material.

Résumé On décrit un procédé de dosage total quantitatif des impuretés à l'état d'ions métalliques dans les produits chimiques liquides (contrôle de la pureté) par titrage complexométrique avec détection du point équivalent par photométrie. On utilise le noir ériochrome T comme indicateur. La limite de dilution est d'environ 1 g/20 ml. On peut encore doser des teneurs en ions métalliques de 0,01 ppm avec une erreur de quelques pour cent simplement en diminuant la quantité initiale de substance.

     

The adsorption of endothelin 1 to phospholipids is governed by electrostatic interactions: A monolayer and fluorescence study

In order to elucidate the influence on the lipidic environment on the recognition process of its membrane associated receptor, the interactions of the vasoconstrictor peptide endothelin 1 with various phospholipids have been investigated using different lipidic model membranes: monolayers at constant surface pressure, vesicles and micelles. A monolayer study of ET1 adsorbed onto the water surface has shown that the C-terminus of the peptide points towards the aqueous phase. Penetration measurements into lipidic monolayers indicate that ET1 adsorbs to phospholipids with an orientation similar to that of the air–water interface and fluorescence measurements are in agreement with such an orientation of the peptide. This adsorption is selective for neutral phospholipids and indicates that the nature of the phospholipid headgroups is of major importance for the approach of the membrane associated receptor.     

Synthesis of [ethylene-1-(eta(5)-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1-indenyl)-2- (eta(5)-4',5',6',7'-tetrahydro-2'-indenyl)]titanium dichloride, the elusive isomer of the Brintzinger-type ansa-titanocenes

We present a short synthesis of 1-(2-indenyl)-2-(3-indenyl)ethane (5) and a method for its conversion to the ansa-metallocene [ethylene(eta5-inden-1-yl)(eta5-inden-2-yl)]titanium dichloride (13). The synthetic strategy applied to prepare bisindene 5 relies on the efficient alkylation of 2-(phenylsulfonyl)indane followed by HMPA-assisted E1cB-elimination of phenylsulfinate. This tandem sequence circumvents the predisposition of indene to undergo C(1)-alkylation and enables access to C(2)-substituted indenes. The key step in the synthesis of the title ansa-titanocene (4) features a previously unreported equilibration step to generate the bis(indenide anion) of 5. Complexation with TiCl4.(THF)2 followed by hydrogenation of the product metallocene furnishes ansa-titanocene 4.     

New stereoselective syntheses of cis- and trans-2-methyl-4-arylpiperidines

A stereoselective approach has been developed for the synthesis of cis- and trans-2-methyl-4-arylpiperidines from a common intermediate. The Ni-catalyzed hydrogenolysis of N-Boc-2-methyl-4-aryl-4-piperidinols, obtained by addition of organometallic reagents on N-Boc-2-methyl-4-piperidone, afforded the trans derivatives with up to 95% selectivity whereas the corresponding cis isomers were obtained in the presence of palladium catalysts.     

The pH dependence of phenolphthalein: A 13c NMR study

The pH dependence of the ¹³C NMR spectra of phenolphthalein has been measured and interpreted. The spectrum of the neutral compound 1 is compared with the spectra of the dianion 4, the trianion5 and the carbocation7. At the first time spectroscopic evidence for the carbinol 6 is given.     

The cellulose system in viscin from mistletoe berries

The cellulose system of the viscous fibrous cellulosic polysaccharide (viscan) in the viscin tissue of the European mistletoe, Viscum album L., was analyzed by chemical and physicochemical techniques including sugar analysis, optical and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray and electron diffraction together with solid state CP/MAS ¹³C-NMR spectroscopy. The results confirmed that in the elongated thin viscin cells, the cellulose microfibrils (having a diameter of around 3 nm) were tightly coiled with their axes perpendicular to the long axis of the cell. Upon stretching these cells became deformed by more than a hundred fold. In such a deformation, the cellulose microfibrils became unwound to be perfectly aligned along the stretching direction. Based on solid-state CP/MAS ¹³C-NMR spectroscopic analysis of the viscin tissue, it was found that its cellulose consisted of I and I polymorphs in the ratio 1:1.     

Ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of isomerically pure functional monomers and acyclic diene metathesis depolymerization (retro-ADMET) of functionalized polyalkenamers

ROMP and retro-acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) were used for the synthesis of new functional polymers and functional oligomers, respectively. Purely exo and enantiomerically pure norbornene and 7-oxanorbornene derivatives were prepared using stereospecific synthesis, effective fractionation and high yield condensation reactions. Successful ROMPs of those monomers were performed using either the new carbenic Schrock’s or Grubb’s catalysts or in some cases a classical bicomponent catalyst. New functional polymers such as optically active poly(norbornene-2-carboxylic acid), reactive poly(norbornene-2-azlactone), and side-chain liquid crystal polyoxanorbornenes were fully characterized. On the other hand, successful depolymerizations of 1,4-polyisoprene and of epoxidized 1,4-polybutadiene via cross-metathesis with 4-octene were performed using a stabilized bicomponent catalyst and the Grubb’s catalyst, respectively. Conditions for the controlled synthesis of epoxidized oligobutadienes and of epoxydienic monomers via retro-ADMET were clearly defined.
