Microstructure of contact layers formed by the contact melting of copper and aluminum

The contact melting of copper and aluminum is performed in the nonsteady-state diffusion mode at a temperature of 570°C. Fragments of a spherical phase, presumably CuAl₂, 10–15 μm in size and a lamellar phase 70–200 μm in length and 10 μm in width are found on the cleaved facets of the contact layer formed.

Multidetector system for nanosecond tagged neutron technology based on hardware selection of events

At the T(d, n)He⁴ reaction a neutron is accompanied by an associated alpha-particle emitted in the opposite direction. A time and a direction of the neutron escape can be determined by measuring a time and coordinates of the alpha particle at the position-sensitive alpha-detector. The nanosecond tagged neutron technology (NTNT) based on this principle has great potentialities for various applications, e.g., for remote detection of explosives. A spectrum of gamma-rays emitted at the interaction of tagged neutrons with nuclei of chemical elements allows identify a chemical composition of an irradiated object. For practical realization of NTNT, a time resolution of recording the alpha-gamma coincidences should be close to 1 ns. The total intensity of signals can exceed 1 × 10⁶ 1/s from all gamma-detectors and 7 × 10⁶ 1/s from the alpha-detector. The processing of such stream of data without losses and distortion of information is one of challenging problems of NTNT. Several models of analog DAQ system based on hardware selection of events were devised and their characteristics are examined. The comparison with the digital DAQ systems demonstrated that the analog DAQ provides better timing parameters, lower power consumption, and higher maximum rate of useful events.     

The <Emphasis Type="Italic">A</Emphasis> dependence of <Emphasis Type="Italic">K</Emphasis><Superscript>0</Superscript> and Λ Neutrinoproduction on nuclei

The A dependence of the production of K ⁰ and Λ is investigated for the first time in neutrino-nuclear reactions using the data obtained with the SKAT bubble chamber. An exponential parametrization (∼A ^β) of the particle yields results in = 0.20 ± 0.05 for V ⁰ particles (K ⁰ and Λ), while for π ⁻ mesons the A dependence is much weaker ( = 0.068 ± 0.007). A nuclear enhancement of the ratio K ⁰/π ⁻ is found; this ratio increases from 0.055 ± 0.013 for vN interactions up to 0.070 ± 0.011 at A ≈ 21 and 0.099 ± 0.011 at A ≈ 45. It is observed that the multiplicity rise of V ⁰ occurs predominantly in the backward hemisphere of the hadronic system. It is shown that the A dependence of the Λ⁰ and π ⁻ yields can be reproduced in the framework of a model incorporating the secondary intranuclear interactions of pions originating from the primary vN interactions. Measurement of the spin-structure function g 2 and the semi-inclusive double-spin asymmetries at HERMES

A measurement of the virtual-photon asymmetry A ₂ and of the spin-structure function g ₂ of the proton are presented for the kinematic range of the HERMES experiment carried out at the HERA electron storage ring at DESY. Semi-inclusive longitudinal double-spin asymmetries provide new insight into the valence quark helicity distributions Δu _v and Δd _v.
