Spectrochemical Properties of Noncubical Transition Metal Complexes in Solutions. XIV. Angular Overlap Studies of bis(Salicylidene-2-aminothiazole)Copper(II) in Various Solvents

The copper(II) complex [Cu(sat)], where Hsat is salicylidene-2-aminothiazole (bidentate Schiff - base), was studied in variety of solvents. In the solid state, the complex is black. It has been characterized by elemental analysis, solubility in common solvents, molar conductivity, and ultraviolet (UV) and visible (Vis) spectroscopy. The complex is easily soluble in common solvents such as chloroform, dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, and 1,4-dioxane. The known crystal structure of similar compounds shows planar coordination geometry for the copper center. Combined multitechnique experiments have been applied to confirm the structure of the complex in solutions. The molar conductivities indicate their nonelectrolyte properties in all these solvents. The spectroscopic measurements were used to study the coordination properties of donoratoms and their bonding abilities.     

The Effect of Cyclodextrins on the Photochemical Stability of 7-Amino-4-methylcoumarin in Aqueous Solution

The effect of -, - and -cyclodextrin onthe photochemical stability of 7-amino-4-methylcoumarin (C120)was studied. Using spectroscopic techniques (UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence, fluorescence anisotropy and circular dichroism) combined with HPLC/MS and MS analysis it was demonstrated that addition of -cyclodextrin to the aqueoussolution of C120 markedly inhibits the photodegradation of that dye. This results from theformation of an inclusion complex between C120 and -cyclodextrin.     

The Monte-Carlo model of a light-emitting diode

The first complete Monte-Carlo model of a surface light-emitting diode is presented in this paper. In the model all important phenomena (including the two-dimensional diffusion of minority carriers before their recombination in the active region and the re-emission of radiation) are taken into account. The influence of various construction parameters on the external quantum efficiency of the homojunction GaAs diode is examined.     

On a two-velocity model of the Boltzmann-Enskog equation

Summary A simple two-velocity model (-model)of the Boltzmann-Enskog equation for a gas of hard spheres is proposed. Physical properties of such a model are analyzed and its differences with respect to the Carleman model are investigated. Global existence theorems and some qualitative properties of solutions of the -model are also proved.On leave from Dept. of Mathematics and Mechanics, University of Warsaw, Poland.     

Thermal decomposition of Cd(CH3COO)2·2H2O studied by a coupled TG-DTA-MS method

The thermal decomposition of cadmium acetate dihydrate in helium and in air atmosphere has been investigated by means of a coupled TG-DTA-MS method combined with X-ray diffraction analysis. Dehydration of Cd(CH₃COO)₂·2H₂O is a two-stage process with Cd(CH₃COO)₂·H₂O as intermediate. The way of Cd(CH₃COO)₂ decomposition strongly depends on the surrounding gas atmosphere and the rate of heating. CdO, acetone and CO₂ are the primary products of decomposition in air. In helium decomposition goes by two parallel and consecutive reactions in which intermediates, Cd and CdCO₃, are formed. Metallic cadmium oxidizes and cadmium carbonate decomposes giving CdO. Some of the metallic cadmium, depending on the heating rate and the concentration of oxygen, evaporates. Acetone is partially oxidized in secondary reactions with oxygen. Domain-wall energy in sintered Nd15Fe77B8 permanent magnet

From measurements of the magnetic domain widthsD versus grain thicknessL, we have determined the domain wall energy in the demagnetized state for a sintered Nd₁₅Fe₇₇B₈ magnet: = 56 erg/cm². Using this wall energy and the published magnetocry-stalline constantK ₁=4.9×10⁷ erg/cm³, we have calculated the exchange constantA=4.0×10^–6 erg/cm, domain wall thickness _B=89 Å, and the critical diameter for single domain particlesD _c=0.67 m.     

Reactions of lithiated 2,5-dimethylazaferrocene with selected electrophiles

Lithiation of 2,5-dimethylazaferrocene 1 with sec-BuLi/TMEDA in THF at −78 °C proceeds (as shown by quenching with D₂O) to comparable extent on the methyl groups and the Cp ring. However, the outcome of the reaction of the lithiated 1 with an electrophile depends on the nature of this electrophile. In the reaction with 4-methoxybenzaldehyde only the product originated from the lateral lithiation is formed, whereas the reaction with 4-methoxyacetophenone and 4,4′-dimethoxybenzophenone afforded mixtures of the products resulting from lateral and ring-lithiation. Similar results were also obtained in the reaction of lithiated 1 with chlorodiphenylphosphine and diphenyl diselenide. On the other hand, the exclusive formation of the Cp-substituted product was observed in the reaction of lithiated 1 with N,N-dimethylformamide. The structures of selected products (oily compounds were transformed into the corresponding crystalline W(CO)₅-complexes) were confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The presented reactions open a novel entry to specifically substituted azaferrocenes (especially those containing heteroatom substituents) with potential applications as ligands for the homogenous catalysis.     

A new convenient synthesis of N-acyl-2-(dimethoxyphosphoryl)glycinates

Easily accessible N-acyl-2-triphenylphosphonioglycinate tetrafluoroborates react smoothly with trimethylphosphite in the presence of methyltriphenylphosphonium iodide to give N-acyl-2-(dimethoxyphosphoryl)glycinates in good or very good yields. The dimethoxyphosphorylglycinates may be isolated by column chromatography, or used directly for the Wadsworth-Emmons synthesis of α,β-dehydro-α-amino acids in a one-pot procedure without purification.
