By promoting dropwise condensation of water, nanostructured superhydrophobic coatings have the potential to dramatically increase the heat transfer rate during this phase change process. As a consequence, these coatings may be a facile method of enhancing the efficiency of power generation and water desalination systems. However, the microdroplet growth mechanism on surfaces which evince superhydrophobic characteristics during condensation is not well understood. In this work, the sub-10 μm dynamics of droplet formation on nanostructured superhydrophobic surfaces are studied experimentally and theoretically. A quantitative model for droplet growth in the constant base (CB) area mode is developed. The model is validated using optimized environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) imaging of microdroplet growth on a superhydrophobic surface consisting of immobilized alumina nanoparticles modified with a hydrophobic promoter. The optimized ESEM imaging procedure increases the image acquisition rate by a factor of 10-50 as compared to previous research. With the improved imaging temporal resolution, it is demonstrated that nucleating nanodroplets coalesce to create a wetted flat spot with a diameter of a few micrometers from which the microdroplet emerges in purely CB mode. After the droplet reaches a contact angle of 130-150°, its base diameter increases in a discrete steplike fashion. The droplet height does not change appreciably during this steplike base diameter increase, leading to a small decrease of the contact angle. Subsequently, the drop grows in CB mode until it again reaches the maximum contact angle and increases its base diameter in a steplike fashion. This microscopic stick-and-slip motion can occur up to four times prior to the droplet coalescence with neighboring drops. Lastly, the constant contact angle (CCA) and the CB growth models are used to show that modeling formation of a droplet with a 150° contact angle in the CCA mode rather than in the CB mode severely underpredicts both the drop formation time and the average heat transfer rate through the drop.  相似文献

The synthesis of Cu(core)Pt(shell) model catalysts by the direct electrochemical deposition of Pt on Cu particles is presented. Cu particles with an average diameter of 200 nm have been deposited on glassy‐carbon electrodes by double pulse electrodeposition from a copper sulfate solution. Subsequent deposition from a platinum nitrate solution under potential control allows for a high selectivity of the Pt deposition towards Cu. Using a combination of cyclic voltammetry, XPS and sputtering, the structure of the generated particles has been analyzed and their core–shell configuration proven. It is shown that the electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction is similar to that of other PtCu catalyst systems. The synthesized structures could allow for the analysis of structure–activity relations of core–shell catalysts on the way to the simple and controlled synthesis of supported Cu(core)Pt(shell) nanoparticles as oxygen reduction catalysts.  相似文献

A reliable synthesis of unstable and highly reactive BrO2F is reported. This compound can be converted into BrO2+SbF6?, BrO2+AsF6?, and BrO2+AsF6??2 BrO2F. The latter decomposes into mixed‐valent Br3O4?Br2+AsF6? with five‐, three‐, one‐, and zero‐valent bromine. BrO2+ H(SO3CF3)2? is formed with HSO3CF3. Excess BrO2F yields mixed‐valent Br3O6+OSO3CF3? with five‐ and three‐valent bromine. Reactions of BrO2F and MoF5 in SO2ClF or CH2ClF result in Cl2BrO6+Mo3O3F13?. The reaction of BrO2F with (CF3CO)2O and NO2 produces O2Br‐O‐CO‐CF3 and the known NO2+Br(ONO2)2?. All of these compounds are thermodynamically unstable.  相似文献

During sample evaporation in conventional vaporizing injection, the supply of heat to the evaporating liquid is a problem, first because the amounts of heat consumed are relatively large and, secondly, because the heat must be transferred to the sample within a very short time. Times available for evaporation, required amounts of heat, possible sources of heat, and the time required to transfer the heat to the sample liquid are discussed. It is shown that mixing with carrier gas contributes little heat to the evaporation process, but also that packings with glass wool have too low a heat capacity to deliver the required amount of heat to the evaporating sample. Transfer of heat from the insert wall to the sample easily requires several seconds, even if cooling of the vaporizing zone by 20° is accepted. Thus “flash evaporation” is usually impossible and most liquids must be held in the vaporizing chamber to allow full evaporation.  相似文献

The Tabor and Richardson strategy for enzymatic chain termination sequencing of DNA using relative peak intensity has been adapted to high performance capillary gel electrophoresis with laser induced fluorescence detection. This approach to DNA sequencing involves the use of only a single fluor and results in significant reduction in the time required to determine a DNA sequence without the use of highly complicated and expensive instrumentation. We present a modification of the Tabor and Richardson approach employing two reactions, each containing complementary mixtures of only three ddNTP's in the concentration ratio 4:2:1. The DNA sequence is determined by relative peak height and by assigning the missing ddNTP to "gaps" between the peaks. The use of only three terminators/reaction simplifies the software task of differentiating between the termination types and makes more efficient use of the available dynamic range. Both complementary mixes generate complete sequence information and the two data files are combined in order to make a more confident sequence call. This process helps to eliminate errors caused by occasional non-uniform incorporation of ddNTP's or false terminations and also alleviates some of the difficulty associated with reading through compressed regions of the electropherogram.  相似文献

Summary: The morphology and tensile deformation behaviour of a highly asymmetric styrene/butadiene star block copolymer (polystyrene (PS) content = 74%) containing random PS‐co‐PB (polybutadiene) copolymer as a rubbery phase were investigated. The existence of double yielding, similar to that observed in some semicrystalline polymers, was detected in this nanostructured amorphous polymer. The observed phenomenon may be correlated with two different micromechanical processes taking place at the initial stage of deformation.

Electrical phenomena at nonionogenic hydrophobic surfaces (solid or liquid) in water, electrolyte, and/or surfactant solutions still attract research. In part 1 of this paper we described the electrokinetic behavior of paraffin wax suspension in water and electrolyte solutions (NaCl or LaCl3). On the basis of the latest data of water structure near hydrophobic surfaces it was concluded that immobilized water dipoles at the interface can play an essential role in the zeta potential formation. In this paper were investigated the zeta potentials of paraffin wax in cationic surfactants cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, C16H33(CH3)3NBr, and octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride, C18H37(CH3)3NCl, and anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate, C12H25SO4Na. Also changes in wettability of the paraffin surface due to the surfactant's adsorption were studied via wetting contact angle measurements and calculation of the surface free energy. It was concluded that at a low surfactant concentration (10(-6) M) the water dipole structure still contributes to the zeta potential, but at a higher one the zeta potential is determined by the surfactant molecules' adsorption. A special role of OH- ions is also clearly seen. Moreover, a functional relationship was found between the surface free energy of the surfactant-covered paraffin surface and the zeta potential.  相似文献
