Plutonium in seawater of the Pacific Ocean

The present plutonium levels in the Pacific Ocean are summarized. The ^239,240Pu concentrations in surface seawaters in the early 2000s were in the range of 1.5 to 9.2 mBq·m⁻³ in the North Pacific and 0.8 to 4.1 mBq·m⁻³ in the South Pacific. There is no marked difference of surface ^239,240Pu distributions between the North and South Pacific subtropical gyres. The vertical profile of ^239,240Pu in the South Pacific was the similar pattern to that in the North Pacific, which is controlled by biogeochemical processes. The ^239,240Pu inventories (down to 2300 m) in the North Pacific are generally greater than that in the South Pacific, which reflects the geographical distribution of global fallout and effect of close-in fallout in the Marshall Islands.

Based on the element maps of twenty-two gibberellin methyl esters fragmentations are discussed, which are characteristic of the common structural features as well as structural modification in gibberellin homologues.     

Decreased l-tryptophan concentration in distinctive brain regions of mice treated repeatedly with phencyclidine

It has been reported that repeated phencyclidine (PCP) treatment induces schizophrenia-like behavior in mice. l-Tryptophan (Trp) concentrations in brain tissues of control (n?=?8) and PCP-treated mice (10 mg/kg/day, s.c., 14 days, n?=?10) were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection. The HPLC method involved pre-column fluorescence derivatization with (R)-(?)-4-(N,N-dimethylaminosulfonyl)-7-(3-isothiocyanatopyrrolidin-1-yl)-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (DBD-PyNCS). Eight different parts of the brain, namely, the frontal cortex, nucleus accumbens, striatum, hippocampus, amygdala, thalamus, hypothalamus, and cerebellum, of both groups were investigated. A significant decrease in the l-Trp concentration in the nucleus accumbens (p?=?0.024) and hippocampus (p?=?0.027) was observed in PCP-treated mice, suggesting that alteration of the l-Trp metabolism might occur in these brain parts.     

Analysis of labor productivity using large-scale data of firm’s financial statements

We investigated labor productivity distribution by analyzing large-scale financial statement data consisting of listed and unlisted Japanese firms to clarify the characteristics of the Japanese labor market. Both high and low productivity sides of the labor productivity distribution follows the power-law distribution. Large inequality in the low productivity side was observed only for the manufacturing sectors in Japan fiscal year (JFY) 1999 and observed for both the manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors in JFY 2002. The decline in the Japanese GDP in JFY 1999 and JFY 2002 were coincided with the large inequality in the low productivity side of the distribution. A lower peak was found for all non-manufacturing sectors. This might be the origin of the low productivity of the non-manufacturing sectors reported in recent economic studies.     

Theoretical prediction for the ground state of (10 )H e with the method of analytic continuation in the coupling constant

Using the method of analytic continuation in the coupling constant with a (8)He +n+n model, we investigated the ground state of (10)He. In addition to a solution with the two valence neutrons in p states ( [ p(1/2 )p(1/2 )](0+ )), we obtained a solution with the valence neutrons in s states ( [s( 1/2) s(1/2)](0+) ) as the ground state. Experimentally, such a state has not yet been observed. This newly predicted state of (10)He with the main component of [s( 1/2)s (1/2) ](0+) corresponds to the ground state of (11)Li with a halo structure.     

The key intermediates that interact with the fluorophores in the peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence reaction of 2,4,6-trichlorophenyl N-aryl-N-tosyloxamates

A kinetic study of peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence reactions employing 2,4,6-trichlorophenyl N-aryl-N-tosyloxamates supports the 1,2-dioxetanones still bearing the eliminating group as the key intermediates that interact with the fluorophores rather than 1,2-dioxetanedione.     

Optical measurements of silicon wafer temperature

An optical technique for precise, non-contact, and real time measurement of silicon wafer temperature that uses the polarized reflectivity ratio R_p/R_s is described. The proposed method is based on temperature dependence of the optical functions of silicon. Expected strong temperature sensitivity is obtained near band gap. Simultaneous monitoring of temperature and oxide layer thickness is discussed using measurements at four wavelength 365 nm, 405 nm, 546 nm, and 820 nm.
