A NEW ONE-STEP REDUCTIVE N-ALKYLATION OF AMINO ACIDS AND THEIR ESTERS

The reductive alkylation of amine with carbonyl compounds usingsodium hydrogen telluride has been investigated in recent years.Application of this method to the synthesis of N-alkyl derivativesof biologically important amino acids and their esters is described.     

Screening of homocysteine from newborn blood spots by high-performance liquid chromatography with coulometric array detection

Homocystinuria, due to a deficiency of cystationine-beta-synthase, refers to the rare inborn error of the metabolism of homocysteine. The identification and prompt treatment of homocystinuria during the neonatal period can prevent or greatly reduce the severity of the clinical consequences. We report a new method for homocystinuria diagnosis from dried blood spots on newborn screening cards, based on high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical coulometric array detection. This method shows an excellent linearity (y=10.36x+0.04; r=0.999), precision (RSDs ranged from 2.7 to 5.8%), recovery (87%) and appears to be a cost-effective approach, being simple, rapid, sensitive and cheap.     

The possibility of different time scales in the dynamics of pore imbibition

To model the imbibition of liquids into porous solids, use is often made of the Lucas-Washburn equation, which relates the distance of penetration of a liquid at a given time to the pore radius, the viscosity and surface tension of the liquid, and the effective contact angle between the liquid and the solid. In this paper, we extend previous large-scale molecular dynamics simulations to show how this tool can be used to study the details of liquid imbibition, including the impact of the contact angle on the dynamics of penetration and the evolution of the internal flow field. In particular, we show that the asymptotic behavior of the contact angle versus time for a completely wetting liquid is given by approximately t(-1/4).     

Liquid-liquid extraction of cadmium(II) from aqueous thiocyanate solutions with liquid anion-exchangers

An investigation has been made on the system liquid anion-exchanger-Cd(II)-NCS⁻. The influence of the acidity and thiocyanate concentration of the aqueous phase on the extraction has been studied. Using various methods of analysis, it has been shown that the complex anion present in the organic extracts is Cd(NCS) ₄ ²⁻ . Details are given concerning the removal of traces of Zn(II) from Cd(II)-containing solutions, and the quantitative separation of Cd(II) from Cr(III).     

Rydberg-London potential for diatomic molecules and unbonded atom pairs

We propose and test a pair potential that is accurate at all relevant distances and simple enough for use in large-scale computer simulations. A combination of the Rydberg potential from spectroscopy and the London inverse-sixth-power energy, the proposed form fits spectroscopically determined potentials better than the Morse, Varnshi, and Hulburt-Hirschfelder potentials and much better than the Lennard-Jones and harmonic potentials. At long distances, it goes smoothly to the London force appropriate for gases and preserves van der Waals's "continuity of the gas and liquid states," which is routinely violated by coefficients assigned to the Lennard-Jones 6-12 form.     

An application of factorial design to the development of fused silica capillary columns

Stationary phase crosslinking conditions for fused silica capillary columns were optimized with the use of a factorial design experiment. This experimental strategy was chosen because it provided for the determination of two-factor interactions. A predictive model was developed for the desired chromatographic performance parameters as a function of the variables of the crosslinking reaction. Confirmatory experiments proved the usefulness of the mathematical model which resulted in the production of capillary columns of superior performance with significant improvements in reproducibility.     

The synthesis of functionalized cis'-bicyclo ¦3.3.0¦octanes

A number of polyfunctionalized cis-bicycio ¦3.3.0¦octanes have been synthesized starting from the tricyclic key intermediate $\text{5}$ which was obtained by the intramolecular cyclopropanation reaction of the diazo keto ester $\text{4}$. Selected stereocontrolled transformations of $\text{5}$ using nucleophiles and electrophiles have been studied for the preparation of the title compounds.     

The oxidation state of tungsten in NaxWO3 bronzes as determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

The XPS spectrum of the 4f levels of W in Na_xWO₃ bronzes is explained by assuming the presence of three oxidation states (W⁶⁺, W⁵⁺ and W⁴⁺). Tetravalent tungsten is formed by dismutation of W⁵⁺. The partial reduction of W⁶⁺ and W⁵⁺. during the recording of XPS spectra is briefly considered.     

NMR experiments on acetals—XXXVII: NMR spectral study of cis-, and trans-6-methyl-4-r-1,3-oxaselenans

The NMR spectral parameters are reported for cis-, and trans-6-Me-4-alkyl-1,3-oxaselenans with the aid of the INDOR- technique. Low temperature studies show the conformational equilibrium in the trans series to be pronouncedly one-sided and a value for the inversion barrier has been obtained.     

An addition to the oxoacid family: H2B12(OH)12

The acid H(2)B(12)(OH)(12) can be isolated as a crystalline solid by protonation of the hydroxylated borane anion, B(12)(OH)(12)(2)(-). This acidic compound has low solubility in water, conducts protons in the solid state, and has thermal stability to a temperature of 400 degrees C. The conductivity mechanism is a Grotthuss mechanism with a low activation enthalpy (9-13 kcal/mol). This new acid represents an addition to the class of oxoacids, of which sulfuric and phosphoric acid are the most prominent examples.
