The production of glass that emulates fallout is desired by the nuclear forensics community for training and measurement exercises. The composition of nuclear fallout is complex, with widely varying isotopic compositions (Fahey et al., Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 107(47):20207–20212, 2010; Bellucci et al., Anal Chem 85:7588–7593, 2013; Wallace et al., J Radioanal Nucl Chem, 2013; Belloni et al., J Environ Radioact 102:852–862, 2011; Freiling, Science 139:1058–1059, 1963; Science 133:1991–1999, 1961; Bunney and Sam Government Report: Naval Ordinance Laboratory, White Oak, 1971). As the gaseous cloud traverses from hotter to cooler regions of the atmosphere, the processes of condensation and nucleation entrain environmental materials, vaporized nuclear materials and fission products. The elemental and isotopic composition of the fission products is altered due to chemical fractionation (i.e. the fission product composition that would be expected from fission of the original nuclear material is altered by differences in condensation rates of the elements); the fallout may be enriched or depleted in volatile or refractory fission products. This paper describes preliminary work to synthesize, irradiate and fractionate the fission product content of irradiated particulate glass using a thermal distillation 2 h after irradiation. The glass was synthesized using a solution-based polymerization of tetraethyl orthosilicate. (Izrael, Radioactive fallout after nuclear explosions and accidents, 2002) Uranium was incorporated into the glass particulate at trace concentrations during polymerization. The particulate was subjected to a short thermal neutron irradiation then heated to 1,273 K approximately 2 h after the end of irradiation. Fission products of 133, 134, 135I, 132, 134Te, 135Xe, 138Cs and 91, 92Sr were observed to be distilled from the particulate. The results of these preliminary studies are discussed.  相似文献

Metal electrodes with micron scale width enable the heating of less than a dozen cells in a confluent layer at predictable temperatures up to 85 °C with an accuracy of ±2 °C. Those performances were obtained by a preliminary robust temperature calibration based on biotin-rhodamine fluorescence and by controlling the temperature map on the substrate through thermal modeling. The temperature accuracy was proved by inducing the expression of heat shock proteins (HSP) in a few NIH-3T3 cells through a confined and precise temperature rise. Our device is therefore effective to locally induce a heat shock response with almost single-cell resolution. Furthermore, we show that cells heated at a higher temperature than the one of heat shock remain alive without producing HSP. Electrode deposition being one of the most common engineering processes, the fabrication of electrode arrays with a simple control circuit is clearly within reach for parallel testing. This should enable the study of several key mechanisms such as cell heat shock, death or signaling. In nanomedicine, controlled drug release by external stimuli such as for example temperature has attracted much attention. Our device could allow fast and efficient testing of thermoactivable drug delivery systems.  相似文献

The U4+ mixed alkyl hydride complex (C5Me5)U[mu-C5Me3(CH2)2](mu-H)2U(C5Me5)2, 1, which contains a cyclopentadienyl ligand with two metalated methylene substituents, can effect four, six, and eight-electron reductions in which the combination of the two H1- ligands and the [C5Me3(CH2)2]3- moiety delivers four electrons and forms (C5Me5)1-. The reaction is formally equivalent to an alkyl hydride reductive elimination, a transformation common with transition metals not previously observed with f element compounds. This type of alkyl hydride reduction reactivity is also observed with a combination of U4+ alkyl and hydride complexes, (C5Me5)2UMe2/[(C5Me5)2UH2]2, which reduces benzene to make [(C5Me5)2U]2(C6H6), a U3+ complex formally containing a (C6H6)2- ligand.  相似文献

A visible‐light‐mediated radical Smiles rearrangement has been developed to address the challenging synthesis of the gem‐difluoro group present in an opioid receptor‐like 1 (ORL‐1) antagonist that is currently in development for the treatment of depression and/or obesity. This method enables the direct and efficient introduction of the difluoroethanol motif into a range of aryl and heteroaryl systems, representing a new disconnection for the synthesis of this versatile moiety. When applied to the target compound, the photochemical step could be conducted on 15 g scale using industrially relevant [Ru(bpy)3Cl2] catalyst loadings of 0.01 mol %. This transformation is part of an overall five‐step route to the antagonist that compares favorably to the current synthetic sequence and demonstrates, in this specific case, a clear strategic benefit of photocatalysis.  相似文献

This critical review concerns the impact of copper-mediated alkyne-azide cycloadditions on peptidomimetic studies. It discusses how this reaction has been used to insert triazoles into peptide chains, to link peptides to other functionalities (e.g. carbohydrates, polymers, and labels), and as a basis for evolution of less peptidic compounds as pharmaceutical leads. Rate constants have been determined for the reactions of Cl atoms with the halogenated ethers CF3CH2OCHF2, CF3CHClOCHF2, and CF3CH2OCClF2 using a relative‐rate technique. Chlorine atoms were generated by continuous photolysis of Cl2 in a mixture containing the ether and CD4. Changes in the concentrations of these two species were measured via changes in their infrared absorption spectra observed with a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. Relative‐rate constants were converted to absolute values using the previously measured rate constants for the reaction, Cl + CD4 → DCl + CD3. Experiments were carried out at 295, 323, and 363 K, yielding the following Arrhenius expressions for the rate constants within this range of temperature:Cl + CF3CH2OCHF2: k = (5.15 ± 0.7) × 10−12 exp(−1830 ± 410 K/T) cm3 molecule−1 s−1 Cl + CF3CHClOCHF2: k = (1.6 ± 0.2) × 10−11 exp(−2450 ± 250 K/T) cm3 molecule−1 s−1 Cl + CF3CH2OCClF2: k = (9.6 ± 0.4) × 10−12 exp(−2390 ± 190 K/T) cm3 molecule−1 s−1 The results are compared with those obtained previously for the reactions of Cl atoms with other halogenated methyl ethyl ethers. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(sodium undecenoyl-L-leucinate) (poly-L-SUL) was fractionated by the use of different molecular weight cutoff (MWCO) filters to narrow the polydispersity of the macromolecular sizes of the polymeric surfactant. The resulting polymeric surfactant fractions were characterized by the use of three techniques: (1) pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance (PFG-NMR) was used to determine the hydrodynamic radii, (2) analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC) was used to determine the molecular weights, and (3) steady-state fluorescence was used to determine the polarity of the nonfractionated and fractionated polymeric surfactants. From the data acquired from PFG-NMR, AUC, and fluorescence, it was noted that the hydrodynamic radii and molecular weight of the fractionated poly-L-SUL increased, while the polarity decreased with the increase in the size of the MWCO filter. However, a similarity in physical properties was observed between the nonfractionated and 10-30K fractionated poly-L-SUL except for the hydrodynamic radius and diffusion coefficients. The influence of different macromolecular sizes of poly-L-SUL on the chiral separation of phenylthiohydantion (PTH)-amino acids and coumarinic derivatives, as test analytes, was elucidated by the use of micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC). The size of polymeric surfactants as a prerequisite for chiral separation was demonstrated by comparing the separation properties of fractionated versus nonfractionated polymeric surfactants. Fractionated poly-L-SUL resulted in enhanced resolution and separation efficiency of the test analytes as compared to the case of the nonfractionated poly-L-SUL. This observation indicates that minimizing polydispersity of polymeric surfactants may be important for some chiral separation applications.  相似文献

The values of the second dissociation constant, pK 2, of N-(2-hydroxyethyl) piperazine-N′-2-ethanesulfonic acid (HEPES) have been reported at twelve temperatures over the temperature range 5 to 55 °C, including 37 °C. This paper reports the results for the pa H of eight isotonic saline buffer solutions with an I=0.16 mol⋅kg−1 including compositions: (a) HEPES (0.01 mol⋅kg−1) + NaHEPES (0.01 mol⋅kg−1) + NaCl (0.15 mol⋅kg−1); (b) HEPES (0.02 mol⋅kg−1) + NaHEPES (0.02 mol⋅kg−1) + NaCl (0.14 mol⋅kg−1); (c) HEPES (0.03 mol⋅kg−1) + NaHEPES (0.03 mol⋅kg−1) + NaCl (0.13 mol⋅kg−1); (d) HEPES (0.04 mol⋅kg−1) + NaHEPES (0.04 mol⋅kg−1) + NaCl (0.12 mol⋅kg−1); (e) HEPES (0.05 mol⋅kg−1) + NaHEPES (0.05 mol⋅kg−1) + NaCl (0.11 mol⋅kg−1); (f) HEPES (0.06 mol⋅kg−1) + NaHEPES (0.06 mol⋅kg−1) + NaCl (0.10 mol⋅kg−1); (g) HEPES (0.07 mol⋅kg−1) + NaHEPES (0.07 mol⋅kg−1) + NaCl (0.09 mol⋅kg−1); and (h) HEPES (0.08 mol⋅kg−1) + NaHEPES (0.08 mol⋅kg−1) + NaCl (0.08 mol⋅kg−1). Conventional pa H values, for all eight buffer solutions from 5 to 55 °C, have been calculated. The operational pH values with liquid junction corrections, at 25 and 37 °C have been determined based on the NBS/NIST standard between the physiological phosphate standard and four buffer solutions. These are recommended as pH standards for physiological fluids in the range of pH = 7.3 to 7.5 at I=0.16 mol⋅kg−1.  相似文献

Genetically encoded fluorescent labels, such as green fluorescent protein, make it possible to visualize a protein's natural distribution and environment in living cells.
