Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Biodegradable Di‐ and Tri‐Block Copolymers Based on Ethylene Carbonate Polymer as Hydrophobic Segment

Synthesis of novel amphiphilic biodegradable block copolymers based on ethylene carbonate is reported in this study. Polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether (MeO‐PEO) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) of varying molar masses are used as macro‐initiator for ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene carbonate in the presence of sodium stannate trihydrate as a heterogeneous transesterification catalyst. Earlier elution of block copolymer from macro‐initiator in size exclusion chromatography (SEC) indicated the successful synthesis of the block copolymers. Ratios of both types of blocks are varied systematically. Liquid chromatography at critical conditions is used for the analysis of the non‐critical individual blocks, and if there are any critical segments that are not attached to the non‐critical block. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the synthesis of ethylene carbonate‐based amphiphilic block copolymers. Chromatographic critical conditions of the ethylene carbonate polymer are also reported for the first time. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. One-Pot Synthesis of 3,4-Dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones and Their Sulfur Derivatives with H2SO4 Supported on Silica Gel or Alumina

The one-pot condensation of aromatic aldehydes, β-dicarbonyl compounds, and urea or thiourea in the presence of H₂SO₄ supported on silica gel or alumina (80% m/m) in refluxing n-hexane produces 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones and their sulfur derivatives in high to excellent yields.     

Ab Initio Study of Structures,Metallotropic 1,2-Shifts and Prototropic 1,2-Shifts of Cyclopentadienyl(trimethyl)silane, -germane and -stannane

Molecular structures, metallotropic and prototropic shifts of cyclopentadienyl(trimethyl)silane ( 1 ), cyclopentadienyl(trimethyl)germane ( 2 ), and cyclopentadienyl(trimethyl)stannane ( 3 ) were investigated using ab initio molecular orbital and the Becke, Lee, Yang, and Parr density functional (B3LYP) methods. The results show that the most stable structure of compounds 1-3 has the (CH 3 ) 3 M fragment in the allylic position. The energy barrier of metallotropic shifts in compound 1 is higher than in 2 , and in compound 2 higher than in 3 , in good agreement with experimental data. The cyclopentadienyl rings in compounds 1-3 are found to be planar but this result contradicts the reported experimental data.     

The Efficient Synthesis of 3,4-Dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-Ones and Their Sulfur Derivatives with H2SO4 Immobilized on Activated Charcoal

Abstract

Various 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-ones (DHPMs) and their sulfur derivatives were efficiently synthesized by a one-pot cyclocondensation reaction of aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes, β-dicarbonyl compounds and urea (or thiourea) in the presence of sulfuric acid immobilized on activated charcoal (133% w/w). The reactions were carried out in refluxing n-hexane-acetonitrile (2.5:0.5 mL) within 5–150 min to give 3,4-dihydropyrimidinones (or thiones) in high to excellent yields (81–97%).     

Synthesis of benzaldehyde-functionalized LewisX trisaccharide analogs for glyco-SAM formation

LewisX (Le^x) antigen based carbohydrate–carbohydrate interactions are mediated by complexation of metal ions. Although theoretical studies about the influence of participating hydroxyl groups in the Le^x trisaccharide head group (Galβ(1-4)[Fucα(1-3)]GlcNAc) could gave same rudimental information about the basic mechanism behind this interaction, a little is known about orientation and configuration of the hydroxyl groups required for the specific interaction mediated by Ca²⁺ complexation. Therefore, there is a need of non-natural derivatives to provide detailed information about the requirements for hydroxyl group arrangement in Le^x head group surface plasmon resonance and gold nanoparticle techniques have shown to be powerful tools to investigate carbohydrate–carbohydrate interactions. Benzaldehyde-functionalized glycans can be used for attachment to both gold nanoparticles and surface plasmon resonance sensor surfaces. Therefore, seven benzaldehyde equipped Le^x analogs including the natural trisaccharide were synthesized utilizing convergent approach. The derivatives were applied in ongoing carbohydrate–carbohydrate interaction studies by surface plasmon resonance experiments to prove theoretical postulate about the structural requirements of hydroxyl group arrangements in Le^x trisaccharides.     

Determination of neutron flux parameters in PUSPATI TRIGA Mark II Research Reactor, Malaysia

In standardization NAA, it is necessary to characterize the neutron spectrum parameters such as epithermal neutron flux shape factor (α), thermal to epithermal neutron flux ratio (f), thermal neutron flux (φ _th) and epithermal neutron flux (φ _epi) in the irradiation facility to determine the concentration of an element in the sample using absolute and k ₀ standardization methods. The α and f were determined using Cd-ratio multi monitor method using experimental data obtained in PUSPATI TRIGA Mark II research reactor at four irradiation positions (10, 20, 30 and 40) of the rotary rack. The calculated values of α and f ranged from 0.006 to 0.0281 and 18.56 to 19.12 respectively. The average values of φ _th and φ _epi were found as 2.33 × 10¹² and 1.23 × 10¹¹ n cm^?2 s^?1 respectively. Moreover, a comparison of the neutron flux parameters in the present study shows an acceptable level of consistency with those of previous studies.
