The purpose of this article is to contribute to the dialogue about the notion of advanced mathematical thinking by offering an alternative characterization for this idea, namely advancing mathematical activity. We use the term advancing (versus advanced) because we emphasize the progression and evolution of students' reasoning in relation to their previous activity. We also use the term activity, rather than thinking. This shift in language reflects our characterization of progression in mathematical thinking as acts of participation in a variety of different socially or culturally situated mathematical practices. For these practices, we emphasize the changing nature of students' mathematical activity and frame the process of progression in terms of multiple layers of horizontal and vertical mathematizing.  相似文献

Postural behavior has traditionally been studied using linear assessments of stability (e.g., center of pressure ellipse area). While these assessments may provide valuable information, they neglect the nonlinear nature of the postural system and often lead to the conflation of variability with pathology. Moreover, assessing postural behavior in isolation or under otherwise unrealistic conditions may obscure the natural dynamics of the postural system. Alternatively, assessing postural complexity during ecologically valid tasks (e.g., conversing with others) may provide unique insight into the natural dynamics of the postural system across a wide array of temporal scales. Here, we assess postural complexity using Multiscale Sample Entropy in young and middle-aged adults during a listening task of varying degrees of difficulty. It was found that middle-aged adults exhibited greater postural complexity than did young adults, and that this age-related difference in postural complexity increased as a function of task difficulty. These results are inconsistent with the notion that aging is universally associated with a loss of complexity, and instead support the notion that age-related differences in complexity are task dependent.  相似文献

The number of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies regarding the human spine has considerably increased and it is challenging because of the spine’s small size and artifacts associated with the most commonly used clinical imaging method. A novel segmentation method based on the reduced field-of-view (rFOV) DTI dataset is presented in cervical spinal canal cerebrospinal fluid, spinal cord grey matter and white matter classification in both healthy volunteers and patients with neuromyelitis optica (NMO) and multiple sclerosis (MS). Due to each channel based on high resolution rFOV DTI images providing complementary information on spinal tissue segmentation, we want to choose a different contribution map from multiple channel images. Via principal component analysis (PCA) and a hybrid diffusion filter with a continuous switch applied on fourteen channel features, eigen maps can be obtained and used for tissue segmentation based on the Bayesian discrimination method. Relative to segmentation by a pair of expert readers, all of the automated segmentation results in the experiment fall in the good segmentation area and performed well, giving an average segmentation accuracy of about 0.852 for cervical spinal cord grey matter in terms of volume overlap. Furthermore, this has important applications in defining more accurate human spinal cord tissue maps when fusing structural data with diffusion data. rFOV DTI and the proposed automatic segmentation outperform traditional manual segmentation methods in classifying MR cervical spinal images and might be potentially helpful for detecting cervical spine diseases in NMO and MS.  相似文献

The continuous windowed Fourier and wavelet transforms are created from the actions of the Heisenberg and affine groups, respectively. Both wavelet and windowed Fourier bases are known to be complete; that is, the only signal which is orthogonal to every element of each basis is the zero signal. The Jacobi group is a group which contains both the Heisenberg and affine groups, and it can also be used to produce bases for signal processing. This paper investigates completeness for bases of one and two real variables which are produced by the Jacobi group.  相似文献

We consider the polyhedral approach to solving the capacitated facility location problem. The valid inequalities considered are the knapsack cover, flow cover, effective capacity, single depot, and combinatorial inequalities. The flow cover, effective capacity and single depot inequalities form subfamilies of the general family of submodular inequalities. The separation problem based on the family of submodular inequalities is NP-hard in general. For the well known subclass of flow cover inequalities, however, we show that if the client set is fixed, and if all capacities are equal, then the separation problem can be solved in polynomial time. For the flow cover inequalities based on an arbitrary client set and general capacities, and for the effective capacity and single depot inequalities we develop separation heuristics. An important part of these heuristics is based on the result that two specific conditions are necessary for the effective cover inequalities to be facet defining. The way these results are stated indicates precisely how structures that violate the two conditions can be modified to produce stronger inequalities. The family of combinatorial inequalities was originally developed for the uncapacitated facility location problem, but is also valid for the capacitated problem. No computational experience using the combinatorial inequalities has been reported so far. Here we suggest how partial output from the heuristic identifying violated submodular inequalities can be used as input to a heuristic identifying violated combinatorial inequalities. In this introductory paper we take partial stock of the current state of field on calculus research, exemplifying both the promise of research advances as well as the limitations. We identify four trends in the calculus research literature, starting with identifying misconceptions to investigations of the processes by which students learn particular concepts, evolving into classroom studies, and, more recently research on teacher knowledge, beliefs, and practices. These trends are related to a model for the cycle of research and development aimed at improving learning and teaching. We then make use of these four trends and the model for the cycle of research and development to highlight the contributions of the papers in this issue. We conclude with some reflections on the gaps in literature and what new areas of calculus research are needed.  相似文献

Indazole is an important scaffold in medicinal chemistry. At present, the progress on synthetic methodologies has allowed the preparation of several new indazole derivatives with interesting pharmacological properties. Particularly, the antiprotozoal activity of indazole derivatives have been recently reported. Herein, a series of 22 indazole derivatives was synthesized and studied as antiprotozoals. The 2-phenyl-2H-indazole scaffold was accessed by a one-pot procedure, which includes a combination of ultrasound synthesis under neat conditions as well as Cadogan’s cyclization. Moreover, some compounds were derivatized to have an appropriate set to provide structure-activity relationships (SAR) information. Whereas the antiprotozoal activity of six of these compounds against E. histolytica, G. intestinalis, and T. vaginalis had been previously reported, the activity of the additional 16 compounds was evaluated against these same protozoa. The biological assays revealed structural features that favor the antiprotozoal activity against the three protozoans tested, e.g., electron withdrawing groups at the 2-phenyl ring. It is important to mention that the indazole derivatives possess strong antiprotozoal activity and are also characterized by a continuous SAR.  相似文献
