Busy Periods of Poisson Arrival Queues with Loss

We consider two queues with loss, one is the finite dam with Poisson arrivals and the other is the M/G/1 queue with impatient customers. We use the method of Kolmogorov's backward differential equation and construct a type of renewal equation to obtain the Laplace transform of busy(or wet) period in both queues. As a consequence, we provide the explicit forms of expected busy periods.     

Formation and removal of multi-layered fluorescence patterns in gold-ion doped glass

We report the formation of fluorescence patterns inside gold-doped glass medium by femtosecond-laser fabrication. Strong fluorescence images appeared from the irradiated multi-layered region after low temperature annealing. We removed the images by exposing the glass to an electric furnace or a CO₂ laser beam for high temperature annealing. The method was also applied to recording, reading, and erasing of fluorescence data by a femtosecond laser, a 405-nm laser diode, and a CO₂ laser respectively.     

Preparation of polydiacetylene immobilized optically encoded beads

Polydiacetylene (PDA), which can change the chromic and fluorescence properties by inducing environmental perturbations, is immobilized on planar solid supports for many biological applications. In this work, we immobilize PDA onto optically encoded spherical beads (PDA-SERS beads). The prepared PDA immobilized beads (36 μm) exhibit a blue color without fluorescence. By inducing stress, their color and fluorescence properties are changed to red with fluorescence. The SERS spectra of the PDA-SERS beads can be recognized over the PDA background. Moreover, our PDA immobilization methods are successfully applied to silica-surface SERS-encoded beads (5 μm) and proven to also be useful in fluorescence encoding systems.     

Online and semi-online scheduling of two machines under a grade of service provision

We consider the online scheduling of two machines under a grade of service (GoS) provision and its semi-online variant where the total processing time is known. Respectively for the online and semi-online problems, we develop algorithms with competitive ratios of and which are shown to be optimal.     

Metal‐induced optical sensing and optical switching in poly(pyridyl phenylene)

The synthesis of a conjugated polymer containing pyridyl units in the polymer backbone was successfully carried out with 2,6‐dibromopyridine and a diboronic acid derivative via the Suzuki coupling reaction. This polymer had a number‐average molecular weight of 4000 and excellent solubility in conventional organic solvents; this suggested the effect of the incorporation of dialkoxy side chains. A metallochromic phenomenon with ferric ions was clearly observed in spin‐coated films and solutions of the polymer. The response of the absorption and the fluorescence changes of the polymer films were rapid and were reproduced more than 15 times. A lightly bound intermolecular interaction between the pyridine ligand and cation was presumed to be responsible for the facile optical switching property of the polymer films. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
