It is well known that the signature operator on a manifold defines a K-homology class which is an orientation after inverting 2. Here we address the following puzzle: What is this class localized at 2, and what special properties does it have? Our answers include the following:

- the reduction mod 8 of the K-homology class of the signature operator is an oriented homotopy invariant;

We report strong enhancement (approximately 10(3)) of the spontaneous Raman scattering from individual silicon nanowires and nanocones as compared with bulk Si. The observed enhancement is diameter (d), excitation wavelength (lambda(laser)), and incident polarization state dependent, and is explained in terms of a resonant behavior involving incident electromagnetic radiation and the structural dielectric cross section. The variation of the Raman enhancement with d, lambda(laser), and polarization is shown to be in good agreement with model calculations of scattering from an infinite dielectric cylinder. 相似文献

States with private correlations but little or no distillable entanglement were recently reported. Here, we consider the secure distribution of such states, i.e., the situation when an adversary gives two parties such states and they have to verify privacy. We present a protocol which enables the parties to extract from such untrusted states an arbitrarily long and secure key, even though the amount of distillable entanglement of the untrusted states can be arbitrarily small. 相似文献

This paper describes the design, fabrication, and characterization of a microfabricated compartmented culture system (micro-CCS) useful for electrophysiological signaling studies in cultured neurons. The focus of the paper is the process of interfacing the micro-CCS with cultured neurons and to demonstrate the applicability of the system for biochemical-mediated electrophysiological studies. Moreover, we show that we can record action potentials from cultured neurons through the extracellular compartmented application of elevated levels of K(+) ions. Finally, we show that we can isolate the electrophysiological effects of the sodium channel blocker tetrodotoxin in one of the compartments of a two compartment culture while recording electrophysiological data from both compartments. 相似文献

High-throughput stretching and monitoring of single DNA molecules in continuous elongational flow offers compelling advantages for biotechnology applications such as DNA mapping. However, the polymer dynamics in common microfluidic implementations are typically complicated by shear interactions. These effects were investigated by observation of fluorescently labeled 185 kb bacterial artificial chromosomes in sudden mixed shear and elongational microflows generated in funneled microfluidic channels. The extension of individual free DNA molecules was studied as a function of accumulated fluid strain and strain rate. Under constant or gradually changing strain rate conditions, stretching by the sudden elongational component proceeded as previously described for an ideal elongational flow (T. T. Perkins, D. E. Smith and S. Chu, Science, 1997, 276, 2016): first, increased accumulated fluid strain and increased strain rate produced higher stretching efficiencies, despite the complications of shear interactions; and second, the results were consistent with unstretched molecules predominantly in hairpin conformations. More abrupt strain rate profiles did not deliver a uniform population of highly extended molecules, highlighting the importance of balance between shear and elongational components in the microfluidic environment for DNA stretching applications. DNA sizing with up to 10% resolution was demonstrated. Overall, the device delivered 1000 stretched DNA molecules per minute in a method compatible with diffraction-limited optical sequence motif mapping and without requiring laborious chemical modifications of the DNA or the chip surface. Thus, the method is especially well suited for genetic characterization of DNA mixtures such as in pathogen fingerprinting amidst high levels of background DNA. 相似文献

We demonstrate enhancement by 1 order of magnitude of the high-order harmonics generated in argon by combining a fundamental field at 1300 nm (10(14) W cm(-2)) and its orthogonally polarized second harmonic at 650 nm (2 × 10(13) W cm(-2)) and by controlling the relative phase between them. This extends earlier work by ensuring that the main effect is the combined field steering the electron trajectory with negligible contribution from multiphoton effects compared to the previous schemes with 800/400 nm fields. We access a broad energy range of harmonics (from 20 eV to 80 eV) at a low laser intensity (far below the ionization saturation limit) and observe deep modulation of the harmonic yield with a period of π in the relative phase. Strong field theoretical analysis reveals that this is principally due to the steering of the recolliding electron wave packet by the two-color field. Our modeling also shows that the atto chirp can be controlled, leading to production of shorter pulses. 相似文献
