Photoinduced Electron Transfer Reactions of alpha-Cyclopropyl- and alpha-Epoxy Ketones. Tandem Fragmentation-Cyclization to Bi-, Tri-, and Spirocyclic Ketones

Reductive photoinduced electron transfer (PET) reactions have been performed with various bicyclic alpha-cyclopropyl-substituted ketones and tertiary amines. The reaction resulted in a regioselective cleavage of one cyclopropyl bond under formation of an exocyclic radical with an endocyclic enolate unit. In the case of bicyclic ketones with an unsaturated side chain, various bicyclic, spirocyclic, and tricyclic products are accessible via radical cyclization, depending on the position of the alkenyl substituent. In addition to triethylamine, N-silylated amines have also been used as electron donors, leading to a variety of compounds, among them are silylated fragmentation products, indicating that a proton is transferred from not only the amine radical cation but also the cationic silyl group. The intramolecular Paternó-Büchi reaction has also been studied for cyclopropane derivatives of the jasmone type leading to tetracyclic oxetanes. Finally, alpha-epoxy-substituted ketones have been investigated under PET conditions, yielding ring-opened products.     

Oxydation von Allylalkoholen mit Blei(IV)-acetat

Lead tetraacetate (LTA) oxidation of the allylic alcohols 1, 10, 14 and 19 leads to the formation of the epoxides 2, 11, 15 and 20 , products of a novel internal addition reaction of the electron deficient alcohol oxygen to the allylic double bond. In some cases ( 10, 14 ) the formation of a new type of acetoxylated enolethers ( 12, 16 ) is observed. The LTA oxidation of the allylic dienols 21 and 29 gives rise to the formation of the epoxyacetates 25 and 33 , products of a similar internal addition reaction. Furthermore, a variety of cyclization products ( 22, 23, 24, 26, 30, 31, 32 and 34 ) has been isolated whose formation requires an isomerisation of the allylic trans double bond to a cis one.     

A system for defining reference materials applicable to all food matrices

Recently the subcommittee on Food Definition of the AOAC INTERNATIONAL Task Force on Methods for Nutrition Labeling proposed a Food Matrix Organizational System [4] to systematically judge the applicability of collaboratively studied methods over a range of food matrices. This system describes a food matrix by its location in one of nine sectors in a triangle, with each point of the triangle defined as representing 100% and the opposite side representing 0% of the normalized contents of each of three major components of FAT, PROTEIN and CARBOHYDRATE. Foods falling within the same sector would be chemically similar and thus should behave in a similar analytical manner. This same scheme can be used to select one or two food matrices representing each sector, for development of a series of reference materials representing all foods. The list of 5250 foods contained in the USDA Nutrient Data Base for Standard Reference has been sorted and matched to this schematic to determine the scope of the selection process. In addition the list of foods in the USDA Data Base for Food Consumption Surveys has been examined. Results and progress of this selection process are reported.     

Graph products of groups and group spaces

An application of constructions from so-called Bass-Serre theory to group spaces in noncommutative geometry is discussed motivated by the question how to make visible the interplay of different structures coming together in the notion of a group space. A compact summary of basic notions and constructions from Bass-Serre theory up to the structure theorem is developed; it should serve as a brief guideline for further applications. Concluding prospects indicate a way for generalizing the methods from a categorical point of view.Dedicated to Professor Johannes André on the occasion of his 70th birthday

Li(thf)3cyclo-(P4tBu4CH)]--synthesis, molecular structure and dynamic behaviour

[Li(thf)3cyclo-(P4tBu4CH)] (2-Li), containing the first tetraphosphacyclopentanide anion cyclo-(P4tBu4CH)- (2), was prepared, and its dynamic behaviour in solution analysed by variable-temperature 31P NMR spectroscopy.     

A modification of the heteropoly blue method for the microgram determination of arsenic in biological materials

Summary A sensitive method has been developed for analysis of trace amounts of arsenic in biological materials using the heteropoly blue method. The method employs a closed apparatus and a nitrogen atmosphere, and allows the detection of arsenic in ppm concentration using samples of 100 mg.

Zusammenfassung Eine empfindliche Methode zur Bestimmung von Arsenspuren in biologischem Material im Wege der Molybdänblaumethode wurde ausgearbeitet. Man arbeitet dabei in einer geschlossenen Apparatur in Stickstoffatmosphäre und kann so in 100-mg-Proben Arsenkonzentrationen in der Größenordnung von ppm bestimmen.
