Identification of the point defects in diamond as measured by Raman spectroscopy: comparison between experiment and computation

Raman spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to identify the vibrational spectrum of simple point defects in diamond. Two local mode frequencies are found in ion irradiated diamond. The first (with an energy of 185 meV) is clearly identified as arising from the vacancy defect, whereas a mode at 202 meV is demonstrated to be due to the [1 0 0] split interstitial.     

Orthogonal art galleries with interior walls

Consider an art gallery formed by a polygon on n vertices with m pairs of vertices joined by interior diagonals, the interior walls. Suppose that all walls (interior as well as exterior) are horizontal or vertical and each interior wall has an arbitrarily placed, arbitrarily small doorway. We show that the minimum number of guards that suffice to guard all such art galleries with n vertices and m interior walls is min{⌊(n+2m)/4⌋,⌊(n+3⌊n/2⌋+m-2)/8⌋}.     

Complex function algebras and removable spaces

The compact Hausdorff space X has the Complex Stone-Weierstrass Property (CSWP) iff it satisfies the complex version of the Stone-Weierstrass Theorem. W. Rudin showed that all scattered spaces have the CSWP. We describe some techniques for proving that certain non-scattered spaces have the CSWP. In particular, if X is the product of a compact ordered space and a compact scattered space, then X has the CSWP if and only if X does not contain a copy of the Cantor set.

Synthesis of apocarotenoids by acyclic cross metathesis and characterization as substrates for human retinaldehyde dehydrogenases

A new synthesis of three apocarotenoids, namely 14′-apo-β-carotenal, 12′-apo-β-carotenal and 10′-apo-β-carotenal, has been achieved that is based on the acyclic cross-metathesis of the hexaene derived from retinal and the corresponding partners. These compounds can be enzymatically converted to their carboxylic acids by the human aldehyde dehydrogenases involved in retinaldehyde oxidation. Their kinetic parameters suggest that these enzymes might play a role in the physiological metabolism of apocarotenoids.
