Validation of a coupled FE-model for the simulation of methane oxidation via thermal imaging

To simulate the processes of methane oxidation in landfill cover layers, a new computational model was created. The purpose of the model is to allow a forecast on the performance of methanotrophic activity in landfill cover layers under changing environmental conditions. Therefore, a thermodynamic consistent model based on the well-known Theory of Porous Media (TPM) combined with the mixture theory was developed, which analyzes the relevant gas productions of methane, oxygen and carbon dioxide. Diffusion, advection and conversion processes are considered as well as the energy production during methane oxidation. With the help of the thermal imaging technique a new experimental setup was developed in order to validate the coupled model in terms of the heat generation. (© 2015 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Schatten properties,nuclearity and minimality of phase shift invariant spaces

We extend Feichtinger's minimality property on the smallest non-trivial time-frequency shift invariant Banach space, to the quasi-Banach case. Analogous properties are deduced for certain matrix spaces.We use these results to prove that the pseudo-differential operator $\mathrm{Op}(a)$ is a Schatten-q operator from $M^{\infty }$ to $M^p$ and r-nuclear operator from $M^{\infty }$ to $M^r$ when $a\in M^r$ for suitable p, q and r in $(0,\infty ]$.     

Characteristic parameter sets and limits of circulant Hermitian polygon transformations

Polygon transformations based on taking the apices of similar triangles constructed on the sides of an initial polygon are analyzed as well as the limit polygons obtained by iteratively applying such transformations. In contrast to other approaches, this is done with respect to two construction parameters representing a base angle and an apex perpendicular subdivision ratio. Furthermore, a combined transformation leading to circulant Hermitian matrices is proposed, which eliminates the rotational effect of the basic transformation. A finite set of characteristic parameter subdomains is derived for which the sequence converges to specific eigenpolygons. Otherwise, limit polygons turn out to be linear combinations of up to three eigenpolygons. This leads to a full classification of circulant Hermitian similar triangles based polygon transformations and their limit polygons. As a byproduct classical results as Napoleon’s theorem and the Petr-Douglas-Neumann theorem can be easily deduced.     

Global solutions for quasilinear parabolic problems

Results on the global existence of classical solutions for quasilinear parabolic equations in bounded domains with homogeneous Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions are presented. Besides quasilinear parabolic equations, the method is also applicable to some weakly-coupled reaction-diffusion systems and to elliptic equations with nonlinear dynamic boundary conditions. Polynomial factorization over

We describe algorithms for polynomial factorization over the binary field , and their implementation. They allow polynomials of degree up to to be factored in about one day of CPU time, distributing the work on two processors.

     

Continuity properties in non-commutative convolution algebras, with applications in pseudo-differential calculus

We study continuity properties for a family {s_p}_p?1 of increasing Banach algebras under the twisted convolution, which also satisfies that a∈s_p, if and only if the Weyl operator a^w(x,D) is a Schatten-von Neumann operator of order p on L². We discuss inclusion relations between the s_p-spaces, Besov spaces and Sobolev spaces. We prove also a Young type result on s_p for dilated convolution. As an application we prove that f(a)∈s₁, when a∈s₁ and f is an entire odd function. We finally apply the results on Toeplitz operators and prove that we may extend the definition for such operators.
