Although many technologies exist for inspecting piping systems, they are most successful on straight pipes and are often unable to accommodate the added complexities of pipe elbows, bends, twists, and branches, particularly if the region of interest is inaccessible. This paper presents a numerical technique based on the elastodynamic finite integration technique for simulating guided elastic wave propagation in piping systems. Comparisons show agreement between experimental and simulated data, and guided wave interaction with flaws, focusing, and propagation in pipe bends are presented. These examples demonstrate the ability of the simulation method to be used to study elastic wave propagation in piping systems which include three-dimensional pipe bends, and suggest its potential as a design tool for designing pipe inspection hardware and ultrasonic signal processing algorithms. 相似文献

Maternal meddling in neonatal sharks: implications for interpreting stable isotopes in young animals

Stable isotopes of neonatal vertebrates reflect those of their mother's diet and foraging location. Evaluating feeding strategies and habitat use of neonates is consequently complicated by the maternal isotopic signal and its subsequent elimination with growth. Thus, methods that measure the loss of the maternal signal, i.e. when the isotopic signal of a neonate reflects its own diet, are needed. Values of δ13C and δ15N were measured in liver and muscle tissues of <1 year old bull (Carcharhinus leucas) and Atlantic sharpnose (Rhizoprionodon terraenovae) sharks and related to age using, total length, date sampled and umbilical scar stage (USS). We observed a decline in δ13C and δ15N values with age that was different among species, similar among isotopes, and greater in liver than in muscle; highlighting that retention of the maternal signal is dependent on species‐specific life history and tissue characteristics. USS was most effective for assessing the loss of the maternal isotopic signal in the faster growing Atlantic sharpnose shark, but was less effective for the slower growing bull shark. Total length and date sampled were overall less effective and may be more informative for slower growing species when coupled with USS, as variable size at birth and misclassification of animals >1 year old, which remain in nursery habitats, increase the variability of the isotopic values. Consideration of the maternal signal and measuring its loss are thus necessary when analyzing the stable isotopes of young animals, as there is potential to misinterpret feeding strategies, over‐estimate trophic position and incorrectly assign carbon source. Metal-bipyridine complexes are a vehicle for developing approaches for studying the fluorescence of gas-phase ions; however, conclusions regarding fluorescence behavior depend on explicitly identifying the ionic species in the gas phase. [Ru(bpy)(3)]X(2) and [Os(bpy(3))]X(2), (where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine and X = Cl or PF(6)), were studied using direct laser desorption (LD) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) using Fourier transform mass spectrometry (FTMS). LD spectra of the PF(6) salt of the Ru and Os complexes reveal counterion attachment, fluoride transfer, and significant losses of H for a number of peaks. LD of the chloride salt complexes produced loss of a single bpy ligand, chloride attachment, and losses of H. Spectra of [Ru(bpy(3)]X(2) where X = BF(4)(-), CF(3)SO(3)(-), and SCN(-) were also collected using LD and compared with the spectra for Cl(2) and PF(6) salts. Regardless of counterion, loss of H is observed in LD spectra. MALDI spectra of the trisbipyridyl complexes using 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB) and sinapinic acid (SA) as the matrix were also obtained. The spectra using SA as matrix show intact molecular ion peaks with very little fragmentation and no counterion attachment. Unlike SA, the spectra obtained using DHB look similar to LD spectra with significant losses of H. Our results are consistent with a reaction scheme for hydrogen loss from a carbon that also involves breaking of the metalz.sbnd;nitrogen bond, rotation of a pyridine ring, and re-formation of an ortho-metallated complex by a metalz.sbnd;C bond. These results demonstrate the importance of ion generation method and the utilization of FTMS for correct characterization of metal poly(pyridyl) complexes. 相似文献

We describe a technology for attaching libraries of synthetic compounds to coat proteins of bacteriophage particles such that the identity of the chemical structure is encoded in the genome of the phage, analogous to peptides displayed on phage surfaces by conventional phage-display techniques. This format allows a library of synthetic compounds to be screened very efficiently as a single pool. Encoded phage serve as extremely robust reporters of the presence of each compound, providing exquisite sensitivity for identification of active compounds engaged in complex biological processes such as receptor-mediated endocytosis and transcytosis. To evaluate this approach, we constructed a library of 980 analogs of folic acid displayed on T7 phage, and demonstrated rapid identification of compounds that bind to folate receptor and direct endocytosis of associated phage particles into cells that express the targeted receptor. 相似文献

A geometric $k$ -configuration is a collection of points and straight lines in the plane so that $k$ points lie on each line and $k$ lines pass through this point. We introduce a new construction method for constructing $k$ -configurations with non-trivial dihedral or chiral (i.e., purely rotational) symmetry, for any $k \ge 3$ ; the configurations produced have $2^{k-2}$ symmetry classes of points and lines. The construction method produces the only known infinite class of symmetric geometric 7-configurations, the second known infinite class of symmetric geometric 6-configurations, and the only known 6-configurations with chiral symmetry. 相似文献

Medical implants are prone to colonization by bacterial biofilms. Normally, surgery is required to replace the infected implant. One promising noninvasive modality is to destroy biofilms with high-intensity focused ultrasound. In our study, Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms were grown on implant-mimicking graphite disks in a flow chamber for 3 days prior to exposing them to ultrasound pulses. Exposure time at each treatment location was varied between 5, 15 and 30 s. Burst period was varied between 1, 3, 6 and 12 milliseconds (ms). The pulses were 20 cycles in duration at 1.1 MHz from a spherically focused transducer (f/1, 63 mm focal length), creating peak compressional and rarefactional pressures at the graphite disk surface of 30 and 13 MPa, respectively. P. aeruginosa were tagged with green fluorescent protein, and killed cells were visualized using propidium iodide before determining the extent of biofilm destruction. The exposure-induced temperature rise was measured to be less than 0.2 °C at the focus, namely the interface between graphite disk and water. Then, the temperature rise was measured at the focus between the graphite disk and a tissue-mimicking phantom to evaluate therapy safety. Two thresholds, of bacteria destruction increase and of complete bacteria removal, respectively, were identified to divide our eight exposure conditions. Results indicated that 30-s exposure and 6-ms pulse period were sufficient to destroy the biofilms. However, the 15-s exposure and 3-ms pulse period were viewed as optimum when considering exposure time, efficacy, and safety. 相似文献

Advanced carbon microelectrodes, including many carbon-nanotube (CNT)-based electrodes, are being developed for the in vivo detection of neurotransmitters such as dopamine (DA). Our prior simulations of DA and dopamine-o-quinone (DOQ) on pristine, flat graphene showed rapid surface diffusion for all adsorbed species, but it is not known how CNT surfaces affect dopamine adsorption and surface diffusivity. In this work, we use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the adsorbed structures and surface diffusion dynamics of DA and DOQ on CNTs of varying curvature and helicity. In addition, we study DA dynamics in a groove between two aligned CNTs to model the spatial constraints at the junctions within CNT assemblies. We find that the adsorbate diffusion on a solvated CNT surface depends upon curvature. However, this effect cannot be attributed to changes in the surface energy roughness because the lateral distributions of the molecular adsorbates are similar across curvatures, diffusivities on zigzag and armchair CNTs are indistinguishable, and the curvature dependence disappears in the absence of solvent. Instead, adsorbate diffusivities correlate with the vertical placement of the adsorbate’s moieties, its tilt angle, its orientation along the CNT axis, and the number of waters in its first hydration shell, all of which will influence its effective hydrodynamic radius. Finally, DA diffuses into and remains in the groove between a pair of aligned and solvated CNTs, enhancing diffusivity along the CNT axis. These first studies of surface diffusion on a CNT electrode surface are important for understanding the changes in diffusion dynamics of dopamine on nanostructured carbon electrode surfaces. 相似文献

We consider the resource-constrained scheduling problem when each job’s resource requirements remain constant over its processing time. We study a time-indexed formulation of the problem, providing facet-defining inequalities for a projection of the resulting polyhedron that exploit the resource limitations inherent in the problem. Lifting procedures are then provided for obtaining strong valid inequalities for the original polyhedron. Computational results are presented to demonstrate the strength of these inequalities. 相似文献
