Estimation of kinetics parameters for the adsorption of human serum albumin onto hydroxyapatite-modified silver electrodes by piezoelectric quartz crystal impedance analysis.

The adsorption of human serum albumin onto hydroxyapatite-modified silver electrodes has been in situ investigated by utilizing the piezoelectric quartz crystal impedance technique. The changes of equivalent circuit parameters were used to interpret the adsorption process. A kinetic model of two consecutive steps was derived to describe the process and compared with a first-order kinetic model by using residual analysis. The experimental data of frequency shift fitted to the model and kinetics parameters, k1, k2, psi1, psi2 and qr, were obtained. All fitted results were in reasonable agreement with the corresponding experimental results. Two adsorption constants (7.19 kJ mol(-1) and 22.89 kJ mol(-1)) were calculated according to the Arrhenius formula.

Seizure warning algorithm based on optimization and nonlinear dynamics

There is growing evidence that temporal lobe seizures are preceded by a preictal transition, characterized by a gradual dynamical change from asymptomatic interictal state to seizure. We herein report the first prospective analysis of the online automated algorithm for detecting the preictal transition in ongoing EEG signals. Such, the algorithm constitutes a seizure warning system. The algorithm estimates STL_max, a measure of the order or disorder of the signal, of EEG signals recorded from individual electrode sites. The optimization techniques were employed to select critical brain electrode sites that exhibit the preictal transition for the warning of epileptic seizures. Specifically, a quadratically constrained quadratic 0-1 programming problem is formulated to identify critical electrode sites. The automated seizure warning algorithm was tested in continuous, long-term EEG recordings obtained from 5 patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. For individual patient, we use the first half of seizures to train the parameter settings, which is evaluated by ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) curve analysis. With the best parameter setting, the algorithm applied to all cases predicted an average of 91.7% of seizures with an average false prediction rate of 0.196 per hour. We present some results on the impact of demand variability on stocking policies and incentives to forecast, in the context of single period inventory-based contracts in a manufacturer-retailer channel.     

A hierarchy of Sturm–Liouville problems

Sturm–Liouville equations will be considered where the boundary conditions depend rationally on the eigenvalue parameter. Such problems apply to a variety of engineering situations, for example to the stability of rotating axles. Classesof these problems will be isolated with a rather rich spectral structure, for example oscillation, comparison and completeness properties analogous to thoseof the ‘usual’ Sturm–Liouville problem which has constant boundary conditions.In fact it will be shown how these classes can be converted into each other, andinto the ‘usual’ Sturm–Liouville problem, by means of transformations preserving all but finitely many eigenvalues. Kähler-Einstein metrics with positive scalar curvature

In this paper, we prove that the existence of K?hler-Einstein metrics implies the stability of the underlying K?hler manifold in a suitable sense. In particular, this disproves a long-standing conjecture that a compact K?hler manifold admits K?hler-Einstein metrics if it has positive first Chern class and no nontrivial holomorphic vector fields. We will also establish an analytic criterion for the existence of K?hler-Einstein metrics. Our arguments also yield that the analytic criterion is satisfied on stable K?hler manifolds, provided that the partial C ⁰-estimate posed in [T6] is true. Oblatum 12-IV-1996 & 8-XI-1996
