Compulsorily Phase Locked Interferometer Using Orthogonally Polarized Light Source of a Modulated LD with High Extinction Ratio

This paper describes a compulsorily phase locked differential interferometer using an orthogonally polarized light source of a modulated LD with high extinction ratio to reduce non-linearity of the interferometer caused by polarization cross-talk. The current modulated LD is used as a light source to make the interferometer compact and for the scanning phase of the interferometer. The interferometer is operated compulsorily at the maximum inclination point of the fringe intensity curve by fringe scanning and an electric system. A Wollaston prism of high extinction ratio (50 dB) is used to combine the polarizing beams and to make the polarization cross-talk very small. In one light source the polarized output beams are on the same propagation axis; in the other they have a small crossing angle (2.5 mrad ∼ 10 mrad) to completely exclude non-linearity of the interferometer causded by polarization cross-talk. Using jets of a gas mixture of nitrogen and ethylene, this interferometer was demonstrated to be useful in detecting the photothermal effect of a photothermal velocimeter under phase fluctuation in a turbulent flow.     

High photosensitivity in cis-polyphenylacetylene films irradiated with 60Co γ-ray

This paper reports that ⁶⁰Co γ-ray irradiation can convert cis-polyphenylacetylene (cis-PPA) films prepared with rare-earth coordination catalysts to highly photosensitive materials. The dependence of the photosensitivity on irradiation dose, preparation methods, and microstructure of the PPA films has been investigated by means of a potential discharge technique. The photosensitivity was enhanced with increasing irradiation dose. The critical dose to produce a light response was 5 × 10³ Gy. The maximum surface potential discharge rate was 618 V/s, and the dark decay was approximately 2 V/s for cis-PPA films irradiated with ⁶⁰Co γ-ray (dose: 2 × 10⁵ Gy). The cis-transoidal-PPA and an electrophotographic photoreceptor device incorporating cis-PPA showed a higher irradiation effect. The structure and properties of ⁶⁰Co γ-ray irradiated rare-earth PPA films are similar to the unirradiated films.     

Pointwise Estimates for a Class of Oscillatory Integrals and Related Lp–Lq Estimates

In this article we establish pointwise estimates for a class of oscillatory integrals related to the fundamental solution of the dispersive equation ∂_t u − iP (D_x)u = 0, where P(D_x) is a differential operator whose symbol P(ξ) is a real polynomial in one variable. Then we use such pointwise estimates to establish L^p–L^q estimates for the solution of this equation.

Hamiltonian N2‐locally connected claw‐free graphs

A graph G is N₂‐locally connected if for every vertex ν in G, the edges not incident with ν but having at least one end adjacent to ν in G induce a connected graph. In 1990, Ryjá?ek conjectured that every 3‐connected N₂‐locally connected claw‐free graph is Hamiltonian. This conjecture is proved in this note. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Leptonic constant of the pseudoscalar <Emphasis Type="Italic">B</Emphasis><Subscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">c</Emphasis></Subscript> meson

We calculate the leptonic constant for the pseudoscalar ground state of the B _c meson in the framework of a QCD-motivated potential model taking into account the two-loop anomalous dimension for the heavy quark current in nonrelativistic QCD as matched with full QCD.

We define analytic functions within Clifford Algebras CL, and study their trigonometric properties. We write the addition formulas when their arguments, A and B in CL, commute, this generalizes ordinary trigonometry. We examine in particular the case A² = 1.      

Isometric Isomorphisms Between Banach Algebras Related to a Certain Class of Clifford Topological Semigroups

In the present paper it is shown that if S₁ and S₂ are two Clifford topological semigroups satisfying certain conditions and T is an isometric isomorphism of LUC(S₁*) onto LUC(S₂*), then T maps S₁ topologically isomorphically onto S₂. Furthermore, T maps M ^l _n(S₁) (M(S₁), respectively) isometrically isomorphically onto M ^l _n(S₂) (M(S₂), respectively). Indeed, we have obtained a generalization of a well-known result of Ghahramani, Lau and Losert for locally compact groups to a more general setting of Clifford topological semigroups.     

Effect of induced shielding current transmission in longitudinal direction on levitation force of melt grown single-domain YBa_2Cu_3O_(7-x) cylindrical superconductor

YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) bulk is one of the most important high temperature superconducting materials for magnetic levitation applications, because it has a high magnetic irreversibility field Hirr at liquid nitrogen temperature, and can grow into large grains. The levitation force of YBCO bulk is proportional to the critical current density (Jc) and grain radius (r)[1], so higher Jc and r are appreciated for YBCO bulks to achieve higher levitation force. Experiences in Expert Systems

This paper describes some work carried out in the Scientific Research and Development Branch (SRDB) of the Home Office, intended to contribute to an overall aim of building up internal expertise in the field of expert systems. This was done by carrying out a number of pilot and demonstrator projects, two of which are described in some detail. The plan, which proved successful, was to build as far as possible on the relevant skills already possessed by an OR group in the branch. The lessons learned from these are summarized in the hope that they will be of use to other groups who wish to become involved in this important area.
