Magneto-optic phenomena in metastable Fe-Cu solid solutions

It has been observed by the transverse Kerr effect that the hysteresis loop changes its sense and its amplitude due to the composition gradient introduced in the metastable Fe-Cu solid solution, which has been produced by quenching from the vapour phase. The phenomenon was interpreted in terms of skin depth effect which plays an important role due to the significantly lowered density of such films relative to the bulk value.The calculated values of skin depth effect were found to be in fairly good agreement with experimentally obtained thicknesses of iron and copper films, respectively. Metastable Fe-Cu solid solution films appeared to have a quasi-sandwich structure due to the presence of very strong composition gradient within the relatively short thickness range.     

Some properties of ionization waves of varietyR in a neon glow discharge

The parameters of ther-ionization waves in a neon discharge were measured at two neutral gas temperatures (298°K and 77°K). The experimental results of the measurements of the artificially excitedr-ionization waves over the region of the homogeneous positive column in discharge tubes with different radius (from 0·5 cm to 1·2 cm) are reported. The results are arranged as simple functions of pressure, electric field and discharge tube radius. The product of the wave-length and the electric field and the ratio of the group and phase velocities are independent of the temperature. The temperature changes of the dependences of the frequency and phase and group velocities are connected with the temperature changes of the atomic ion life-time in neon discharge. The validity of the dependences for wave parameters is confined to the artificially excited waves in a homogeneous positive column.Authors express their gratitude to M. Novák, L. Láska, K. A finite element procedure of the second order of accuracy

A finite element procedure of the second order of accuracy for solving second order boundary value problems is presented and justified and numerical results are given.     

Microwave heating of electrons of a dense plasma column at frequencies higher than electron cyclotron frequency

In this experimental study the absorption of plasma waves, excited in a dense plasma column, was investigated and the localization of the regions of efficient heating of electrons were determined in a broad range of parameters: 1>_ce/>0·1, 0·3<n/n _UH <25, 10^–5<v/< <10^–3. The heating of electrons near the second electron cyclotron harmonic was investigated in greater detail.We are grateful to the members of the Staff of the Institute of Plasma Physics Drs. Analysis of Weinberg's algebraic relations

Implications of Weinberg's algebraic relations when only p-wave pions are taken into account are investigated. It is shown that decay rates and mass spectra of hadrons assigned to certain classes of unitary irreducible representations of theSU(4) group are in a strong disagreement with experimental data.     

On the role of the image potential in electron surface studies

Exchange and correlation contributions to the vacuum part of the effective electron potential of a semiinfinite crystal are modelled by a simple shifted image potential. Modifications, introduced by this potential, are studied for the cases of electron surface states and of the diffraction of low-energy electrons on a simple one-dimensional model.
