In the summer of 1916, Finnish physicist Gunnar Nordström (1881–1923) arrived in Leiden to carry out research with Paul Ehrenfest (1880–1933), Hendrik A. Lorentzs successor in the chair of theoretical physics. Nordström had recently published the first five-dimensional unified model of the universe, a theory that went virtually unnoticed by the physics community. Ehrenfests personal journals reveal that Nordströms visit coincided with a flowering of Ehrenfests own interest in dimensionality, which resulted in his well-known paper on the connection between the fundamental laws of physics and the three-dimensionality of space. I examine Nordströms and Ehrenfests collaboration and explore the relationship between their ideas and the Kaluza-Klein model of five-dimensional unification.Paul Halpern is Professor of Physics at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. The electro-optic (E-O) properties of the slab polymer waveguide induced by electric poling have been studied experimentally. The thin film waveguide was prepared by a synthesized polymer polypelargonamide and poled by applying voltage between the electrodes. I–V curves and E-O characteristics of the polymer films were in-situ measured during poling. In order to evaluate the molecular dipole orientation under the poling field, the absorption spectra of this film was observed by FTIR. The E-O performance of the polymer slab film was also estimated by the Mach–Zehnder interferometer. 相似文献

Visible and NIR luminescence of nanocrystalline β-Ga2O3:Er prepared by solution combustion synthesis
In this paper we report on facile solution combustion synthesis of erbium doped β-Ga2O3 with urea as fuel. The product was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). X-ray diffraction and TEM showed that the material is nanostructured. Luminescence properties of β-Ga2O3:Er are studied with excitation in near infrared (Nd:YAG laser at 1064 nm) and visible (argon laser at 514.5 nm). A strong NIR emission of Er3+ in the window of minimal optical loss in silica based optical fibers, due to the 4I13/2→4I15/2 transition at 1.55 μm has been observed. Codoping with Yb3+ significantly increases the intensity of that important emission. 相似文献

Study of Langmuir monolayers consisting of stearic acid (SA) and dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) molecules was done by surface pressure-area isotherms (π-A), the Maxwell displacement current (MDC) measurement, X-ray reflectivity (XRR) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to investigate the selected mechanic, thermodynamic and dielectric properties based on orientational structure of monolayers. On the base of π-A isotherms analysis we explain the creation of stable structures and found optimal monolayer composition. The dielectric properties represented by MDC generated monolayers were analyzed in terms of excess dipole moment, proposing the effect of dipole-dipole interaction. We study the spatial dynamics of spiral waves in noisy Hodgkin-Huxley neuronal ensembles evoked by different information transmission delays and network topologies. In classical settings of coherence resonance the intensity of noise is fine-tuned so as to optimize the system's response. Here, we keep the noise intensity constant, and instead, vary the length of information transmission delay amongst coupled neurons. We show that there exists an intermediate transmission delay by which the spiral waves are optimally ordered, hence indicating the existence of delay-enhanced coherence of spatial dynamics in the examined system. Additionally, we examine the robustness of this phenomenon as the diffusive interaction topology changes towards the small-world type, and discover that shortcut links amongst distant neurons hinder the emergence of coherent spiral waves irrespective of transmission delay length. Presented results thus provide insights that could facilitate the understanding of information transmission delay on realistic neuronal networks. 相似文献

An instantaneous time series distance is defined through the equal time correlation coefficient. The idea is applied to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) yearly increments of 21 rich countries between 1950 and 2005 in order to test the process of economic globalisation. Some data discussion is first presented to decide what (EKS, GK, or derived) GDP series should be studied. Distances are then calculated from the correlation coefficient values between pairs of series. The role of time averaging of the distances over finite size windows is discussed. Three network structures are next constructed based on the hierarchy of distances. It is shown that the mean distance between the most developed countries on several networks actually decreases in time, —which we consider as a proof of globalization. An empirical law is found for the evolution after 1990, similar to that found in flux creep. The optimal observation time window size is found ?15 years. 相似文献

Au/GaN/n-GaAs structure has been fabricated by the electrochemically anodic nitridation method for providing an evidence of achievement of stable electronic passivation of n-doped GaAs surface. The change of the electronic properties of the GaAs surface induced by the nitridation process has been studied by means of current-voltage (I-V) characterizations on Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs) shaped on gallium nitride/gallium arsenide structure. Au/GaN/n-GaAs Schottky diode that showed rectifying behavior with an ideality factor value of 2.06 and barrier height value of 0.73 eV obeys a metal-interfacial layer-semiconductor (MIS) configuration rather than an ideal Schottky diode due to the existence of GaN at the Au/GaAs interfacial layer. The formation of the GaN interfacial layer for the stable passivation of gallium arsenide surface is investigated through calculation of the interface state density Nss with and without taking into account the series resistance Rs. While the interface state density calculated without taking into account Rs has increased exponentially with bias from 2.2×1012 cm−2 eV−1 in (Ec−0.48) eV to 3.85×1012 cm−2 eV−1 in (Ec−0.32) eV of n-GaAs, the Nss obtained taking into account the series resistance has remained constant with a value of 2.2×1012 cm−2 eV−1 in the same interval. This has been attributed to the passivation of the n-doped GaAs surface with the formation of the GaN interfacial layer. 相似文献
