Solid-phase approach towards the synthesis of functionalized imidazo[1,2-b]pyrazol-2-ones

The solid-phase synthesis of a series of imidazo[1,2-b]pyrazol-2-ones, an interesting 5,5-fused ring system, based on diverse set of hydrazine acids and malanonitriles is described. The method involves formation of 5-aminopyrazoles on solid support and subsequent cyclizative cleavage off the resin. Compounds were obtained in acceptable to excellent yields and are suitable for biological evaluation without further purification.     

Synthesis of BEDT-TTF derivatives with carboxylic ester and amide functionalities

Synthetic routes to BEDT-TTF derivatives bearing side chain carboxylic ester and amide groups are reported. Methyl ET-ethanoate was prepared in five steps from vinylacetic acid; amide groups were installed early in the synthesis by mixed anhydride methods before the final coupling reaction.     

Photochemistry of trifluromethyl substituted 1‐methylpyrazoles

Trifluromethyl substitution on the pyrazole ring was found to enhance photoreactivity via the P₄ pathway which involves interchange of the N2‐C3 ring atoms. Thus, 1‐methyl‐3‐(trifluromethyl)pyrazole (1) and 1‐methyl‐5‐(trifluromethyl)pyrazole (3) transposed with a P₄/P₆ or P₄/P₆+P₇ ratio of 2.1:1. 1‐methyl‐4‐(trifluromethyl)pyrazole (2) transposed regiospecifically by the P₄ transposition pathway. Compounds 2 and 3 were also observed to undergo photocleavage to yield enaminonitrile and enaminoisocyanide products.     

Low Cost, High Efficiency, Gain Flattened L Band EDFA Using FBGs as C Band Seed Generators

A low cost, coolerless 980nm diode pumped, gain flattened L band EDFA with fast transient control, high pump efficiency and gain clamping effect was realized by using FBGs as C band seed generators.     

Application of polymer-supported triphenyl phosphine in the palladium-catalyzed cyanation reaction under microwave conditions

A variety of aryl nitriles were prepared in excellent yields from the palladium acetate catalyzed coupling of aryl halides with Zn(CN)₂ using polymer-supported triphenyl phosphine as the ligand and dimethylformamide as solvent under microwave irradiation conditions.     

Bringing the balance function into focus

Charge balance functions provide important insight concerning hadronization and charge transport in heavy ion collisions at RHIC. Unfortunately, this observable is clouded by several effects. One of these effects is resonance production. Here, we present a simple thermal model where resonance production is included via a Monte Carlo technique based on the canonical ensemble. Resonance production is not found to have a large effect on the width.     

Segmental and secondary dynamics in hydrogen‐bonded poly(4‐vinylphenol)/poly(methyl methacrylate) blends

Broadband dielectric spectroscopy was used to study the segmental (α) and secondary (β) relaxations in hydrogen‐bonded poly(4‐vinylphenol)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PVPh/PMMA) blends with PVPh concentrations of 20–80% and at temperatures from ?30 to approximately glass‐transition temperature (T_g) + 80 °C. Miscible blends were obtained by solution casting from methyl ethyl ketone solution, as confirmed by single differential scanning calorimetry T_g and single segmental relaxation process for each blend. The β relaxation of PMMA maintains similar characteristics in blends with PVPh, compared with neat PMMA. Its relaxation time and activation energy are nearly the same in all blends. Furthermore, the dielectric relaxation strength of PMMA β process in the blends is proportional to the concentration of PMMA, suggesting that blending and intermolecular hydrogen bonding do not modify the local intramolecular motion. The α process, however, represents the segmental motions of both components and becomes slower with increasing PVPh concentration because of the higher T_g. This leads to well‐defined α and β relaxations in the blends above the corresponding T_g, which cannot be reliably resolved in neat PMMA without ambiguous curve deconvolution. The PMMA β process still follows an Arrhenius temperature dependence above T_g, but with an activation energy larger than that observed below T_g because of increased relaxation amplitude. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. John Hawkes (1944-2001)

In his curriculum vitae, John Hawkes lists his research interestsas geometric measure theory, probability (Lévy processes),and potential theory (probabilistic). In fact, he made significantcontributions to all three areas, and there are strong relationshipsbetween them. He used both geometric measure theory and potentialtheory as tools for his study of the trajectories of particularLévy processes, but in many cases he needed to developthe tool before it was ready to be used. We will summarise hisresearch later, but first we discuss what is known of his lifehistory.
