N2-broadening coefficients in the ν3 band of CS2 at room and low temperatures

Using a tunable diode-laser spectrometer, N₂-broadening coefficients have been measured for 15 lines in the ν₃ band of C³²S₂ at room and low temperatures (298, 273.2, 248.2, 223.2, and 198.2 K). These lines with J values ranging from 2 to 62 are located in the spectral range 1519-1545 cm⁻¹. The collisional widths are obtained by fitting each measured spectral line with a Voigt and a Rautian lineshape model and for a few lines we also used a Galatry model. From these results, we have determined the n parameter of the temperature dependence of each broadening coefficient. A semiclassical calculation of these broadenings has been performed by considering in addition to the main electrostatic quadrupole-quadrupole interaction an anisotropic dispersion contribution leading to satisfactory results at all temperatures and providing the n temperature dependence parameter in good agreement with the experimental determination.     

Discotic liquid crystals of transition metal complexes X. Phthalocyanine derivatives substituted with n-alkyloxyphenyl side chains

Octakis(alkyloxyphenyl)-phthalocyanine derivatives ((C_nOph)₈PcH₂ n = 8, 10 12 and 18), their corresponding copper (II) complexes ((C_nOph)₈PcCu, n = 10, 12 and 18) and octakis(2-ethylhexyl)-PcH₂ have been synthesized and their mesomorphic properties characterized. (C_nOph)₈PcH₂, (n = 12 and 18) exhibit hexagona disordered columnar mesophases whereas (C_nOph)₈PcCu (n = 12 and 18) yields a rectangular disordered columnar liquid crystal. An alkylphenyl-oxymethyl derivative, (C₁₂phOCH₂)₈PcH₂, was synthesized to determine the influence of the connecting link between the side chains and the phthalocyanine macrocycle on the mesomorphic properties.     

New approaches to bicyclic vinyl heterocycles from propargylic acetals

The paper describes further studies on the intramolecular carbolithiation of propargylic acetals with aryllithiums leading to 2-vinylbenzofurans and 3-vinylfuropyridines. Attempts to extend the cascade to [4.4.0] binuclear heterocycles met with limited success. An alternative, two-step entry to such ring systems has been developed using the palladium-induced cyclization/hydride capture methodology. A new route to isoquinilinones from simple benzamides is also disclosed.     

Efficient N-p-methoxyphenyl amine deprotection through anodic oxidation

[reaction: see text] A new method of deprotection of N-p-methoxyphenylamines using anodic oxidation in acidic medium is presented. The process furnishes a high yield of amine and is compatible with several oxidable functional groups.     

Controlled synthesis of cis or trans isomers of 1,3-disubstituted tetrahydroisoquinolines and 2,5-disubstituted pyrrolidines

[reactions: see text] The stereoselective outcome of Pd(II)- or Ag(I)-catalyzed intramolecular N-alkylation to afford 1,3-disubstituted 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines was examined. In the absence of additional substituents, Pd(II) allows a facile access to the cis isomers, while Ag(I) favors formation of the trans isomers. The same observation was made for the synthesis of 2,5-disubstituted pyrrolidines. Possible reasons for the observed stereoselectivities are discussed.
