Optical absorption in vitreous GeSb2Se4

Optical absorption of vitreous GeSb₂Se₄ was studied in spectral region 0.7–25 μm. At low absorption levels near the edge the absorption coefficient K depends exponentially on energy. At high absorption levels the quadratical energy dependence of K is observed. In the present work we determined the optical energy gap E^opt_g = 1.29 eV and discussed the temperature dependence of the absorption coefficient. Measured reflectivity curves were used to estimate the value of the refractive index of GeSb₂Se₄ ($\text{n = 3.13–3.56}\text{at}\text{h}\text{?}\text{ω = 1.00–1.70}\text{eV}$). Vitreous GeSb₂Se₄ is also transparent in the spectral interval 2–15.7 μm.     

Alkene insertion reactivity of a o-carboranyl-substituted 9-borafluorene

The synthesis of 9-borafluorene with an electron-withdrawing o-carboranyl substituent and its reactions with a series of alkenes are described. The o-carboranyl substituent is bonded via one of the cluster carbon atoms to the boron atom of the 9-borafluorene moiety. In all cases, the reactions afford partly saturated analogs of borepins (i.e. 6,7-dihydroborepins) by unprecedented alkene insertion into the endocyclic B–C bond of the borole ring. Comparative studies with 9-bromo-9-borafluorene illustrate the superior insertion reactivity of the carboranyl-substituted derivative. A suite of experimental and computational techniques disclose the unique properties of the 9-borafluorene and provide insight into how the 9-carboranyl substituent affects its chemical reactivity.

A 9-carboranyl-substituted 9-borafluorene is reported, which is capable of undergoing efficient ring expansion to 6,7-dihydroborepins by a previously unknown alkene insertion.     

Preparation of HgJ2 single crystals and the effect of doping upon their physical properties

HgJ₂ single crystals both pure and doped were grown from an acetone solution using the method of the slow solvent evaporation. The iodides NaJ, KJ, SrJ₂, CdJ₂, NH₄J were used as doping materials in concentrations from 0.01 to 2.0 wt%. The grown crystals were studied with respect to the influence of impurity doping on the electric conductivity and the phase transitions at atmospheric pressure (the DTA method) and high pressure as well (with the help of the high pressure optical cell).     

Rapid determination of 90Sr in urine samples using AnaLig® Sr-01

This paper describes the use of IBC’s AnaLig^® Sr-01 molecular recognition technology product to effectively and selectively pre-concentrate, separate, and recover strontium from urine samples. This method uses two-stage columns separation consisting of two different commercial products Eichrom’s Pre-filter Material and AnaLig^® Sr-01 column from IBC Advanced Technologies. This method does not involve co-precipitation of strontium as phosphates and oxalates from urine samples. The new rapid method separates strontium-90 with high chemical recovery.     

Dislocation driven chromium precipitation in Fe-9Cr binary alloy: a positron lifetime study

The influence of initial heat treatment on anomalous Cr precipitation within high temperature solubility region of the Fe–9Cr alloy has been investigated using positron lifetime studies. Air-quenched samples with pre-existing dislocations exhibited a distinct annealing stage in positron lifetime between 800 and 1100?K corresponding to Cr-precipitation. During this stage, Transmission Electron Microscopy showed fine precipitates of average size 4 nm, dispersed throughout the sample and from Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis they are found to be Cr-enriched. The presence of dislocations is found to be responsible for Cr precipitation.     

Synthesis and properties of new biotin compounds containing hexyltriethylene glycol chain

The synthesis of a new halogenide containing hexyltriethylene glycol chain functionalized with biotin is reported. The general possibility of this linker to use as the building block for biotinylated compounds syntheses is demonstrated. Two biotinylated esters with different properties for useful surface modification and as fluorescence probes for proteins marking were synthesized. The properties of mentioned compounds were investigated by using surface plazmon resonance ellypsometry and fluorescence spectroscopy.     

Detection and characterization of structural changes in the hard-disk fluid under freezing and melting conditions

The fluid of two-dimensional hard disks is investigated over a range of densities by Monte Carlo simulations in order to detect and characterize structural changes which take place when the condition of freezing and melting is approached. A novel method is proposed based on the use of the Voronoi tessellation and a certain shape factor which turns out to be a clear indicator of the presence of different underlying substructures (domains). Close to the freezing condition the probability distribution of the shape factor develops a second distinct maximum corresponding to a predominant presence of near-regular hexagons, whereas the original peak, having its origin primarily in pentagons and distorted hexagons, diminishes and disappears at melting density.     

The129I hyperfine interaction in fatty acids studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy

Oleic acid substituted by iodine and saponified by Ca²⁺ cations has been studied by¹²⁹I Mössbauer spectroscopy. The quadrupole coupling constants and isomer shifts, determined from the γ-resonance spectra recorded at 4.2 K, have been described by 5p and 5s orbital populations of iodine. It was also found that saponification of the fatty acid has no significant influence on the measured iodine bonds. However, the increased order of fatty acids in soap form is reflected by narrowing of the resonant linewidth due to the reduction of the electric field gradient distribution.
