Miscibility in systems containing aqueous solutions of various alkylbenzenesulfonates, toluene and, n-butanol

Miscibility relationships in four-component systems containing sodium alkylbenzenesulfonates, toluene, n-butanol, and water were studied at 25°C in the hope of clarifying the complex systems used in the “micellar flood” enhanced oil recovery process. Phase boundary curves for the pseudo three-component systems (constant sulfonate/water ratios, 2.5 moles sulfonate per kg water) were determined. The sulfonates included those of benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene, isopropylbenzene, mesitylene, cymene, methyl-t-butylbenzene, and diisopropylbenzene, in all of which the alkyl substituents are smaller than in the usual surfactants. The phase boundary curves have similar and fairly symmetrical shapes. The amount of n-butanol (cosolvent) required to produce miscibility decreases with increasing number of alkyl carbons on the benzene ring of the sulfonates and seems relatively independent of the isomeric structure. The sodium salt of diisopropylbenzenesulfonate gives the lowest phase boundary curve (least n-butanol required for miscibility) among the nine sulfonates studied.     

Asymmetric Diels-Alder reactions with 5-menthyloxy-2-(5H)-furanone

A new class of chiral dienophiles, 5-alkoxy-2(5H)-furanones, has been developed. Both enantiomers of 5-menthyloxy-2(5H)-ftiranone are readily available in enantiomerically pure form, starting from furfural and d- or l-menthol. Excellent diastereoselectivities (d.e. β99%) are obtained in thermal Diels-Alder reactions with several cyclic and acyclic dienes. The use of silyl dienol ethers has resulted in new routes to enantiomerically pure cyclohexanones in a highly regioselective manner.     

Copolymerization reactivities and conductivities of some living polymers of p-substituted styrenes

A kinetic study in tetrahydrofuran of the addition of 1,1-diphenylethylene on para-substituted styrylcarbanions (with Cs⁺ as counterion) has given the reactivities of free ions and ion-pairs. For both species, the addition rate constant increased in the following sequence for the substituent of the phenyl ring: pH < p-CH₃ <p-CH₃O. It was also shown that in the same solvent, the dissociation constants of the polystyryl ion-pairs decreased with the electron-donating power of the substituent.     

Etude de la reactivite des coumarines—I : Regioselectivete des reactifs de grignard engages avec la coumarine

The various products obtained by the action of organomagnesium, compounds on coumarin result from 1.2-1.2 di-addition (phenolic alcohols) or 1.2–1.4 di-addition (ketophenols) or 1.4 mono-addition (dihydrobenzopyrones). The results show the importance of the nature of the halogen component of the Grignard reagent. A theoretical model allows regioselectivity of coumarine in relation to the group R and the halogene X to be evaluated.     

Magydardiendiol,diterpenoid with a new skeleton from magydaris panacifolia (umbelliferae).

Three new diterpenoids with a substituted α-cyclogeraniol skeleton have been isolated from the umbelliferae $\text{Magydaris panacifolia}$ (Vahl) Lange, for which the names of magydar-2,13-dien-11,17-diol, $\text{1}$, magydar-2,10 (20), 13-trien-17-ol, $\text{2}$, and magydar-2,10(20), 13-trien-17-yl acetate, $\text{3}$, are proposed. The structures of these substances have been deduced from spectroscopic and chemical data.     

Efficient synthesis of an imidazole-substituted delta-amino acid by the integration of chiral technologies

Two methods to produce (2S)-5-amino-2-(1-n-propyl-1H-imidazol-4-ylmethyl)-pentanoic acid were investigated. Diastereoisomeric salt resolution, using the quinidine salt, gave the desired intermediate in 98% ee and 33% yield. Asymmetric hydrogenation of various substrates gave high conversions, with up to 83% ee. Integration of these two approaches via asymmetric hydrogenation of a quinidine salt substrate followed by crystallization provided the desired intermediate in 94% ee and 76% yield.
