Relative line intensities in the argon L x-ray emission spectra produced by 0.3 to 3 keV electron impact

This note presents the first measurement of the relative intensities of the radiative processes of the L shell of argon. The partial emission cross sections are deduced. Our data show that the radiative transitions within the excited ion are very sensitive to the incident electron energy.     

Lifetimes of high-spin yrast states in 154Er

Lifetimes for high-spin levels (between about 10 and 30 ?) in ¹⁵⁴Er have been measured by the recoil-distance method. Non-collective, moderately collective and collective E2 transitions from states with lifetimes between at most 10 and 400 ps have been found. All available data on this nucleus are discussed within the framework of the oblate coupling scheme with the addition of collective degrees of freedom.     

Interaction of domain walls in thin magnetic films

Interactions of pairs of parallel Néel walls are investigated by means of Ritz's method calculations. In the case of the symmetric, thin-film mode of Néel walls, unwinding walls show an attractive and winding walls a repulsive interaction for all distances. The functional dependence of the interaction on the distance of the walls is strongly correlated with the wall profiles of the isolated walls with their characteristic extended tails. For the asymmetric Néel wall mode which occurs in thicker films, an additional repulsive interaction of the magnetization vortices in the wall core is found. This leads for unwinding walls to stable configurations of double walls with separations between two and three times the film thickness.

The experimental gas-phase structures of 1,3,5-trisilylbenzene and hexasilylbenzene and the theoretical structures of all benzenes with three or more silyl substituents

The structures of 1,3,5-trisilylbenzene and hexasilylbenzene in the gas phase have been determined by electron diffraction, and that of 1,3,5-trisilylbenzene by X-ray crystallography. The structures of three trisilylbenzene isomers, three tetrasilylbenzenes, pentasilylbenzene and hexasilylbenzene have been computed, ab initio and using Density Functional Theory, at levels up to MP2/6-31G*. The primary effect of silyl substituents is to narrow the ring angle at the substituted carbon atoms. Steric interactions between silyl groups on neighbouring carbon atoms lead first to displacement of these groups away from one another, and then to displacement out of the ring plane, with alternate groups moving to opposite sides of the ring. In the extreme example, hexasilylbenzene, the SiCCSi dihedral angle is 17.8(8) degrees .
