Analytical solutions of accreting black holes immersed in a ΛCDM model

The evolution of the mass of a black hole embedded in a universe filled with dark energy and cold dark matter is calculated in a closed form within a test fluid model in a Schwarzschild metric, taking into account the cosmological evolution of both fluids. The result describes exactly how accretion asymptotically switches from the matter-dominated to the Λ-dominated regime. For early epochs, the black hole mass increases due to dark matter accretion, and on later epochs the increase in mass stops as dark energy accretion takes over. Thus, the unphysical behaviour of previous analyses is improved in this simple exact model.     

Influence of the Outer Electrode Material on Ozone Generation in Corona Discharges

The effect of the outer electrode material on negative corona discharge current and the process of ozone formation have been studied in coaxial cylindrical system of electrodes fed by dry oxygen. Three materials (brass, duralumin, stainless steel) were tested in experiments. The probability coefficient of ozone decomposition was found be slightly higher compared with known data. The coefficient of probability of ozone decomposition is decreasing with the time of exposition of the metal surface to mixture of oxygen and ozone. The effect of the electrode material on the current voltage characteristic of the discharge was marginal. In contrast to this at average energy density η higher than 10 J/cm³ the ozone concentration is affected by material of the outer electrode. A strong influence of the temperature of metal electrode on the probability coefficient of ozone decomposition was illustrated from the decrease of the ozone production.

Prediction of Migration Times of Organic Ions in Capillary Zone Electrophoresis

The electrophoretic mobility ratio (R value) of any two ions is constant and independent of the capillary type and electrophoretic conditions if their electrical charges and hydration radii are constant. The use of strong acid salts and quaternary ammonium salts is therefore proposed for the determination of R values. Such analytes are called markers. The following determinations can be carried out: (i) the determination of the migration time corresponding to the electroosmotic flow (EOF) in any capillary under any electrophoretic condition by measuring the migration times of two markers in the condition studied (useful when the EOF is weak); (ii) the determination of the migration time of an analyte in any capillary by knowing the migration time of the markers in the capillary studied. If the pH is changed and the ionization of the analyte is pH dependent, the resulting migration time for the analyte can be calculated. The constancy of the mobility ratios of seven markers was checked experimentally at eight different pH values (between pH 3 and 10), at three temperatures, and for two buffer concentrations. The predicted and experimental migration times were also compared in two different types of capillaries.     

Laser performance of Yb:GdCa<Subscript>4</Subscript>O(BO<Subscript>3</Subscript>)<Subscript>3</Subscript> compared to Yb:KGd(WO<Subscript>4</Subscript>)<Subscript>2</Subscript> under diode-bar pumping

A study of Yb:GdCOB under diode-bar pumping has been performed and the results are compared, experimentally and theoretically, with Yb:KGW in the same cavity. An output power of 7.3 W and a slope efficiency of 57.4% were obtained. Self-frequency-doubling experiments are also discussed.     

Asymptotics for Global Measures of Accuracy of Splines

We obtain central limit theorems for the stochastic parts of L_p-norms of smoothed cubic spline estimators. The proofs are based on the observation that the variance term of the cubic spline is approximately of a form corresponding to a kernel estimator.     

Multimode reverse-symmetry waveguide sensor for broad-range refractometry

A sensor design that uses a grating-coupled multimode planar optical waveguide for absolute detection of the refractive indices of liquids or gases is presented. The waveguide consists of a simple 50-microm-thick, free-standing glass plate with air beneath it and the sample to be analyzed on top of it. This design offers a simple alternative to the well-known monomode waveguides, and, owing to its so-called reverse-symmetry configuration, a large detection range can be obtained.
